Skittles Weight Loss Diary

I have been overweight most of my life. Shortly after having surgery at the age of five, I began gaining weight. By the time I was in sixth grade, my weight had increased to well over 200 lbs. During my college years I my weight reached 286lbs. I couldn't believe that I had ever gained that much weight and I hated myself for it. Unfortunately, I never really did anything about it. My senior year of college, I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease, an extremely overactive thyroid. My body was producing more than four times the normal amount of thyroid hormone. I realized that I had a pretty high metabolism because of the disease but it seemed to leave me hungry all the time. So I was constantly eating. I forced myself to eat less and tried to fill my time with more interesting things like hanging out with friends and excercising with my best friend. I lost a ton of weight. At graduation I had lost down from a size 28 to size 20. A few months after graduation I decided to go back to school to become a teacher. When I left home for school, I weighed 199 lbs. For the first time in my life I was happy, and would actually walk around campus holding my head up high. Which was completely unlike me. I always the one walking around that seemed to be staring at something interesting on the ground. I wouldn't speak to anyone unless they spoke to me first. Even then, I was extremely uncomfortable being around other people simply because I was always judging myself in comparison to them. Unfortuantely, during my third semester at school, I came down with bronchitis. It took five months to get over it and I wasn't able to go to class because I couldn't walk ten feet without collapsing. After months of antibiotics the doctors put me on a steroid and an inhaler as a last resort. I finally got over the bronchitis but I did so with a rapid weight gain. I was once again back at my original weight and size 28 again. My friends who had once been bigger then me were all losing a ton of weight and now I was once again that fat kid in the corner. They both did so by eating healthy. A couple of weeks ago I decided to start eating healthy and working out as much as my body could handle. I have started out really well. I am now in a 24 and losing more each day.

I'm really proud of myself today. I actually ate fairly healthy. For breakfast/lunch I had a healthy pizza (whole wheat tortillia, two tablespoons pizza sauce, reduced fat mozzarella cheese, and half a serving pepperoni) and it actually tastes really good. For supper I had a baked chicken breast, a gardenburger, and a serving of diced tomatoes. For Snack I had a 100 calorie little debbie brownie. I did 50 minutes of aerobics. The only problem I had today was I really wanted to get up and go running. I set my clock for ten a.m. (I don't have to be at work till 1), ate breakfast, and sat on the couch and watched T.V. I had myself convinced that it was too cold outside to go running. My mom stopped by and when I answered the door I really it was actually really warm out, probably about 70 degrees. I really felt bad about not going running. How can I convince myself to atleast go outside and see if it's cold before I convince myself otherwise. Maybe tomorrow I will go running, I already know it's supposed to be cold but I atleast have to try. One thing I have tried to keep reminding myself of today is that i'm not on a diet, I am making a Lifestyle Change
Some things that I have found to be really helpful:
1. Don't drink soda- I used to drink about 8 cans of soda a day and only about three cups of water. I now have only had soda once in the last six months. That one time was at christmas and I found that I really didn't like the taste of it anymore.
2. If you are watching T.V., flip channels when the commercials are on. Many fast food resteraunts count on you seeing there commercials and brainwashing you into eating there unhealthy food.
3. Read the fitness magazines whenever possible. I bought and issue of fitness magazine and read it cover to cover. It had a lot of great tips on healthy foods (especially which foods to choose at party's), excellent excercises, and even beauty advice. When I am on break at work I read the other magazines while eating my lean cuisine dinner.
4. Don't eat fast food. I have only eaten fast food three times in the last two months. My addiction is arby's but since my friend got married and moved thirty miles down the road I don't get to eat there for free anymore. If you must eat out, go for healthier foods like grilled chicken sandwiches or salads, rather then the soggy, fatty burgers.
5. Don't eat after 7 p.m. Some people say that it doesn't matter how late you eat that you will burn the same calories whether you are asleep or awake. I don't agree with that though, my best friend turned me on to the idea of not eating after 7. I think it is much easier to stick with the diet if you don't eat late. Late night eating is when we tend to pig out on completely unhealthy foods.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!

