sobo's death to BP meds journey

Morning weight 183.6

Very stiff and sore when I woke up this morning... left heal is sore... left Knee (behind) is sore and stiff... Right ankle is stiff...

I crashed last nite at 10:15. Kid came in and woke me up at 10:45... she climbed in bed with me until 11:00 then she went back to her own bed... I slept until 7:45... and I could have slept another hour or 2...

BUT I woke up at 4:00 AM to urinate again... this is happening more often now... I am waking up less dehydrated because I am doing a better job of hydrating but this getting up in the middle of the nite to go is getting old... I need off the diuretic... or I just need to not go to bed hydrated...

I guess I deserverd it last nite... I drank 24 oz glass of water between 9:00 & 10:00... but I emptied before I layed down in bed at 10:00...

Oh well... temporary problem...

185.4 morning weight

retaining a bit of water. Drank alot last nite yet very little in my bladder this morning? No BM in 2 days... ate my maintenance level yesterday... with beef...

left heel not sore today... right ankle doesn't hurt... one little spot is tender in the side of my foot...

Going to lift today at lunch. Tomorrow is the 5k...

184.6 morning wieght...

Woke up at 5:00 to use the bathroom. Got up at 8:30 and had to go again.

My legs felt good when I went to bed but they are stiff now. My right ankle is stiff and I am feeling just a twinge in my left heel.

I am pumped up for my race.

184.4 morning weight

I had a great 5k yesterday. It was hot an very humid but so what... I have been running in this all month... running in the heat of the day! My advantage... :D

It started at 5:00 PM so I at my lunch at around 1:45... apple and a tuna sandwich... hydrated well so I had to go at about 4:30...

I was really pumped up at the start... I let the obvious rabbits line up infront of me... I was about the 3rd or 4rth row of people. The air horn sounded and I pushed the start on my watch and took off. I tried to stay controlled and a bunch of people took off sprinting. I relaxed and got into my pace concentrating on the turnover rate of my legs trying not to overstride. I got passed by about a 1/2 dozen people in the first 1/4 after the initial sprint. In the next 1/4 I passed 1 person...

hit the .5 marker and I hit my watch... 3:33 ??? double take... 3:33... ok get ready for the hill... (I knew the second .5 was a hill) concentrate on maintaining turnover rate of legs... just shorten stride a bit... I kept telling myself that... we hit the hill and whamo a few people started coming back to me... the hill got steeper... and I passed 2 people... then a 3rd... and I wasn't pushing... I was totally in control not really breathing hard... I could still carry on a conversation although not easily. passed another person...

hit mile 1 marker clicked my watch and 7:49 ok... still felt good. All the really fast folks were way ahead by now but there was 1 more guy about 50 yards in front of my... and I noticed my turnover rate was the same as his... so I picked it up just a bit... when I got to within 15-20 yards of him he looked over his should as we went around a corner... and then matched my speed. I picked it up just a bit more... gained a few feet and he matched my speed. A little uphill 50 yard or so long was comming up... so I maintained the speed I was at... as soon as we hit the top of that grade it leveled out and went around a turn to the turn-around cul de sac... so when we hit the top of that hill I gave a little two step burst then a pace just a tiny bit faster than him... I was getting barely closer...

When I got along side him he slowed... and I continued at that pace...

Rounded the cul de sac... and could see I put a bit of space between me and the last person I passed... he was now being passed by a group of 3... 2 men and a woman (who finished 3rd overall for the women)...

Now I was just trying to keep my pace... I kicked it down just a tiny bit as I was really operating at my aerobic max for a while and I was getting very uncomfortable... and I wanted to make sure I had my legs for that down hill...

Now I am all alone... nobody in front of me... come out of that developement to the long straight road and notice another guy up in front of me... to far to think about catching and I don't have enough in the tank to go any faster.. hit the 2 mile mark and I hear footsteps...ok just hang on to the down hill... telling myself to relax...

At the top of the downhill I hear footsteps close... that guy in front of me... is really pounding his feet going down the hill and he looks really gassed.... I let myself pick up speed and am going really fast... I am barely checking up... and notice my wind is coming back... focusing and making sure I can turn my legs over quick enough so I don't fall on my face... :)

I pass the guy in front of me at the bottom of the down hill.. hit .5 to go...
trying to relax and visualize my final sprint... I go around a turn and this is the last strech before we go under a covered bridge and then make the final turn down the "main street" and cross the finish line...

