Situps, pain in the back

I do regular old fashioned situps, but I seem to strain my back and shoulders an awful lot, which makes it harder to do more. Anything I can do differently?

One more question....Is it too much to do situps every single day? Should I be taking a break? I've heard you are able to work some muscles every day, but others every other day.

old school sit ups aren't very good for the lower back which is what you have found out...just try regular floor crunches, leg raises and ob crunches for starters but make sure you make your abs do the work and not your back or anywhere else...do them slowly and deliberately...train them 2-3 a week for no more than 15 reps...if crunches etc are too easy find a variation that lets you only do 10 - 15 reps and no more

Yup. Old fashioned situps have been found to strain the back, switch to crunches.

No, you don't need to do 200 a day, every day. Quality, not quantity is what matters. If you are working them adequately, they need rest just like any other muscle does.

Ive heard alot of things that arent true as well. Abs are muscles and need their rest as well. Abs twice a week is plenty.

Your abs get worked during alot of other movements, you just dont know it.

Thanks! Sounds like I've been over-doing it hardcore LOL

lol, you should try various other abdominal workouts not just situps... a varied routine is much better, why do 100 situps when u can do 10 reps of others.

just my 2 cents. and from my own experience.

about ur back, um. i used to get back aches as well doing some type of workouts, my friend told me that i had a weak back, so i basically started doing back workouts to strengthen it. maybe that what you need to do as well. a solid back is important . imo as well as a solid core.

Your core area includes muscles of the back. So you want a solid core you need abdominal strength along with lower back strength, i.e lats, erector spinae.