Today has been a really great day with my diet. I weigh the first thing every morning. This morning I weighed 265, which is great, I have lost two pounds already this week. I still have four more days this week to lose more. My goal is to lose at least 2.78 pounds a week which will put me to my goal weight by January 2009. If I happen to keep up the way I'm going right now I might even be able to reach my goal by July. Currently, i'm losing about 5 lbs. a week. I doubt that it will keep up that steady but we'll just have to wait and see. I might be able to keep it up if I can possibly find a place to run that it isn't cold. Unfortunately, right now I can't afford to join a gym.
For breakfast/lunch today I had two egg whites, one piece of turkey bacon, just a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese, and half of a whole-wheat tortilla. I started out trying to eat it as a wrap, but I didn't care for it at all. The tortilla was just too dry to eat that way. Also, about a 12 ounce glass of skim milk. I have really gained a taste for milk, but it has to be skim anything else leaves a greasy taste in your mouth from the fat. For supper tonight I had a healthy pizza (1 8 inch whole wheat tortilla, 1/3 of a cup of part skim mozzarella cheese, two tablespoons pizza sauce, and 8 pepperoni slices), and about 12 ounces of skim milk. I have found that drinking milk with each meal helps fill you up and you don't eat near as much. Tonight, I will do an hour of aerobics before going to bed. I like to do my excercising late at night, cause it seems to help me sleep better.

Hope everyone had a wonderful New Years.

I was just figuring up what I ate today in my fitday journal and I was wondering how can a whole-wheat tortilla be healthy if it still has 25 carbs. How many carbs are you supposed to have in a day?

I think the daily recommendation is 48g of carbs for a 2000 calorie diet. But I don't worry so much about how many carbs I've taken in. As long as my total caloric intake is under 1200 cals, I get 100g of protein, 25g of dietary fiber and 7 servings of fruits and veggies I figure I'm doing good.

The only thing my trainer has ever said about carbs is to reduce them and if you intake them, make sure they're whole grains that are high in fiber. If I remember correctly the ideal guideline is 4g of fiber for every 100 calories of carbs. His concern is more about intaking enough protein to sustain muscles and getting enough fiber.

Thanks, I was trying to figure what I had eaten today and ended up being 551 calories, 19 grams of fat, 55 carbs, and 43 protein. I wasn't trying to go to far with the diet but if the figures on fitday are right then my carbs and fat still seem a little high and the calories seem actually to be kinda low. Especially considering that I do 50 minutes of aerobics a night. I think yesterday I had 750 calories.

So far so good today.

Breakfast:
3 tbsp egg whites = 1 egg white
1 cup of chipped sun dried tomato turkey
1/4 cup diced, canned tomatoes
1/4 cup part-skim mozzarella cheese
The bad part: 2 tbsp ranch dressing

total calories: about 350

Fat content seemed extremely high according to fitday

How many fat grams should you have in a day?

The amount of fat you should be intaking varies by person. Here's a quick quiz you can take to figure it out:

It told me I should only have between 10-15g per day. But today I'm probably going to have 30g and yesterday I had 34g. Lol.

Honestly though, I don't really pay attention to the fat aside from making sure it's good fat. Basically, I usually only use olive oil, avocado, dairy and whatever fat is in my protein.

Thanks, it said I should be getting 10-15g, so i'm not too far off. Yesterday I think I had about 19g. If I figured my calories right, I am way below that but I am eating what makes me feel full. Yesterday that happened to be only 551calories. I know that seems a little extreme considering I also do 50 minutes of aerobics each night. But, it really is a decent amount of food, it's just that the foods are really low calorie foods.

Tonight for dinner I had a piece of chopped sirloin, 4.5 ounces raw. I have no idea what the weight was after it was cooked. I do know that quite a bit of it cooked away, but how much, I have no idea. I think this was the first red meat that I have had in about three weeks. In fact, I can't remember the last time I ate red meat. I also had a gardenburger, for the carbs. They say you need to have 6-11 servings of bread a day. I think the garden burger was the only bread I had. I am trying so hard to be healthy but, having been the fat kid my whole life, I don't even know what healthy is. I still have to do my aerobics tonight, but I don't really feel like doing it. It has been snowing all day. When I came in from work tonight, we had about three inches, which is a ton of snow for around here. We're supposed to get up to six inches. All I really want to do is lay in bed.

