sobo's death to BP meds journey

Ran 6 yesterday... my last post I must not have submitted??? Oh well it was I ran 2 and fast...

My 6 miles was two, 3 mile loops... I took a short break for gatorade between loops...

Mile #1 has a down hill uphill in it... Mile #2 has a steep uphill climb... Mile #3 is down hill first half mile... and second is a gradual uphill climb.

1.) 8:39
2.) 8:42
3.) 10:06
----------
27:28

Rest

1.) 9:58
2.) 9:07
3.) 8:16
-----------
27:22

I couple months ago the week before my first 5k I was happy to break 29 minutes on this loop. I am also doubting if the loop is 3.4 miles like the park map says.... I also learned they measure by driving on the road outside the all purpose path??? Somebody marked off a 5K so I am using their mile markers. If they are correct it is barely over 3 miles...

OK first loop I went out a bit too fast... and then knowing I was going to do another loop coasted in... I just went too fast up the hill in the first mile...

Second loop I started slow and just kept picking up tghe pace... and I was flying in the last mile... intersting... the last mile has the 1/2 mile marked... I ran the 1st 1/2 mile and last 1/2 mile in the same time... 4:08... and the second 1/2 was up hill!!!

I am scouting for my first marathon... right now my first choice is the Kentucky Derby Marathon... but there is a small marathon at Lake Geneva that looks interesting as well... I am targeting april... I'll build my base to 30-35 miles and then roll the long run from 13 out to 20... My running friend is going to set me up with a plan he has used for 20+ marathons...

I am both excited and scared about the marathon... I really don't know if I can do it... I am excited about trying because it is a huge accomplishement in my opinion... it is just something I never imagined I could do...

I need to drop into the 170's and that is another story...

Holy crud jsobo! Where the heck have I been? You are doing a phenomenal job my friend! I cannot believe you are now scoping out a MARATHON! You rock! I'm considering the Georgia "ING" marathon in March. Maybe we can spur each other onto greatness in training :) Good job man, you're doing great :D

Ran 10 miles today.... felt prety good... didn't encounter the dead legs at the end... however I also ran much slower this time...

I ran the 10.1 in 1:48:38 which is over 10:00 miles... I ran the first 6 with somebody running 11:00 + then ran a bit quicker the last 4... probably 9:00 miles to close...

I am very excited about my 15k... I feel very ready and figure I will do just fine... I am not sure I will be able to pull off 1:20:00 but I feel pretty certain I can break 1:25:00

then 3 weeks later I run the 1/2 marathon... this will be to finish... I know it is only 3 miles more but I will not have run 13+ by that point... I will be my long run of the week... I have run most of the course before and it is really flat so that is a bonus...

THEN... if that goes well and nothing falls off or is hurting I will sign up for the Kentucky Derby Marathon! and then a bunch of cold weather running to get ready for the April 28th event... :)

BTW 182 this morning... holding weight... but scale said 19% BF

OK I did 30 minutes of stretching last night... my left knee... behind and above... and in front and below... both inside part of the knee area have been bothering me just a tiny bit. It is actually slowly getting better so I figure it is not injured just maybe a bit over worked... sore if you will...

Last night I figured it could be due to tight muscles... and that if I did a bit more stretching I might work it out... well I seamed to help... the stretch that did the most was... sitting spread legs as far as possible then grab... one ankle.. then down in the middle ... then down to the other ankle...

I also did some groin stretching.. wow it was tight... I never realized how tight my muscles are... now I am more flexible than before I started running but I am talking compared to how they are at the end of my runs... I usually strech afterward... for about 5-10 minutes... but sometimes I just don't have time... but when I do I rarely sit...

OK... 1 week to my 15K...

The plan...

Monday... 3 miles easy!
Tuesday... Rest
Wed... 6 miles... 10:00, 9:30, 8:30 repeat...
Thurs 3-4 easy
friday rest
sat rest

Thanks sparrow... wow I missed you post... I logged in and just posted and missed that you had posted...

