sobo's death to BP meds journey

Hope things are going better! Congrats on the Ziac! Sounds like you have some good "Plan B" options just in case

Thanks sparrow...

Have been out of town for most of the last 2 weeks. Ran a bit in MN and my achilles acted up... then I ran just a tiny bit in Seatle. I ran 2 miles on a tread mill on Monday, and 3 miles with intervals on tues. Wed & Thurs & friday nothing... traveled through the nite... on fri... was exhausted all day sat...

So I ran a total of 12 miles in the two weeks before the 1/2 marathon and to top it off... my luggage didn't arrive home when I did... My running shoes were in there... So no 1/2 marathon for me... BUT wait... my in-laws were at the airport returning from a trip and stopped by my airline to see if my bags had come in. They just did... so I got my shoes 6:00 PM sat... if they hadn't picked them up they would have been delivered the next day...

So I know I shouldn't run the 1/2 marathon and go to sleep thinking I will just go and set up the mile markers for the race (got drafted to do that from my running club)... I dream of running the race all nite. I wake up and scramble to find all my cold weather gear and head off to the race. I figure I'll just run slow and if my achiles acts up I can bow out at the 6 mile mark (double loop course)...

I start the race and run 11:15, 10:25, 10:45... and everything is feeling ok... then 10:40 and I feel a twinge in the Achilles... 9:30... it feels better when I run faster... now I quit looking at my watch and I am just running thinking I am going to call it quits in a mile... but I decided I was going to make it... I started running intervals... running fast was making the tendon not hurt and when I ran slow it would come back... come mile 10 my achilles... um didn't notice them... my right heel was hurting... my quads... my hips... my hamstrings... were all on fire... everything hurt...

My muscles were just rubber... I was truly willing myself to move... with 2 to go I was completely spent... mile 11 was the hardest... mile twelve hurt more but I was only 20 minutes away... I got passed by a couple of ladies leasurly jogging and chatting... and I was grunting in pain and running as fast as my legs would possibly move... I wasn't winded at all and was moving at a slug's pace but it was way harder than running at aerobic threshold...

I crossed the finish line... and wanted to just find a place to go cry. I made it... I endured rediculas pain and made it to the finish line...

I walked for 5-10 minutes... and walking was even painful. I realized the outside of my right foot was hurting and felt bruised... then I went and ate some food... and went home...

I am glad I ran the 1/2... the 15k was easy BUT it was easy because I trained well for it and didn't have any injuries leading up to it. the 1/2 was grueling because I didn't train for it and had two injuries... I need to rest my legs a bit... perhaps do some strength training and then ease back into running... an learn to run slow. I am going to try to do the same 1/2 marathon in the spring... (they run it 2x a year... spring and fall classic)... I need to be able to run the 1/2 marathon and not struggle for 7 miles...

I checked last night and as I suspected I finished last in my age group.... BUT I didn't set out to race... I set out to finish... and I did... and today I am paying for it. Every muscle from my navel down hurts...

I know I am not ready to train for a marathon...

I am doing this to get in shape not kill myself... so I enjoyed the 15k... I will see if I can run a 1/2 with the same level of enjoyment... I know I don't want to do what I did yesterday again.

Time to get back on track

Ok... So it has been over a week now since I ran the 1/2 marathon... and I am ready to get back to running. I am a bit nevous about it... I am worried that I will be injured... I am positive I will have lost quite a bit of what I built up as it has basically been a month of almost no running...

Ok tomorrow I run two miles very easy. I'll see how my legs feel. If everything is healed up...

I'm Back

Ok... Everything hurt when I started running again after that 1/2 marathon (nov 19th)... I did 2 miles on my street and my foot hurt... ... I did approx 3 miles at the gym on the silly 10 laps to a mile track... and my left hamstring hurt... I ran with the wackos (running group) and my left hip hurt...

I ran yesterday with the Wackos and the hip barely bothered me and the hamstring was just a bit tight... ??? my legs still feel pretty dead... ??? OK BUT you can't feed your body nothing but Beer, Booze, and bad food then go out and run and expect your body to say

"What a nice day for a run"

instead it says...

"whohoo... this is fun... um... ok I'm done now (1 mile in)... get me a beer..."

The year is ending and I need to get back in the swing... I ran yesterday and I will run again tomorrow... Sat I would like to run and then I will run again on the 26th & the 27th & 28th... then the 31st... skipping the 1st...

So for the rest of the year here is the plan

21 - x miles (don't know see when I get there... probably 5-6)
23 - 3 easy
26 - 4 easy
27 - 3-4 easy
28 - 4-6 easy
31 - 3 easy

If I can come through that without pain or injury I will be back in the swing... and I'll start adding in some tempo work...

I ran 3 yesterday in 29:42 and was working... I'll hit the scale tomorrow and figure out how much damage I have done... I figure I put on 5 at least...

I would figure 188-189... oh well... what is done is done...

