Sclady's hopeful journey to being healthier

Ok I read a few posts and just decided to jump in :waving: because

I need to lose weight

I need to get healthy

I need support

I have several health issues going on, some I can control and some I cannot I went to the doctor Wednesday and asked for something to jump start my weight loss thinking it would be the motivation I needed. She prescribed me 300mg wellbutrin and 500mg 2x daily of metformin. I was already on wellbutrin so the dosage is just increased. I weighed 246 on my scale on Tuesday morning. I will journal that scale reading since I have regular access to it.

I think the hardest part of doing this will be my pepsi habit. I just don't do diet drinks so either they have to go or I have to drastically cut down on it. It is the only vice I have left;) I usually am successful losing weight if I eat the foods I usually do and cutting the portions. I seem to get really out of whack if I cut out anything completely. I really do not enjoy cooking anymore which is also problem but I have done it both Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Regular exercise is not in my life now with the exception of physical therapy I am going to for my back problems. My therapist and I are starting now to make a home exercise plan I can do and she will teach me what to add as I progress.

I hope I can keep this going...

I have not set any type of goals so off the top of my head:

starting weight 246

first goal 226

next goal under 200 I will take 199 :)

my ultimate goal would be 170 but I would be thrilled with 180!

I can so relate to the health issues and exercise thing. A few years ago I had some thyroid issues that ended with half of my thyroid (and the tumor attached to it) being removed. Now everything is back on track in that vein, but the extra weight I packed on has done a number on my knees and back. I already had a knee problem and the extra baggage made it worse. Not to mention that the excessive amount of nothing that I was doing while the other issue was being sorted out weakened my back to the point where moving around at all caused a lot of pain. Which of course made me want to stay still even more, which mean I gained more weight, and on and on.

Working with my trainer we developed a routine that would be easier on my knees...only to find out that while I was still a mechanic I managed to damage the muscles in my forearm and it never healed properly, so now I have to work around that as well.

But the more I started to do the more I was able to do. My first day at the gym had me dieing at a leisurely pace on the elliptical for 20 minutes, and I won't even talk about my embarrassing 5 minute excursion on the stair climber.

Now (only about two months later) I do 20 at a steady pace on the elliptical as a warm up and consider 45 minutes on the stair climber a light Saturday workout. If someone would have told me two months ago that I would have this mindset I would have gotten a stomach cramp from laughing at them. As long as you are determined, once you start you will be amazed at your progress. At least I was.

I really hope you stick with your plan and wish you the best.

Hey there sclady. Ooooh, that Pepsi habit sucks!! I remember way back when I used to only drink sodas. They were diet sodas though, still very unhealthy. Now it's only water or the occasional glass of Crystal light. My body is now so used to this that it doesn't really want anything else.

I say quit the Pepsi habit all together. I bet if you eliminated that and did nothing else you would lose a great deal of weight and become healthier. I know that quitting can be so hard. Your body will definitely crave it for maybe the first week, but then it will be so happy that you got rid of it.

I'll keep an eye on your journal. This first step of starting is probably the hardest part. I know you can do it!!! :)

I know I SHOULD give up the pepsi habit, I just don't want to but I probably will once I get over this blah feeling from increasing the Wellbutrin. I have already reduced my intake and added some water.

Yesterday was an okay day but probably not weight loss worthy but not gain worthy either. How long does it take for giving up the soda to not be so hard. I am dreading the caffiene withdrawals:ack2:

I'd give up pepsi altogether..I think if you've recognised that it's an addiction then the best thing to do is just stop :) Can I ask why you don't do diet drinks? One can of coke is 60 % of your daily sugar allowance. You can do all the exercise and healthy eating in the world but you are putting yourself at a disadvantage from the beginning if you don't curb your soda intake!
I have a Weight Watcher's buddy who has managed to cut down from 8 cans a day to just 2. She has one first thing to give her a boost and then, if she manages to have a good day with diet/exericse, she has one with her dinner. A great deal of it is routine, I'd imagine.

Anyway, good luck :)

It may also help you to think in terms of curbing your soda intake by the amount of money you spend on it. That helps me a lot, if I can't wrap my mind around something in other terms bringing down to dollar amounts puts it in perspective. For example, my husband was drinking about $70 worth of Cokes a week. He didn't believe me until I made him handle the budget for a couple of weeks, including his Coke intake. He likes going out to dinner now and then and once he saw how big a dent in our budget his Cokes were making he curbed them quickly.

As for the caffeine, he opted for sweet tea while he's at home...instead of a half a dozen cokes...you still get caffeine, but fewer calories and if you make it at home you can control the sugar better than buying it off the shelf.

Diet drinks give me a headache. I have started converting to sweet tea. Tomorrow is Monday and we will be back on a schedule so I will have a small glass in the morning. I think tea will carry me through the day, if not I will have a little in the afternoon. I have done okay today so far. I appreciate all of the responses.