Thanks... my running is comming along great... I ran smooth yesterday...at a conversational pace... (most of the time)... and ran 3 in 28:35 which is 9:31 pace... anyways to run that pace a month or two ago would have been really pushing it (on that particular course)... it is really hilly...

Anyways I feel great going into my 15k... I plan on doing a really easy 6 tonight... and then maybe a very easy 2 on thurs... then rest 2 days and 9.3 in 1:20:00 but I will be happy as long as I am under 1:25:00... exactly 9:00 miles is 1:23:42... I feel really good...

My weight... has been stagnant... I just get so hungry after those hour and a half or longer runs... I am just starving for like two days... and eat too much...

Thanks again sparrow...

--- edit ----
yesterday it was 36 degrees and snowing/raining when I ran. I frooze my toes and need to try to figure out how to be ready for that cold for sunday... I hate to change what I am wearing last minute... but frozen toes could ruin my run... oh well... I'll see how it goes tonight...

Morning weight 180.6 That is a few days in a row that I have been 182 or lower in the morning. Stating I am 182 now so that I get past this hump. I updated my avatar.

I ran 6.18 yesterday.. 3.08 loop... 2x... first loop in 31:35... second loop in 27:55 The big difference is that my legs were warmed up for the second loop and the first mile is mostly downhill so I was able to open up and let the gentle grade carry me more... I think I ran 8:06 my first mile... but I am not sure about the mille mark... I am just a tiny bit sore this morning... mostly my quads...

I really like what I have been doing lately which is really taking it easy at the beginning of my runs and pushing later... I think it models more what I will do in a race... that being said... I probably ran too fast this week both mid-week runs were tempo runs instead of easy runs... my first loop was good... but 27:55 is a bit too fast... OH but it felt so good to be clipping along at that speed... :)

I think I should run 2 easy today... and then take friday and sat off... I am not sure when I will have time to run those 2... perhaps I'll tredmill 2 tonight... that way I can set the speed at 10 miles and hour and just run easy for 20 minutes... then stop!

I am sooooo excited for my 15k race... I don't know why... but I am truely pumped up and anxious... I think it is because I really prepared well and figure I will do well... I am just nervous... I am not sure if I should go out so fast... topic for the running board...

180.2 morning weight... Oh I know if I kept it lean... and around 2500 cals... I would go to 179.8 tomorrow morning... especially if I ate non-bulky protein... no beef... BUT that being said... I have my race sunday... and I don't want to skimp too much... I will take it easy today... I am carrying too much food in my intestines... somehow I got off my every day BM schedule and I am at 2-3 days again this week???? I am sure it is just food choices... we were having a good fiber source with dinner for a while...

Yesterday I did 5 minutes on the eliptical... just to get loose... and my quads were a bit fatigued... well I am sure they would have loosened up and felt great about 25 minutes in... hmm... perhaps I ran to hard wed??? I am sure I did too much tempo running this week... oh well.. the 3 days off until the race should be enough to make me fresh for the race...

Today Oct 27... 14 days until my doctors appointment... to get off the bp meds...

Since I started keeping track (july 31) I have run 176 miles.

I have run over 1 hour 9 times...

and lost just over 10 lbs.

I am going to print out my running log and discuss getting off BP medication with him... This is it I am ready... I did the work... I lost more weight and I excercised... like crazy...

:)

My race story Fastest of the Slow or Slowest of the Fast

... 187 morning weight... wow... I know I over hydrated... drank beer for the first time in 6 days... and had chineese food... but wow... ok... no big deal...

ok on to my race (15k or 9.3 miles)

They changed the course because the sherrif never showed to block intersections so we ran the 5k course in 3 loops...

I came in 4rth out of 7... but when you look at my age bracket the numbers are intersting... we were all bunched up... finishing 24-29 with only one gap... (26)

Race Position | time
1.) 18 | 1:12:02
2.) 24 | 1:15:33
3.) 25 | 1:15 34
4.) 27 | 1:18:25 ** me **
5.) 28 | 1:19:01
6.) 29 | 1:19:21
7.) 38 | 1:24:24

Start
The first mile was really crouded... I went out perfect at 8:27... I wanted to hit 8:30 but 8:27 was good...