I have my new years resolution... I am only going to drink alcohol on Friday... and then I'll let myself have 1 of the beers I brewed and perhaps 1 other drink ... the rest of the time no alcohol...

I am going to break 2 hours in the spring classic 1/2 marathon in the spring...

one final note... I need to go get new shoes...

I'm Back

The whole drinking only on fridays thing didn't go as planned... anyways on 2/3/2007 I decided to not drink at all. I have been alcohol free since then. Today is the first time in a long time I actually ran 2 days in a row..

Only 2 miles each day but yesterday I cranked out 2 miles in 14:28 which is super fast for me... today I was a bit slower... just under a 9:00 mile pace... but I was trying to take it easy...

I ended up not running the spring 1/2 marathon but I did work the race... I will start running for fun now for the next couple weeks and see how that goes... at the end of april I'll see how my body feels and pick a race to run. I noticed a 20k in the fall that is a trail race that looks really cool... but I figure I'll grab a 5k or two by then... and I would like to hit a 10k... I want to get ready to run a couple of 1/2 marathons in the fall...

BTW my weight has been stable... I'm still under 190... and fluctuate between 188 and 184... starting this morning I am now really going to give it a run to get to the low 170's

the last couple times I took a breather from weight loss I ballooned back up.. this time I held... so here I go again...

:)

185.4 this morning... and I felt a bit bloated... I feel like I am carrying a few pounds of water around my belly button... ?

Today is a rest day... to let my legs heal... my knee got kinda sore yesterday. (patella tendon)...

I will hit the gym today at lunch... hit the sauna and relax.

183.8 this morning.... really dropped water weight.

Ran 4 miles at lunch today... we were almost perfect at 5:00 per 1/2 mile... we finished in 39:47

It was a very nice run...

I will see how my legs are tomorrow... it looks like a lot of rain tonight so that may nix me going to trails... as long as it isn't in the 30's I'll go... I could do upper 40's and wet...

This is the first journal I ever saw when coming on here. Great to see you making so much progress. :) Keep it up mate.

update... since last post...

Ran 4 on thurs... trails... had a good run...

Ran for 29 minutes around a soccer field while my little one was practicing... and my 7 year old ran too... so for some of the time I was taking it super easy... I think I ran a dozen or so laps.. I figure I got in 2 miles... I also had to stop a couple times to talk to my 7 year old... :D

Tues... I ran 1 mile on a 1/10 mile indoor track... ran the first lap in 1 minute and picked it up from there... finished in 8:30... wasn't trying to break a record and was never breathing hard enough to have to breath in a pattern... kicked it the last lap other than that I was just running at a comfortable but quick pace...

Today... ran 4.. .in 41 minutes... basically 10 minute miles... but the uphill 1/2 mile we did in 5:45... and then were a bit slow on the last 2 miles...

My weight is good... hovering at 185... but the other night I had a 187 night weight with 18.5% BF... the BF in the morning is now 21 instead of 22 as well despite weighing in at 185 consistently...

OK... I feel good! I am strong... and sober...

life is good...

I am really back in the swing of things... Since 4/8 have been running more and more regular

since 4/8

4/8 - 2
4/9 - 2
--
--
4/11 - 4
4/12 - 4
--
--
4/15 - 2.5
--
4/17 - 1
4/18 - 4
--
--
4/21 - 3
--
-- (up all night monday with family thing so I was too tired to run on tuesday)
--
4/25 - 4
4/26 - 4
--
4/27 - 6
--
4/30 - 4
5/1 - 4 (fast for me... ran 4 in 28.57)
5/2 - 4

I'll do 6 tomorrow... then I will take Friday off.. run sat... take Sunday off...

183.4 morning weight... here I am at the cusp of breaking 183 I need not blow it... No massive friday lunch... no glutenous consumption of hotdogs over the weekend... ;-)

170's Here I come... and with that test run... I know I can run a sub 24:00 5k

I will run one soon... I have to target my next race...

I am happy!

Ok 5/3 pulled my groin... took some time off... ran 4 on last wed... 2 thurs... 4 sat... and 4 today... felt good today... will take tomorrow off and then try to do an easy 4 on wed... thurs I think I will try for 3 in the park... (hills)... take friday off... and then do 5-6 on sat...

Ok intersting thing going on in the weight category... I weighted in at 187 last night but 18% BF this morning 182.4 and 19.5% I think that is my first sub 20% morning BF in quit some time.. but I really haven't lost that much weight? OR have I... have I lost more weight but am retaining more water in general now that I am off the diuretic?

Who knows... I am feeling good...

181.x this morning 19% BF was 17.5 last night... weighing in at 184...

I started drinking some whey protein. I have been having a hard time getting enough protein... and I needed to add some to breakfast but need something quick... so I have been drinking a whey protein shake with me breakfast.

I feel stronger the last couple days? I am not sure why but I feel a surge of strength.

I am going to go to the gym and lift today... and hit the sauna...