Yesterday was a good day. I was down another pound this morning but want Fridays to be my "official" weigh in day. I need to start planning my food to help keep me on task. Just 10 minutes of exercise at therapy today because it was my massage day.

As far as quitting the soda, if you drink a lot (3 or more cans daily), try cutting that down to one a day for a few days before quitting altogether. I found that really helped reduce my caffine headache when I did quit.

I used to drink 5 or 6 cans of coke daily, but now I haven't had a single caffinated beverage since mid-February. And I can't tell you how glad I am to be free of that! For one, it's very expensive. But what really got me to quit is the calories. I was drinking 700 calories or more a day in soda! Think about it, that's 4900 calories a week or 1.4 pounds worth of calories. And not to mention the sugar! There are 41 grams of sugar in Pepsi, that's like 8.6 teaspoons of sugar. :ack2:

That's what did it for me. Like I said, I cut down to one can a day for a few days, then just quit completely. I only had a headache for one evening and I stop craving it after only a couple of days. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I did not eat well yesterday because I was on the run and I did not eat all day until supper and that was a huge mistake. I felt so sick right before I did eat and I got sick when I ate. I knew I shouldn't do that but at the last minute I got called to give my nephew a ride to an appointment and back and that made my day from 10:30 until 7:00 running. I need to buy a few snacks to keep in the car for just such things. I think I will try the cutting back to just one soda in the morning for my caffeine habit and after a few days cut it out. I think i have to just give it up. I am feeling kinda sickly i think from the Metformin. Just let me say if I eat pancakes with syrup again I will probably die from the GI issues:eek: I only ate just a little with an omelet. I also need to rev up my liquid intake for I am always a touch dehydrated when I go to the doctor. I will make an effort to drink more water. I am happy with the progress I have made. The more I see that scale move the more I will be motivated!

Ok...here's the deal. Soda, let it be Coke, Pepsi, Mt. Dew, Dr. P...whatever it is...is BAD for you! It's not just about what's really in them but really the calories fighting against your weightloss. I too had a hard time giving up soda. Do I still have a full strength soda here or there? Yes, but I have otherwise replaced it with something that is still sweet. Sweetness was my addiction not the caffeine. I replaced it with Crystal Light or an equivalent (Wal-Mart's Great Value brand). Add a pack to a bottle of water and you won't even realize you are drinking so much water. And the best thing is, it's nearly calorie free, 0-10 calorie each pack. That's nothing compared to the 150 in just 12 oz of Pepsi. Then if you buy it by the 20oz bottle...that is 250 calories. However, you say that Diet drinks give you headaches. Do you think it's the artificial sweetener? If so, then Crystal Light may not work either.

To me it's about drinking your daily calorie intake away. It doesn't do anything for you. If you need caffeine, go for black coffee...ZERO CALORIES.

If you think switching to Sweet Tea will save calories, think again. Take McD's Sweet Tea for example. One medium Sweet Tea is 150 calories...same as that can of Pepsi.

We are all here to help you. I truly believe that my recent success has come from just a few things.

1: Eat Breakfast - something rather than nothing, get that metabolism kicking!
2: Drink 80-90 oz of water a day - Black Coffee and Unsweetened Tea count as water)
3: Eat More of less - instead of eating 3 meals a day, eat 5-6 smaller meals each day.
4: Burn more calories then what I intake - your body already burns so many calories each day just to survive, but the more I work out the better. If I know I'm not on a work out day, eat a lil less.
5: DON'T STARVE YOURSELF!

the way i make tea right as of a week ago was 80 calories for 8oz so it will be slightly less than soda and less bloating. I have been decreasing the sugar a little each time I make it since Easter. I hope I can get it to 40 and I will be happy. I do not remember crystal light giving me headaches so I will try it.

7 lbs... thats GREAT!!! Keep it up Hun! Got any before pics to share with us yet?

Great job so far! I can relate to the soda thing. I use to drink a ton of it. I tried to give it up completely, but got frustrated with the headaches and lack of caffeine. I am not a coffee drinker, so that was out the door. As mentioned, the walmart great value sugar free mixes are amazing! Low in calories and taste better then other sugary mixes. I for one love the strawberry banana. Plus they are much cheaper then crystal light.

Well, 7lbs and holding. Been trying different things to see what helps and hurts my weight loss. I hope I can join the Y today.

Hey, I can relate to the pepsi habit. Although I have done very well this time cutting it out. Every once and a while I'll drink some sprite, but it burns now! And drinking a pepsi, takes my breath away, it feels like acid! I was totally addicted to pepsi, but after going say 3 to 4 weeks without it, drinking it really turned me off. about 7 years ago, I lost my first 23 pounds cutting pepsi. Trust me, pepsi was my best friend. If I had a headache and hadn't drank pepsi, I would get one, and then 100% feel better, like, "Ahhhh, I got my pepsi". Put it down, I'm telling you, it will make a world of difference. See ya round the threads! Good luck!

Finally the scale moved again! 11 lbs.! I had an ice cream sandwich for snack last night, I was really craving ice cream so I caved. :(