I here footsteps but I don't care I am running my race now... this guy goes sprinting past me... and gaps me by about 50 yards.. then settles into a good pace... I reach the point I had decided earlier I would begin to acclerate at.. .so I pick it up and realize I am not going to catch that guy... then I hit the covered bridge thing... and I go to all out for the last 100... except that guy in front of me seams to be about gassed... I reach full speed and he is only about 20 in front of me... I pass him... make the final turn and kick home... I couldn't believe I was able to go all out that long...

I finish at 25:00 and am shocked...

I never imagined I could run that fast especially after stuggling through 2 miles earlier in the week at 9:03 per mile... to run 8:03... I am very happy with that!

I finished 3rd in my age group... the 2 guys in front of me were 20:xx and 21:xx

Yesterday 182.8 morning weight
Today 184.4 morning weight... ate wings... with hot sauce... which means I consumed a bunch of sodium... so I am just retaining a bit of water... 188 nite weight.. last nite... and the day before nite weight was 189...

-6.5 2 nites ago... last nite... only -3.6

Last nite I had a reading of 18% body fat on my scale... that is happening more often.. I am sure that soon I will see it say 17.5% :)

4 mile run at lunch...eat lean... 6 miles tomorrow... day off... then 6.4 on sat and I am sure I will grab and hold 182...

I lifted last nite... first time I really couldn't get into my lifting... I did lift more than usual on bench and lat pull down... than I usually do... but I just didn't feel like lifting... Oh well... 2 days of running... :) Then I will probably go to the gym friday nite with the wife... and lift again..

On a whim I decided to run the trail by the lake I parked at for my 4 mile run... I think that is where I proposed to my wife!!! lol...

I ran 5 laps around the the loop... I looked at the trail map and it is a 1.2 mile loop BUT it looks like .4 of the loop is going to an fromt he parking lot... so I did approx 4 x .8 miles and 1 x 1.2 = 4.4 miles... I figure I ran approx 10 minute miles... nice and relaxed... left gym after shower at 182...

184.6 Morning weight... hmm... what is going on...

No way I am gaining weight... I think I am just holding water in my intestines... I really feel a bit bloated too... anyways I weight the same as I did 1 week ago? oh well... this was a good week fitness wise... and eating I was over 2000 cals every day but Sunday where I had 1800 but ate a tun of food... for lunch (bunch of eggplant with cottage cheese & tomatoes)... I was soo stuffed the rest of the day I couldn't eat much for dinner... but it was low call...

so... I kept my deficit closer to 600 cals this week... So my loss should be somewhere closer to 1 pound... I didn't go up... I'll look at it that way.

Ran 2, 4.4, 6... 12.4 so far... and I want to put in either a 5 mile or 6.4 mile run. this weekend... to get me closer to 18... my left heel is sore! I have to figure out what causes that...

-- I felt really strong at trails tonight... I was the pace setter in my group and got way out in front and had to keep stopping because I kept getting lost... I think I learned the route though... I think next time I will have it down.

Running log

Weight Graph

callories burned vs eaten... Ignore the two days I didn't log food followed by another day I didn't completely log... those were >2700 cals...

ate a pork burrito for lunch... feel like the pilsburry dough boy in Ghost Busters... Going to Gym to hit the sauna... and relax... maybee I'll get hit with a plasma gun and explode into a giant mess of goopy sugar...

I haven't posted in a while... I twisted my ankle 2 more times... and haven't been able to run as much as I would like... I got mad and just ate what I wanted for a few days... and this week I actually ran yesterday (1.5 miles @ 7:45 pace) and today did 4 at a nice easy pace and felt good. I left the gym at 182... so I didn't gain much in my 2 days of eating... although my weight balloned up to 188 because of all the salt I ingested... and has now finally started to come back down...

I accomplished a goal which was to do more than one pull up... at the beginning of this (June 26)... I couldn't even do 1... the other day I did 3 and failed on the 4rth.. :) I also did free weight bench press and really liked it... I did 3 sets of 10 @ 135 lbs... but failed on the 3rd set at 8... and needed help on 9... and needed alot of help on 10... on the machines I was doing 105 & 120... this was harder because I had to control the weight... but I was able to do more weight... OR I just did??? who knows... I know this... that I haven't had DOMS from the machines in some time... and I did that monday and I am still sore today...