Mile 2 I tried to relax and settle in an was telling myself not to race the 5k'ers... I ran 8:52... was ok with that... I felt good and figured I didn't want to push... Just run my race... forget the time just run...

I marked the first 3.1 a little late and hit 27:03... adjusted for my late push of my watch it was probably... about 26:47 (8:37)... I didn't realize I ran the first 3.1 at almost exactly the pace I needed to meet my goal of 1:20:22 (8:38)

5k'ers exit
And... only 1 guy in sight... only about 20 yards ahead... I took it easy just pacing him until we got the the slight downhill and I spead up a bit and went right on by him and gapped him by about 20 yards... then after the slight uphil in mile 2 of this loop there is a cul-de-sac and was I headed back out of it... I notice I had put more distance between us... a bit over 50 yards...

I also noticed going into that cul-de-sac that I was about a minute or more behind the next group of runners... so I was running alone... and even joked with the person at the turn around before mile 2 that I was either the fastest of the slow people or the slowest of the fast people... :)

The last mile of this loop I noticed that the guy behind me was closing the distance... by the 6.2 mark he was only about 25 behind me... and that last mile I was not feeling good... BUT... I knew there was gas left in the tank...

when I clicked my watch... I saw... 52:45 and did quick math and said 6+20=26... I need to run a 25:xx for the last 5k... Ok so 52:45 is an 8:29 pace... I was ahead of schedule... and here I thought I had to make up time??? Oh well I didn't really spend much time thinking about it... I figured I would just give it my all... I would kick the 1st mile... take it easy the second... and then burn the last 1.1... the little hill (grade) in mile 2 I figured I would be better saving something for the last 1.1

Now... how far in front of me is the next person... I was thinking that heading into the finish line (turn around) at 6.2... I saw the last person... and well I was closer than I thought... because this time heading around the school I could just see him before he kept turning out of sight... I picked up the pace for the first mile of the last 3.1 and closed a bit on that guy.. .taking it from about 150 yard down to about 75...

mile 2 I was trying to maintain pace but not push... so I could have something left for the end... I closed just a bit more and actually ran about the same as the first mile... I looked at my watch and saw 1:10... with 1.1 to go... wow I can make it.. I started picking up the pace the guy I was trying to catch was only about 50 in front of me... and WHAT... he slowed to a walk to grab water...walked a bit... and started running and now is only 10 in front of me... except I am turning over my feet quicker...

I passed him... check my watch... and turned it on... and stared going faster... I was going to break 1:20... :) I knew there was nobody in front of me I could possibly catch but no way these guys (who are in my age bracket and I know it) are catching me...

Now I am running so I am breathing hard! at a 2-3 rythm... I turn on the last stretch of road before I enter the school drive... and wow every inch of my body wanted me to slow down.. .my lungs were burning... (no stiches though... and I wasn't out of breath... yet)... I lapped a group of runners... turned into the school drive (about 0.2 to go) and started my all out sprint... and hmm... I wasn't going that much faster... he he... I was already almost running about as fast as my legs would go... past the basket ball hoops... lapping another person... around the bend... I could see the finish...

I see the timer clicking off 1:18:xx and really try to dig deeper... (nothing there) I don't go anyfaster but I didn't slow either... pumping my arms I here my baby yell "go dady!" I see my wife and 4 year old... yelling for me... I smile and cross the finish line and yell "yes 18:25!" about 2 minutes faster than my goal...

the next person in front of me was 1:16:29... and wasn't in my age group... So I was fastest of the slow and proud of my accomplishment...

Also I never experienced the dead legs I had in training...

BTW... My 3.1 times were

26:47 *
25:54 *
25:35

* subtracted 15 seconds from 1st loop and added it to the second because I hit my watch a bit late...
...

also the 5k winner in my age group ran a 24:03 and second ran 28:10...

I would have easily got a trophy there... McMillan running predicts my equivalent performance would have been 24:22... so would I have have won... hmm... maybe...

Anyways... Like I said to my wife... I am happier to have run 1:18:25 and be just out of the medals... than to have run 1:22:xx and have won my age group...

