Scoliosis

I have scoliosis, and I'd really have to go to a doctor to check the progress on it, but the curve in my back causes a bulge on my left lower back somewhere around my kidneys. I'd been told by a doctor before that it probably came about as my growth spurts came, and as a teenager I wasnt very active...so, my muscles couldnt support the change in my stature. I've even been told that if not kept in check, and left to degrade, that it would interfere with my normal heart and lung efficiency. I'd like to know some exercises that would keep this in order for as long as possible...

I am 57 and recently had a hip replacement and now have some new pains in my back because of a leg length discrepency. 3 years ago I had a bacterial infection in a disk in my spine called Diskitis. When it healed my spine curved and bumps out at my lower back. I have always had some back pain due to being unfit and overweight for many years. After I recovered I continued swimming and going to the gym to stay fit. 6 weeks ago I added a back exersice on a back bench where you bend at the waist and cross your arms over your chest and use the back muscles of the lower back raise your trunk. I have noticed an improvement in my back pain since adding this. I am also going to see a chiropractor soon to see if there is anything else I can do to correct these problems.

What Derwyddon said.

YOu may even get referred to a special trainer or physical therepy.

I would serously look into this. I have seen people with Scoliosis really turn their lives around with the proper training. Ask your doctor for a referal.

You should definitely find yourself a good orthopedic surgeon.

I had major scoliosis as a child. I wore a back brace for about 5 years but my spine just keep curving so when I was 14 I had to have rods put in my back. They had thought I was done growing before the surgery but I grew another inch or so in the following few years so one side of my back stuck out several inches farther than the other. So when I was 17 I had another fun surgery called a thoracoplasty which basically involved cutting out a portion of each rib along that side of my back. Each surgery had about a 6 week recovery (plus some before I was 100%)

Now I'm 23 and my back is just fine. I really don't have many limitations on what I can do, though of course I can't bend my back at all (I get praises all the time for my posture :) )

But definitely find yourself and orthopedic doc whom you can talk to about any issues or concerns you have because scoliosis can be pretty serious, especially if yours is anywhere near what mine was.
