Sleep and Weight Gain

Does not getting enough sleep cause weight gain? I'm not familiar with the effects of sleep in weight loss. I just thought you burned more calories when you lack sleep because.. you know, you're awake more.

I read somewhere that sleep deprivation will cause people to gain weight but it said it's because you get a ravenous appetite because the body's making up for the lack of sleep.

So.. yeah. What happens?
 
From what I've read, the actual act of depriving your body of sleep doesn't cause weight gain on its own. It's due to the fact that we are more likely to make poor food choices, like sugary foods, to help give us quick energy boosts. Also with lack of sleep comes less of a desire to exercise, as we are to tired.

I am not positive if this is the only reason, however I think it's a safe bet to say your body needs sleep for many reasons other then just help with weight loss.

i agree. I think when you don't get enough sleep, there are lots of side affects and they all roll together ... X causes Y which causes Z, which affects X, etc.
 
my g/f has problems with sleep and it causes her problems from her back, to food, to obvious fatigue ... and that just rolls back again to not being able to sleep the next night.
