SkinnyKate's Diary

Okay Kate, when was the last time you changed up your workout? Are you always doing the same distance, speed, intensity, etc.?

Unfortunately, as you lose weight, your metabolism goes down. This is because your body is getting smaller and requires less energy. So you can either eat less (I do not recommend this) or you can increase the number or steps you take each day to compensate for the drop in your metabolism.

Also, I wouldn't recommend you ever go below 1200 calories. Doing this could through your body into starvation mode which could keep you from losing weight and actually make you gain because your body will store everything for the next time you starve it.

Just a couple thoughts. :)

hey paula,

yeah that is what I am reading too. That my workout needs to get shook up some. I hate to admit this, but I havent really used my bands much, so think maybe its time I DID!!:D I just gotta find it!

Also, I am still waking up feeling a lot of retention in my body. I think that is part of it too. I also missed two walking days over the weekend, so that may be a part of my problem.

So agreed! Not going to lower calories, just going to mix up the workout now. Im not terribly worried. Just temporarily frustrated!

I have to totally agree with Paula on this Kate. If I recall correctly, recently you've altered your work out, adding a 4th mile, and increasing your speed. I know you said you do some jogging etc to increase your intensity. You really are doing everything right!! Becareful with the calories and not hitting starvation mode. Oy, the plateau's bite, but that would be even worse! :)

I think either its my TOM or I'm plateauing myself right now. I feel your frustration! :) I would look into some interval training to help change out your routine a bit. As my trainer reminded me, our bodies and muscles get very accustomed to the same motion. Even if you've added distance, your body is going "Hey, this is still easy, I know how to do this walking though pretty dang well right now! " So, think of somethings you might be able to do to challenge the muscles you work and motions you utlize. I know lunges are out. :D But, maybe picking up an inexpensive jump rope and trying that for 10 minutes a day to start.

Some other ideas, attempting to adda bit more running/jogging into your walks. Or break it up with long skipping. You might feel silly, but heck I used to do this to break up my long runs, and losen my hip joints, and y'know what.. to heck if I look silly, it was pretty dang fun!! :)

Lets see. I'm trying to think of things you could do that would use different muscle groups and be somethign you'd enjoy. :) Any bikes at your house? Also..really look into that heart rate monitor, to be sure your pushing yourself hard enough to be in your target zone of heart rate to burn the right amt of calories. :)

Really.. just a few ideas.. I hope this gives yous ome insight. But it sounds like you are doing your own research and will probably have an even better hold on things soon enough! :D So I wish you luck.. but I KNOW you'll get there.. :) You really have come so far. You give me inspiration that I can get to your weight too! :) So perk up.. things will get better.. that scale will start moving in the right way..

(Otherwise.. my theory is that Skyler and Paula gave US their pounds this week when they lost them, and we could just kick some booty lol!) ;)

Oh shoot Skyler, they figured us out! ;) LMAO Dana! :D

YES!!! I need to get my H to fix the tire on my son's bike and start that again(IF i can get him to help!) AND I can start the jumprope. I LOVE to jumprope! I can get a cheapie one today! Great great idea!

So definitely on the jumprope. Definitely NOT on the lunges:D Also still trying to find where the $%^ I put my band. Gotta work my upper body now.

Im just thankful I havent lost my 'want to' and am going to plug through this. You know what else Ive been doing wrong? Ive been drinking a lot more coffee than usual. I need to cut down on it.Whenever I write the 50 cals for coffee, its because its two cups each time. So if I write that twice, thats four flippin cups! That is probably not helping much.

Ok, I reeeally need to get my walkin shoes on and go walk...will be back later to visit everyone's diaries later. Wish me luck!

hey kate, sorry to hear you are frustrated, as i think i am the queen of frustration. i hit a 8 month long plateau and it was terrible.

things i learned (which you probably already know & actually probably told me yourself ;) ):
*CHANGE IT UP! i took this as many different things - work out in the am sometimes vs not always in the pm / change the foods, but count the calories, change the eating times (more in am, less in pm, more at lunch, something like that)
*ADD WEIGHT TRAINING - i think you do some already? (not sure) but if you do, i would think you probably have to change the routine - different exercises, etc - if you don't, you really need to in order to get your metabolism working at full speed again...
*DON'T JUST WALK - i was running, only and couldn't figure it out. as difficult it is if you dont belong to a gym (as i dont), it is figuring out how to "cross train" with limited equipment. The bike sounds great as does the jump rope! Great ideas. I don't know if you have steps, but to increase intensity may work. Or, possibly VHS/DVD tapes to 'confuse' your metabolism and get it working. I think with cardio, its the intensity, duration, and frequency, so changing one or two of those may get you moving...