I have finally decided on what my mini-goal is gonna be. I want more than anything to be able run in a race. So my mini-goal is to be able to run a 2k by spring. I have never been much of a runner. I have played softball most of my life, so my body is conditioned for short distance running. So I think i'm gonna check on the internet to find a good way to train for distance running. I know this is going to be a challenge, but I really want to do it.

Doing a run is awesome motivation. Once I kick this cold I'm going to get back to training for a 10K in April. The last race I did was a 10k and it was awesome. Hopefully I can ramp up to a 15k an then maybe even a marathon.

Wow, I would love to be able to compete in a 10K. I'm hoping to gradually work up to it but I know it is going to take a lot of hard work. I just hope I'm able to to do it.

Don't worry, you'll have no problem passing running milestones. They just take consistent training. Once you finish your 2k, I'm sure you'll catch the running bug.

Today is starting out wonderfully. I woke up this morning on got on the scale first thing. I have lost four more pounds which is a total of seven pounds this week. I am so excited, eventhough it's probably only water weight, it is still encouraging. I know one thing, I am wearing clothes that I haven't worn in a while. For breakfast/lunch I am having one of my healthy pizzas, they taste a lot better then the diet pizza's are a lot better for you. I know not to expect a weight loss like I have had this week to happen every week, but it would be really nice if it did. I only need to lose 2.78 pounds to reach my goal by next January, so seeing seven pounds gone this week is definitely exciting. I'm just hoping I can stick with it.

I broke a little bit from my diet today and had a chilli dog at work. We have a really awesome company called Ballpark Hot Dogs (not the name brand), they come to my company on Thursdays and I always have one of their hot dogs. They are absolutely awesome. But I only ate one and they have about 300 calories including the bun and chilli so it shouldn't be to far off. I think for supper i'm going to make baked chicken and baked potato chips. The total calories will be about 300 calories. I definitely have to make sure I excercise tonight to work off that hot dog.

The baked chicken and potato chips were awesome, especially considering that there was only about 300 calories in the whole meal. I decided I would post the recipe in my diary in case anyone was intereseted.

Home Baked Potato Chips:

Pre-heat over to 400. 1 Whole potato cut into very thin slices and placed into a non-stick pan. Spray tops of potatos with cooking spray ( I personally like the butter flavor), and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon season salt. Bake 20-25 minutes. Remove chips that are brown and crispy, continue cooking rest of chips until brown and crispy. (1 large baking potato makes 3 servings)

Baked Chicken:

2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon paprika (I substituted season salt since I didn't have any paprika), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon italian seasoning. Coat chicken (boneless, skinless breast meat) in the seasoning mix. Place in a pan that has been coated with three teaspoons of canola oil. Spray top of chicken breast with cooking spray. Bake until white all the way through the thickest part of the meat. Seasoning mix is enough to make (4 chicken breasts).

I also drink two glasses of skim milk with breakfast and supper it adds a few extra calories but it helps fill you up and keeps you full for quite a while.

OMG! Where did you find a 300 calorie chili dog?! I am so jealous!

I think they're a local company. I maybe be wrong about the calories, but that was what fitday said was in a hot dog w/bun and chilli. But I figured one hot dog once a week wouldn't hurt. Especially since that was the first time I have eaten lunch in a week.

This counting calories thing is so difficult. For breakfast I had cream of wheat, turkey bacon and egg whites. Which would be about 160 calories plus my milk which I think is about 180 calories since I drink about 16 ounces with breakfast and supper. But I was only able to eat about five spoons of the cream of wheat, the slice of turkey bacon, and 1/3 of the egg whites. I have no clue how many calories I ended up having.

Today for lunch I had half of a lean cuisine dinner. I might have eaten the whole thing if it hadn't been salisbury steak. I didn't like the steak so I decided to only eat the macaroni. I also had a Swiss Roll on my last break. That was definitely not on my diet. I think I should be OK though, as long as I keep my calories low for dinner.