Today I am sore... but nothing hurts... My acheles are not hurting but they are sore... my quads are sore... my glutes... lower back... and even my stomach is a bit sore??? The big one though... my left knee... didn't bother me at all.. never even though about it... :)

I didn't mention it... but when I woke up that morning my left hamstring was super tight... it is really sore today.. but it didn't bother me during the race...

:D :D :D :D :D

:) I just realized something

26:47 (8:37)...
25:54 (8:20)...
25:35 (8:14)...

I ran a perfect 1st 5k... I went out perfectly at my race pace... of 8:38...

Of course I ran a quick first mile and a slow second... but averaged 8:38 like I was suppose to... and I did that just by relaxing and running my pace.

the second 5k felt hard... and somehow I ended up going faster?

I am still super pumped about the negative splits... and the fact that I smashed my goal time... I hope I don't find out later the course was short...

even still I ran well... I know I ran about the best I could...

To be honest I have never prepared as well for anything athletic as well as I prepared for that event. I trained hard... I knew the hill would kill me so I went out and trained hard for hills.

I had no way to know that the course would change but in my training I was running my mid-week 6 mile run as two,,,, 3mile loops...

The trianing of running the same 3 mile loop x number of times was great for this event.

Who hoooooo!!!!! I am soooo pumped up... the weather is awesome today... I sooooo want to go for a run... but I need to rest those sore muscles... doh!

:) 3 weeks until the fall classic 1/2 marathon... I need to think about a goal time... I am not planing to race it... just run it...

the 2nd 5k I tried to run tangents as best I could... there was too much traffic the the first 3.1

I wonder if the time differential was from running a straighter line... ???

I got a bit of encouragement yesterday... I picked up my 30 day script for my Bp meds and I spoke the the pharmacyst... and expressed my urge to get off the meds... and how I really think it is a bad idea to run a marathon on a diuretic... and asked how my doc should wean me off the meds... and if not what are my alternatives...

Pharmacyst said not to get my hopes up and that in her 20 years as a pharmacyst she has only seen it happen twice... and both times it was somebody young who lost alot weight...

OH YEAH!!!! That does it... I am mad now... there is no reason I can't get my body in awesome shape...I have been at it for 5 months now... at a year of working out 4+ days a week... running like I am... and if I drop 10 more pounds... no way I need those meds... URG!!!!!!

Oh I ran 4 miles today legs felt a bit sore still the first few... ran 9:30-10:00 for the first 3.5.... and burned the last .5... I know I shouldn't have but I just love going fast... I figure I ran the last .5 in under about 4 minutes... maybe quicker? probably :D that 4 miles was super easy today... and the hill was cake... I remember when I had a hard time with that hill...

ok... plan on doing an evening 6-8 tomorrow... nice and easy... I hope I can find a good 4 mile loop...

184 this morning BTW??? chineese food... msg...

should be 182-183 by tomorrow...

Great Job jsobo. I'm really proud of your accomplishment! I was reading your race and I felt like I was at the climax of a great book :) My kids were trying to interrupt me and I was like "SHHHH for a minute" lol.

Success stories like yours pump me up. I'm really excited for you to run the half. I think you have a great thing going on right now and you'll do fantastic!
Don't get too discouraged about the BP meds. You never know until you know. Until then, it only fuels your fire to run even more and even faster and thats a GOOD thing!

If you averaged 8:30 miles for the half (which I KNOW you could do) you'd bring in about 1:50-51 for it (hey, thats my time! haha) but I bet you could go even faster. To start it might not be a bad goal though.

Don't giive up on your goal with the BP meds either. My FIL dropped most of his BP meds after losing alot of weight and he was on a ton. Have you had your pressure checked lately. What are you on for BP control?

184 this morning??? still holding on to some water? or maybe I put on a pound or two??? Oh well I feel good and I know if I just eat better over the next month or two I will continue to slowly shed the lbs... especially as I approach 50 miles a week...

Going to do a super easy 8 tonight... I am going to make myself run slow...

