shin splints

Hello,
I get shin splints all the time. I figured as I got more fit they would stop happening as much but they arent. I get them if I jog, jump rope, sprint anything. I just try to stretch and ice them. Do you have any other suggestions?

I'm sure he knows what shin splints feel like. We all have had them. You need to ice them by 48 hrs after the injury, the tibialis is swollen and you may also need to take an anti-inflammatory but consult with yoru physician about that. and get shoes with an arch so there is proper distribution of force and your tibia wont take on what your soleus is responsible for

You need to find out what "kind" you have. I had stress fractures in my tibia, killed me to run on pavement or jump rope same kind of issue you had. Since I've lost 35 pounds they've mostly gone away. I run on a treadmill and do weight bearing lifts, dead, squat etc.

You need to have a bone scan done to see if it's stress fractures-not much can be done per my Dr. It could be compartment sydrome which I think I also am dealing with. I'm told they to a "pressure" test by plugging a gauge into your heart and one into the muscle of your lower leg to see the comparable pressure. If it's excessively high in your leg you have compartment syndrome. This is when the muscles of the lower leg swell up and bind in the sheath that contains them. I was told surgery is the fix here. I'm guessing by your picture being overweight isn't an issue. Oh, you might find a running shoe store that might be able to diagnose your foot landing. I went to one in Seattle and they video tape you running bare foot on a treadmill and review to see if you need a certain type of shoe.Find out what kind you have first then try to deal with it. You could be outta luck in any case.

Good luck,

MG

Shin splints are the work of the devil!! lol

4 years of track and field and they never went away. I dont really know if there is anything to do to get them to not happen. If u find a way tho let me know ASAP!
But to help after we ran or at then end of practice take an ice bath or just tape a bag of ice to your shins before they start hurting the next day

ugh, i hate shin splints

i'd like to eventually graduate to "real" running outdoors but damn shin splints...i agree w/ some info above. was stressed to me to be consistent with before and after stretch, and still not good at it, lol.

Year ago I found this exercise device in a running magazine. It was a metal bar fashioned in the shap of a T with anothe extremity in the shape of a T. One of the Ts would fit on top of your foot, the other under your heel. The bar reached forward, and you could add weight to it. Then, you simply lift your foot up and down.

I haven't had shin splints since - and it has been 20 years! It seems that as I exercised the shin muscles, the area became more resistant to injury.

I also do foot flexing, concentrating on using the muscles in the front of your shin. Although there is no resistance, it seems to work quite well. give it a try!

I dealt with severe shin splints for a year. Mine actually abated once I ran more outside. I think the surface outside strengthens the supporting muscles since you have to learn to run with dips, turns, different terrain etc. When I do too much treadmill running now I get them back.