Glad to see you back man, I was starting to get worried as I read the last page and noted the dates were all 2 and 3 weeks old. Good work on the 15k, I think I'd die if I tried to hit a sub 9:00 mile right now. I take it you are now off the BP meds? And those pullups are a pain, but stick with it. I'm up to 5 unassisted, good form, in the middle of my runs and loving it.

thanks MilitantGeek...

Took fri off... sore from 4 miles on thur... sat... went to Ohio State game... left heel was sore so I didn't run in the 5 mile race on sunday... Did yard work instead... cut grass... chainsawed trees... stacked wood...

Today I ran 4 miles at a nice and slow pace... like 10 mile pace... I felt awefull... I need to do some speed work either tomorrow or wed... and get in another easy 3-5 before sunday...

Maybe I'll do a 2 mile test again tomorrow... take wed off... go to trails on thurs... take friday and sat off... run 5 miler on sunday. Then I really need to start running slow for a couple weeks and just getting my miles up for the 15k...

I need to add 3.5 miles to my long run in 4 weeks... so slow runs... will get me there...

I'm not really worried about finishing the 15K fast... just I want to finish... and if I could do it under 1 hour and 30 minutes I would be happy...

If all goes well... maybe I'll run my first 1/2 marathon in Nov...

Ran 2 miles...

.4 easy
.4 fast!
.4 easy
.4 almost fast...
.4 easy (.2 real easy... .2 easy + )

I felt like I was breathing through a straw... the cold air got me today... My legs felt pretty good today... had stiches right at the end... (last 10 feet)... The thing I feel happening is that my easy is starting to be quicker... especially if I concentrate on not slowing myself down... but landing so my momentum continues to propel me forward instead of shocking my leg.

I don't know how to explain it... but sometimes I get in this rythm where it feels like I am not pounding the pavement... but rather gliding above it... when I run fast I feel like I am not pounding but when I just run easy I feel like I usually am going... bump,... bump... bump... like a rock drummer stomping the base drum... but lately if I pick of my leg turnover rate just a bit and make sure I don't over extend my leg (keeping the knee a bit bent)... it feels more like... pst... pst... pst... like the a wire brush on the symbols in a samba...

I have read that 160+ steps per minute is what elite runners stive for... which has gotten me to thinking... plus I really focused on how fast I was turning over my legs when I ran the 25:00 5k... I think for me it is easier to increase my tempo than to increase the stride length...

6 miles on the trails tomorrow... 2 days of rest... then the 5 miler on sunday... :)

Pledge Day...

OK I have been at 184-186 now for a month... because I am drinking too much... Alcohol... Beer... My nemesis...

I am pledging to go alcohol free until I hit 175... I am so anoyed... I want to be 175 by Nov 16... that is just over a pound week...

I AM going to start logging my food again starting tomorrow... I am going to get under 20% BF! Die ZIAC DIE!!!! No more BP MEDs! URG... Alcohol is my obstacle to achieving my goal... (and mexican food)...

Lets go John...

182.8 morning weight... 1 day of ... dare I say... sobriety... I hit the gym last night again... I got in a upper body workout... I did :

5 minutes on eliptical @ 180-200 steps per minute low resistance... just trying to get the blood pumping...

Bench Press (free weights) 10@115 , 10X2@125... (wanted to do 135 but no spotter)
Pullups... 3, 4, 2, 10x2 with 50lbs assist
dips 10 with 50 assist, 10x2 with 60 assist.
hanging knee raises 10x3
Hyperextensions 10x3
machine deltoid flys 10@50lbs , 10x2@40lbs
Low row (machine) 10x2 @ 90. (biceps failing... I knew I couldn't do another set without reducing the weight... so I figured I wasn't getting much more work on the back)...
DB hammer curls 10@30, 10x2@25 (finish off those biceps)...
DB shoulder shrugs 10@40, 10 @55

I figured my biceps would be a bit sore today... but only my front delts and lower back have any muscle soreness... a little tighness in my triceps/biceps... chest and lower stomack... but not sore... I'm sure the dips caused the soreness... I was really working hard to get 10 on the second set... and was really working on the 3rd... I'm glad I'm not shy... I have to sound hilarious grunting like I do... you know I got my massive 35 pound plates on and I am grunting away doing my bench pressing... and there is this guy next to me with 2, 45's on his doing it like he is just warming up... :) Like I have said before... it is not a competition... it is about me... and me only when I go to the gym...