Thanks sparrow... I am not sure if I am going to "race" the 1/2 marathon or not... I haven't run 13 yet... if I get a good 12 in sat... and 13 next weekend... and feel ok I'll race it... if not I'll run it for fun and go out slow and then try to run negative splits in from the 1/2 way point :D

I just don't want to push too hard and get an injury...

Thanks Missy! I'm on Ziac which is a beta blocker/diuretic... ziac = hydrochlorothiazide and bisoprolol... Hydrochlorothiazide inhibits the absorption of sodium and causes the kidneys to kick it in gear so you produce more urine... and therefore loose potasium ...

So for running my 15k I didn't take my meds that morning... and took them after I was home and hydrated and at lunch... it is a must (IMHO) to get off the diuretic if I am going to run a marathon...

The Bisoprolo is a beta blocker... it slows the heart... I am sure this affects my performance...

If when I get off them my bp goes up I want to try other types of meds instead...

My bp is normal 120-80 on the meds... it tends to go up as the day goes on... and in the mornings it tends to be lower... my hr... varies but if I catch it while resting it is in the 40's

I've lost 80 pounds... and now I am excercising regular... if there is ever a time to try to get off the meds now is it... and I have a bp monitor... and can keep on top of it...

Ran 0.1 miles yesterday... checked my watch... ankle twists (snap crackle pop) and ended up spread eagle on the pavement... hobbled back to my car...

Was super mad... upset... wanted to cry...

I felt so good. Snow had just started falling... and I was going to be running for another hour and twenty minutes...

1/2 marathon probably a no go now... not sure if I am even going to try to run tomorrow...

it doesn't hurt as bad as the last time I did it... URGGGG... I want to run...

You have a pretty good understanding of your medications. The beta blockers do cause your heart rate to lower and not respond exercise like it would off meds. Be careful and make sure you don't abruptly stop your betablocker, waiting to take it late won't hurt, but you can see rebound hypertension if you stop it suddenly. Has your dosage decreased at all with your weight loss? On a good note, even if you need medication you are definately becoming more healthy and hopefully preventing any hypertension related disease. Great job!

Sorry to hear about your ankle, remember RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) ;-) Hopefully it isn't a bad injury and you will be up and running soon.

OHHH NOOOO! Thats the worst.

I hope the ankle is feeling better. There is nothing more discouraging than an injury so close to race time. Seems my MO to race injured :( I hope you're feeling better soon John!

Was in Duluth MN for the early part of this week... Ran 4 on monday... and was running about 6-7 on tues... was out about 4 miles... ok so I was going to do 8... and my achilles tendon just went on fire... I stopped streched a bit and started towards the hotel and it just wasn't cooperating... major pain... URG...

Oh well.. walked back to my hotel the short way 3 miles instead of 4... in the rain... :)

If I have to take some time off of running I am going to hit the weights and get strong while the tendonitis gets better... so strange... it hasn't bothered me in a couple months... and then whamo it creeps up on me suddenly in the middle of a run... I hope I didn't tear something... I wonder if the achiles tendon was working harder to stabilize the ankle because it isn't that strong since I twisted it??? hmm... hadn't considered that... oh well...

No More ZIAC... accomplished...

Ok my doc took me off the diuretic! who ho... but he put me on a different Beta-Blocker.

He is taking a cautious approach... change 1 thing at a time... take me off the diuretic...keep the beta blocker since we know those are working for me... then if all goes well... then we will see about he beta blocker... basically if my resting pulse gets below 50 then we will start weaning off the beta blocker... at the docs office I was at about 58... I was hyped up though... I know if it sit still and relax... I can get it down in the low 40's... when I passed out about a year ago I was put on observation... and I kept doing breathing excercises to slow my heart rate... and kept setting off the alarm because my pulse would go down to 40 or lower...

Oh well I now have a goal... I need to really work on my diet... get real clean... and really detox... which means I really need to cut out the alcohol... Get some low BP readings...

I am so pumped to escape the chronic dehydration I have been living under for the last few months...

I so want to run... I might go for a short run tomorrow and feel how the achiles tendon is doing... it feels fine... we will see...
