Serious dilemna.

Alright, as of right now I'm about 6'1" tall and weigh about 150 lbs. Over the last year or so I've lost about 30 pounds, starting at 180 lbs. I go running often now and many of my friends are on track, and I run long distance, regularly 2 miles every other day or so.

Here's the problem: I'm very skinny now and I'd like to bulk up, however I fear that this will damage how well I do at distance. I've been planning to run long distance next year for track for a while now, and talk about it with my friends often. So I have two roads to choose from, to bulk up or to keep working for long distance. I don't know if it's possible to do both, let me know. Any help here would be appreciated.

If you arn't wanting to give up your running build your anarobic work out around your running. Make sure you are monitoring your progress which should tell you if you are over training. You probubly don't want to "bulk" up but adding some muslce shouldn't hurt. Honestly with that kind of mileage I don't think you will be able to bulk up

Start slowly so your body can adjust because it seems like you are already pushing your self with your running. HTH

You will need to run a lot more than 2 miles a day if you want to be a serious long distance runner. I would recommend you alternate 3 days a week of total body weight training with 3 days a week of running during the "off" season. Your running days should be 2 medium distance days and one long distance day. You should gradually increase your daily distance up to 3-5 miles on the medium distance days and 6-12 miles on the long distance day. Shooting for at least one or more 12 mile runs the week before track season starts.

It's not serious distance, really. I'm in highschool, and it's only indoor and outdoor track. It's not cross country or anything, so you don't do that many miles. I can do two miles with relative ease, but since that's basically the max for indoor track I need to work on my speed now. I'm starting slowly with running, because I'll be a junior and this'll be my first time actually doing track or anything, seeing as how I never use to run.

But yeah back on subject, you're right I didn't mean bulk up entirely, I just want to throw on some muscle. Wouldn't that require a calorie surplus either way, and if so how much? (Estimate of course.)

Serious is talking around 5k calories per day. Lol. Have fun :D