179.8 this morning... 20% BF

I think the whey protein at breakfast is kicking my metabolism in the butt...

Who knows it could just be that I have strung 4-5 good days of eating together... I think if I keep this up through next week I'll hit 178... back to my bottom from when I was working Atkins... and this time I am way healthier...

It would be cool if I could be at the light heavy limit next month... :)

I figured this...

181 and 19% BF = about 147

x - x*.08 = 147
OR
.92X = 147

OR 147/.92 = 160

OK SO 12% bf WOULD BE... 167
AND 16% bf WOULD BE 175

sO i HAVE TO DROP ABOUT 3% Body fat to get to 175...

intersting

180 and 20% BF this morning...

Ran almost 6 miles at trails last night... we were at a very easy pace... close to 11 minute miles... with some walking after the ferocious hills... (so steep walking up them is tough)...

ran for over an hour... so I estimate we went about 5.5-5.75 miles... My legs felt fine... that wasn't pushing them at all... I wasn't exhausted when I got home...and my legs aren't bothering me this morning... :)

I think I will try to do 6 sat hilly... or 6 flat... I haven't decided... it depends on if I get company...

ok I am now having night wieghts of 180-182... and morning weights in the 177-179 range... so I think I have broken through the 180 mark.

Running going well... nothing hurthing... running 3-6 miles 3-4 times a week... need to get consistent on 4 days... and start climbing the long run... aiming for a 1/2 in august... I am looking to run a 10k the first week of july... I feel I am just about ready for that....

been taking 1/2 my bp meds... as I was having near pass out episodes for a bit... Need to go see the doc...

BP this morning was 94/76 and my HR was 57. The bottom number has been under 80 every time I have taken my BP the last 2 days... I will keep tabs on it... and suggest I stop the meds completely to my doc the next time I see him.

I think at 170lbs... and with continued running my HR will continue to lower such that the need for the beta blocker will diminish...

If I cut out caffein... and really watch my salt intake I bet I could drop my bp the 5 points or so I think it would take to really convince my doc to give the no meds a try...

BP meds on the decline

Ok... I had a near pass out on vacation last week... so I halved my bp meds again... (down to a 1/4 pill 2x a day)... well I forgot a morning pill... a couple days in a row... and was just taking the nightly 1/4 pill... well this morning was over 36 hours without one and BP was 119/81 with a hr of 59... last nights before bed bp was 110ish/70 something with a pulse of 49!

Rock on dude!

Ok update on my running... I am progressing

Last month I ran 16 days for a total of 63 miles (about 3.9 mile ave)

This month before today I have run 12 times for a total of 59 miles (4.9 mile ave). I will run mon wed thur & sat this week and get in another 20-22 miles...

so the average wont jump... I am going to try to push my long run runs up... I am doing a 1/2 marathon in Parkersburg WV aug 18...

So long runs will go... 8,8,10,10, 12,12, 10... then 1/2 marathon

I think the key is to just keep doing what I have been doing which is not pushing too hard... focusing on being injury free... I am not worrying about "RACING" this race... rather I am try to just run it comfortably. the 5-6 mile range is becoming easier... I am excited to see how my body responds to doing 8 this weekend...

That's awesome. I used to have borderline bp. Exercise definitely helps. If you're open minded about it, you might want to try meditation too. That can help some of the emotional causes of hypertension.

Thanks Gooch... I do some forms of relaxation and recongize the benifits of meditation. I do some progressive relaxive stuff that I was tought by a phychologist when I was in college and was seriously stressed out!

I do some breathing excercises to but I need to do them everyday but haven't worked them into a routine... so I don't do them very often.

Ok had a good BP this morning 110/84 left arm... 117/76 right arm... night weight of 178 and change... and a morning weight of ... 175.4 which is a new personal low I don't think I have been 175 since before I graduated college!

ok... TODAY MARKS THE DAY... I declare myself no longer obsese.
a BMI of <25 is considered Normal weight... and well at 178 and 5' 11" I am just under... also my scale says I am under 18% BF now pretty consistently which is another mark... so... I am no longer overweight or obese...

Ok now I continue because I am still at the high end of normal... and I know I don't have a large frame... ;-)

So I'll keep after my goal of 168. I also am going to update my signature and make 178 my current weight. Wow... I hope 175 wasn't an aberration ...

4 weeks until I see my doc again...

BTW I ran 5.5 yesterday in 51 minutes... I opened with an easy 9:30 pace for the 1st 1/2 mail then ran 1.5 miles at a 8:30-8:40 pace... then slowed back down to the 9:30... then ran some 10:15-10:30's for the last 2 miles...

At no point was I breathing hard! That being said my legs are in no shape to run fast for very long... I think and easy 4 on wed... then easy easy 6 on thurs... friday off.. then 8 on sat...

Even a lot of Doctors are saying the BMI is off base. It is maybe relevant if you are finely boned and don't have much muscle mass. I would consider 5'11 178 pretty slender particularly if you are male (I don't know what your gender is)
