Skinny guy here for his wife

Hi, all. Before registering, I read many posts on this forum. Seems like there's a lot of good advice here.

I'm a skinny guy (6'1", 168 lbs) married to an obese woman. We both quit smoking last September. She gained weight, I didn't. That's the way it always has been with me, though. She was already very overweight before we quit, and now it's worse.

The positive about the weight gain is that she's now motivated to lose weight. She's gone from having poor eating habits to watching calories, fat, carbs and so on.

We joined a gym about 6 weeks ago. I'm going not just to "be there," but also to try to get in better shape myself. I'm 58, and my wife is 55, so we have to make up for a lot of years of eating the wrong stuff and not exercising.

If my wife knew I was posting here, she'd slap me silly. She doesn't want to take advice or follow a plan, and she certainly doesn't want to go public about all this. So I've been trying to learn as much as I can about losing weight (as well as gaining muscle mass for myself), and then passing on what I've learned as subtly as possible.

This "stealth" approach has its downsides, though, as there are things I can't find answers for. For example, after six weeks of working out on the treadmill and the stationary cycle, my wife's calves are still very large. But they're now solid muscle! This isn't what she was expecting, nor was it admittedly what I was hoping for. Yes, I would love to see my wife be closer to the lovely 110 pound woman I married than to the 200+ pound woman she became. I know that she wants that as well.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to learning more. Thanks for having this forum.

Well welcome to the forum. That is the first step. What is your wife doing now to try to lose weight? How tall is she and how much does she weigh? Does she workout? I would advise cardio for starters. It is a good way to blast way fat. By the way my husband is the same as you...He is 6'3 155 (soaking wet) Lucky guys!!! Good luck. You will find a lot of tips and advice on this forum :blush5:

Thanks for the reply, lifesunreal. My wife is 5'4". We've been together for 41 years, but I haven't known her weight since about 1980. She's kept it very secret. All I know is that she gradually went from having a very beautiful figure to being extremely overweight. She's definitely in the 200 to 240 pound range.

She's doing the treadmill, the stationary bike, the ab crunch machine, and the two hip abduction machines (one works the outer thigh and hip muscles, the other the inner thigh muscles).

I've read so much conflicting information about weight loss that I don't know what's true and what isn't. When I find a number of people in agreement on a point, then I figure that is true.

Welcome!

You'll find a lot of information here in the stickied threads. :)

As long as the calories and food is in check with added exercise, I think she'll be well on her way to a healthy weight and lifestyle.
