Should you work out when you're sick?

how long to wait after being sick?

I'm just starting to get over a sinus/upper respiratory infection that had me pretty sick. I haven't exercised in over a week because of it. I feel that it peaked yesterday and I'm finally starting to get better. My only problem is that I never know when to start doing things again, and usually push the envelope and get too hot and relapse. How long do you wait? Until all symptoms are gone? Until you feel strong enough to? Thats usually when I do, and get sick again.

Clearly you can't work out if you're in the midst of a SARS attack. But if you are a little under the weather, coming down with a cold or getting over one, should you stick to your regular workout? A modified workout? Stay home and sleep until you are 100%?

depends....

a very generic/general rule of thumb is, if it's above the neck, head to the gym. If it's below the neck, stay home and rest.

That said, I've seen it go both ways.

My personal opinion: If you feel like you have to drag your ass to the gym, it's probably better you stay in and rest. If you want to workout yet you have a runny nose, sore throat, etc..... have at it!

Working out whilst sick? Advice, please.

Help. I know this has been addressed here before, but what's a good rule of thumb to use when trying to decide to work out or not work out when sick?

I'm suffering from a really nasty cold (no fever). I'm all stopped up and drippy simultaneously. I'm hacking up yellow stuff (chest/lung issues?). And I'm a little tired.

My workout this morning left me a drenched mess. I don't want to make things worse, but I want to continue to work out if I can.

Also, does a person's body need more energy when fighting off infection or sickness? Logic says yes, but I want to know for sure. Sadly, I'm not really hungry. I just want to drink lots of mint tea.

Thanks,

Tamara

I would go se ethe doctor. I am not knowledgealbe at all on health stuff but when I hacked up yellowy stuff one time I was told it was pneomonia (went and saw a doctor who diagnosed it as beginnings of pneomonia), luckily I only hacked that stuff up once and so it didn't turn into much but if you are hacking it up more than once I would say pneomonia and I would not exercise till talkingt with a doctor

It depends on many factors. If you feel really bad then I wouldn't workout if I were you.

There have been a bunch of times when I've made myself to go to the gym in spite of my fever and the results weren't pleasant. I remember this one specific time I almost passed out.

I was doing heavy weights for my legs, and I learned to have less intense workouts if I choose to workout anyway.

I would be concerned for you if it seemed as an excuse on your part (which it obviously isn't, since you have real symptoms), but if you ever wonder if it's an excuse, do the workouts anyway but at easier pace.

Yeah, thanks for the replies ladies and gents. I decided to continue to work out but take it a little easy. As it turns out, I've just got a nasy head cold and sinus infection. My lungs aren't killing me, but I am having problems breathing because of my over-active snot factory. I guess if I had been feeling really fatigued then I would have opted to really take it easy, but that wasn't the case.
