Should I get P90X now or later?

I'm new to these forums so I thought I'd say hello to everybody first.
Hello!

I have a question for you that I hope you can help me on getting me in the right direction.

A little background of myself first:
I'm a guy that use to work out regularly back in high school, but ever since I graduated, I quit exercising and my weight started climbing. I'm the heaviest I've ever been (250+ lbs = 9 years after high school) A lot more than 170 pounds I use to weigh. My wedding is coming up at the end of October this year, and I'm trying to make a lifestyle change of eating healthier and exercising. I've started a diet plan about 2 weeks ago trying to lose an average of about 2.5 pounds a week. I've cut out alcohol, sodas, all the junk food, and am eating healthy small 5-6 meals a day. The only thing I'm doing for exercises is 30 minutes on the elliptical every morning, but I plan to up it to an hour once my body is ready. With the chart I'm going by, I should be around 167 pounds if I'm able to lose atleast an average of that amount per week.

My question:
I've recently heard very good things about P90X, but most of what I hear are for people that are someone fit already (atleast a lot more than me!). I know that it will be extremely difficult, and will take a lot of dedication. Since I've got a routine down pat for exercising on my elliptical everyday, do you think I should wait til I lose a good 50 or so pounds and then maybe get P90X? Or should I start on P90X now so I can have the time to go more than one round? The thing I'm worried about is if I'm starting P90X now, I won't lose as much weight as I originally planned. (Even though I'll have more muscle) But I don't want to be too big....just want to be an average weight for a guy my height. (5'11")

So recap question:
Work as hard on elliptical to lose as much weight as possible the next 4 months THEN get P90X and try to really slim down the last 3-4 months?
Or get P90X now, so I can have more time with strength training?

I also don't have a gym nearby where I live, so that's out of the question. That's why I was interested in P90X.

Just want to be a healthy weight and look good by the end of October. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd suggest you get it now rather than later. Don't worry about not being able to keep up with the workouts completely. I started P90X when I was at your weight roughly and am about midway through my 2nd round. It's almost laughable how pathetic my performance was that first week...compared to now. But don't let that discourage you, stick with it!

If you wait to start any weight training until you've lost 50 pounds, there's a very good chance that 10-15 pounds of that loss will be muscle! Incorporating weight training helps minimize the muscle loss so you should be doing it at the onset of a weight loss program. The chances of you having "more muscle" in October than you do now is very slim. So don't be mistaken with the notion that you'll "put on some muscle" doing P90X while in a severe calorie deficit. You will indeed become stronger but you will most likely still lose some muscle mass. It's just the nature of the beast being in a 1250 calorie deficit that you're striving for.

Summary: Do it now instead of later! :)

I honestly know nothing about p90x, but from all of the commotion about it, I hope that it is worth the money.

Are you logging your calories everyday? The food you eat and the calories in them will do more to lose weight than the cardio/strength plan. Just so you know, I do have a strong cardio/strength program but I now know that what i eat determines 70 to 80% of my weight loss.

Thanks for the responses, and I went ahead and ordered P90X. I'll probably do the classic routine first, and then do the lean program afterwards. It'll be hard work, but I'll be ready for it! Thanks again.

How is P90x working for you currently - what Phase and week are you in? This program is advanced but if you do what you can and follow the nutrition plan and take your supplements you will see termendous results.

You will be pleased with your results but if you want more ripping and weight loss after your 1st round of 90 days you can do it again. The success stories you have seen some people had to do multiple rounds of P90x. Many people have lost 20-25 lbs on the program in the 90 days and have a wonderful transformation.

Congratulations on taking the next step to being healthier!

Hi, I would also say that incorporating interval type training into your current routine will definitely speed up your weight loss! P90x is a wonderful workout that is intense, but can be modified to fit your needs/abilities! It comes with a preparation dvd I believe to help beginners out. It is essential to strength train in order to burn more fat! P90x is definitely challenging, but it is important to push yourself a little if you are looking to drop some pounds! Let me know what you think of it and if I can be of any help! I struggled with weight loss for years; finally lost about 40lbs with lots of good work outs...learning along the way! Good luck on your journey=)