*INCREASE THE WATER - i drink a lot of coffee as well, but increase the water...that never hurts and could flush you out some possibly - cant hurt to try!!!

you told me once that you exercised in the am and also in the pm and that worked before - maybe try that?

Overall, i think, you need to change it up - your body is getting used to your new improved self and doesn't know that you want to lose even more (as YOU HAVE LOST TWENTY POUNDS - WHOO-HOO!!!!!) so you need to trick it. It is a matter of figuring out which aspect to change or which two to change to get that stupid scale movin' again. You CAN do this. That is not the question, it is figuring out what your next plan will be to lose the next 10 lbs and then from there, it will probably have to change again! Change can be very good ;).

my 2 cents...probably borrowed from you and a few others in the past...
hope you had a good walk.
Sarah

(by the way, i would never 'give' my lbs to you or dana!! LOL, i am sprinkling fairy dust weight loss on all of us - we can all celebrate together!!!!!)

skyler, mmmmmwah! I love ya darlin! You and paula and dana and cassie and soo many others are really keeping my spirits high!

Right on the water. Ok. I DO drink a gallon a day or so, but adding even one extra glass may well help with the coffee. I reeally love my coffee! Once in the morning and sometimes the afternoon. On the walks...Well, today I did FIFTEEN stair sets! And did them FAST! On my walk today, I also ran much further than I ever have before. That is what the problem was I think more than anything ! The weather gets me down, the rain, the cold, and I doubt I was goin as hard as I could have been. The bp didnt help either. NOW however I am REALLY starting to see myself get in much bette shape and I NEEDED to push harder! I was getting too comfortable. Today the weather was nicer. not so cold. still foggy and wet tho.I am STILL pouring sweat down my back and face from my very intense workout! Felt great! And I have kinda skipped the afternoon walks for a while..but am going to try to add them back again, within the next few days. I guess I am mentally waiting for the nicer weather to return.

I just read the part about you talking about jumprope! I always feel like things are going to start falling off my body when I jumprope. haha

I'm glad to see you are noticing yourself getting in better shape. Good for you! Work it girl! hehe

Have a great day!

Awesome work Kate! I love that feeling after a great workout - pouring with sweat! Makes you feel victorious, like you met the challenge. :)

You just continue to inspire, so thanks! :D

Dont even ASK about my bladder problems... after four pregnancies, THAT little problem tends to show up during jumping episodes....and yeah, that SUX.

Hi Kate. Yes I'm using you. I just really felt the need to smile and get a little pick me up and you were the first person I thought of. You know, I gave away my trampoline because I got tired of having those "little accidents"!!! What we suffer for our children huh!

I wouldn't either Kate... I wouldn't even give my lost pounds to my worst enemy... wait a minute- on second thought. ;)

But, you are in a (small) rut and you will get out of it.... hang in there! We're all wishing your pounds off for ya! :)

Good morning Kate. I'm sprinkling some fairy weight-loss dust your way today. I hope that scale moves for you. :)

Hey Kate. Just dropping in to say hi and see how you are doing. The weather has been so dreary here, hasn't it. I know what you mean about it getting you down. All this cold and clouds and rain. Its been really foggy here the past couple of days. Won't completely burn off til mid afternoon. Makes you feel like you are constantly walking through a haze. Surely this must be the last of winter for us way down here. Spring has to be right around the corner. Hang in there - sure that sun and warm temps will be back soon!

I haven't jumped rope since I was a kid. If I was going to do it now, I would have to make sure I was somewhere completely alone. No witnesses. Wouldnt want a repeat of the lauging riot that took place when my son watched me attmept to run on my treadmill (the joy of having children. lol. )

Hoping your weekend is sunny and warm! :)

thanks fluff! at least i saw a peek of the sun this morning! yay!

Also gooood news..no havent lost a pound or anything. BUT, it seems my hypothesis was right on the money. Asked Doc why no more weight loss. She asks how the bp meds are doing. I say surprisingly better, and workouts are much better. I ask her if I am regaining the initial fluid lost when I started taking my HCTZ(water pill) her word? Absolutely. Which is also why I dont feel 'tired'' anymore!

Soooo, Im relieved about this, and not NEARLY so disheartened now! I realize my body was playing 'catch up' and now whatEVER I lose is pure ol fat!

I am still at 149..but plan to see that 146 in a matter of weeks if not less!
