Shoulder sort of hurts during Upright row

So yeah, I'm pretty new to this. I don't thin I'm going too heavy at all. I'm using dumbbells at 20lbs each. I do curls at about 25lbs. (Don't laugh, I'm knew).

Anyways, my right should feels extremely sore after I start doing them. I'm really sad, because I really want to do this exercise, as one of the members had recommended it as part of my routine.

Also, where am I supposed to feel the most "burn" on a deadlift? I felt a little on my stomach and lower back, but mostly my arms felt like they were going to snap after a while, lol.

Uprow apparently doesn't agree with everyone and can cause probs with the rotator cuff. I would recommend maybe a cuban press instead as this is good for the rotators.

Be careful if you are feeling deadlifts in your lower back as your lower back should be tensed but not flexing - if it does you will damage your back. Make sure that your spine is naturally arched and keep it that way.
Basically you are going to feel the burn most from whatever is your weakest link to start with as the deadlift stimulates most of your body.
Just a word of warning though, it may be because you aren't keeping your arms completely straight. Make sure you don't do this as you can tear muscles as the weight gets heavier.

All the best

Deadlifts work your lower back and hamstrings mostly, but your whole body really. If they're bothering you drop thw weight down a little or start doing a few less reps.

alright, thanks guys! I think it might be my rotator that is causing the problems, I'll try switching exercises.

For the deadlift, my arms have been perfectly straight, I'll bend them. And my back isn't doing a lot of work, but I don't really feel much burn anywhere but my arms. But my
heart rate sky rockets when I do it.

Here is a good link to take a look at. It has some rather good pics of the shoulder, and explains the rotater cuff in depth.

Best wishes,

Those pictures are a little confusing, but yeah, I'll try another exercise.

Also, one more question. I don't have the physical strength to do more than a few chin ups. Instead of doing those, can I simulate them by doing a heavy amount, close grip, on the pull down machine, or would that use different muscles completely?

Do lateral raises instead. I believe i said to let me know if they bothered you and id change the exercises. ;)

I like chin ups soooooo much better than pull downs its not even funny. How many can you do???

I would stick with the chins for now, but let me know if you start to get tendinitis (Sore inside or outside your elbow).

Watch this for deadlifts.

I dont think he meant you should bend your arms. He meant dont bend them.

i had a lot of trouble and pain while doing upright rows, i spread my hands out a little more and i use less weight, i do them very slow and strict, i dont have any pain anymore.

Ya when i do them i use dumbells and start witht hem in front of my quads and bring them up and outside my chest. This activates the medial delts much more.
