Should I go to the gym?

Hi all,
How are you doing? I signed up for this forum today after checking out some tips on weight loss.

Anyway, I am a 24 year old woman in NY. I am 5'3" and weigh a 120 pounds. I am a vegetarian and I have a naturally thin body shape and so I have hardly exercised all these years. But off late I have started to get a noticeable tummy paunch and my upper arms have become flabby. So I have started exercising.

I have been exercising at home for the past one week. I start with a 20 minute jogging around the block and then back home, I do ab crunches, dumbbell exercises, sit ups and push ups (20 of each). The routine at home lasts another 10-15 minutes.

I noticed that the first 3 days, my entire body was feeling really sore but from the 4rd day, I was fine and I didn't even sweat that much. I have read that you need to work out a sweat to see any results. Now my question is, will these at-home exercises help me tone my body or do I have to sign up for gym?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Those are all great what your doing! Good for you by having motivation! Have you ever thought about a personal trainer. They give you great pointers! they can even rev up your work out so you can get that extra sweat boost! Then evenually you'll have the knowledge to do different ways of excercising! There's also fitness magazines that have great tips! You can go to that is a great website! It's a Womens fitness magazine! But becareful with the ads, they have a lot of supplements that I would stay away from. But other than that some great tips! Good luck with everything your doing great already!

There are so many great exercises you can do at home that there isn't any reason to spend the money on a gym membership unless it would help you stay motivated. The social side can be fun, but I see so many women who are so busy talking that their workout is clearly secondary.

Even naturally slim people need to exercise. It isn't about the weight, it is about the fact that human bodies were designed to move. One can be slender or normal weight and be medically obese (which means one's body fat is too high) because lack of exercise and the typical western diet lead the body to store excess fat even if it isn't obvious based on bulges or rolls.

Keep moving! My favorite non-gym exercises include power walking, running, jump rope, or hiking for cardio. I don't do much in the way of sit-ups or ab crunches as they don't do much for the belly - focus on core work instead - planks are great! I swear by lunges for the legs, and if I'm really feeling spunky, I do sets of burpees and mountain climbers. Actually, youtube videos offer lots of great ideas and tips for doing nearly any exercise properly (by which I mean body alignments).

Mix it up and it will stay fun and interesting. Good luck!

Hi,
it all depends on your mindset - if you have the a strong mindset you can do it all by yourself with bod-weight based exercises, which is what I do for years and years now. But that mindset is not very common, so people have to find a million ways to get themselves to work out.
If you have the proper mindset - you don´t need anything beyond your own body-weight.
Hope that helps!

If you will be enjoying your time at the gym - go for it! Its good in the gym because there will be a lot of people to help you with your program. Professionals will be able to help you focus on the areas that you want to be toned and some lost forever.

It is also nice in the gym because it gets more social and you get to share experiences and learn a lo as well.

sweating is not an indicator of weight loss, or hard workout or the like.

It is an indicator of hydration.

You have added activity, you need to add water. The sweat is an indicator that uyou are properly hydrated.

Drink more, and that satisfying sweat will return.

Welcome to the site.

That's completely up to you my friend. If you like socializing, by all means become a member of a gym. Personally, I'd rather work out at home. I have done it and I have achieved great results

Well according to the information which you have shared . I think your weight is enough . You do jogging which is very good for your health . But if you want to make your body fit and build muscles then you can go for gym and your body would also look attractive by doing training.

Honestly you should not join in any gym. What are you doing right now is perfectly fine. If you’re not sweating during your workouts, it may be due to a variety of factors. Some people just have fewer sweat glands than others. This could be due to fewer sweat glands.

Just try to intensify whatever cardio you like most and see the result.

Now come to your flabby upper arms where you are mostly concern. Basically gravity is to blame for your flabby arms. The triceps area is where your upper arm flab is most evident, but you must exercise the biceps as well if you want to get rid of your flab. The best exercises for toning your arms and getting rid of upper arm flab are ones that focus on your triceps and biceps.

Read out couple of exercises I recommend to you with care:

• Try to stand up straight with your knees slightly bent and your feet about shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in one hand above your head with your arm fully extended. Place your other hand on your elbow to support your arm. Bend your arm at the elbow and lower the dumbbell behind your head. Extend your arm and lift the dumbbell back up above your head. Keep your upper arm still and lift using your triceps. Repeat several times and switch arms.

• Lie on your back on a workout bench with a set of dumbbells, one in each hand. Hold the dumbbells close together above your chest with your palms facing inward. Keep your shoulders locked in place and bend at the elbows as you slowly lower the dumbbells down to the sides of your head. Slowly extend your arms, lifting the dumbbells back up above your chest. Use your biceps and triceps to lift the dumbbells. Repeat the exercise several times and rest briefly in between sets.

• Now, stand next to an exercise bench with your inside leg and hand on the bench and your other foot on the floor. Grab a dumbbell with your other hand and raise your elbow to your body so that your upper arm is parallel to the floor. Extend your lower arm by bending at the elbow, lifting the dumbbell upward toward your back until your entire arm is parallel to the floor. Slowly lower the dumbbell again. Repeat the motion several times using your triceps to lift the dumbbell. After several repetitions, reverse your position and repeat the exercise with the other arm.

• One of the best exercises for toning both your biceps and triceps at the same time is pushups. Lie face down on the floor with your hands palm down close to the shoulders. Slow lift yourself upward while keeping your back and legs straight. Your legs should be together as you are balanced on your toes. Lift your body up until your arms are almost fully extended. Then slowly lower yourself back down until your chest almost touches the floor. Repeat the exercise several times focusing on using your arms and chest. Diamond pushups are another type that utilizes the triceps and biceps. It is the same as the standard pushup except your hands should be together directly under your chest. Your thumbs and index fingers should be touching, forming a diamond shape in between your hands.

I believe you got my point. The more you focus on triceps and biceps the more result you would get.

That would be completely up to you my dear! But if you are a busy mom like me, getting fit at home would be the best thing for you.
