Scared out of my mind

damn it-Kara why do you have to sound so reasonable and right:mad: I just want to have my chocolate!! But then again im going to be kicking myself for it when i weigh myself no doubt:D

Okay okay I'll make a concession. No more chocolate unless someone else offers/buys it for me :D I think that's fair no?. I'm usually the one buying the chocolate anyway so this pretty much means no chocolate until ...halloween? *tear*

In the meantime, i will treat myself with..with....wow this is difficult. Okay more thought required here...

Annnyyyway! Thanks for stopping by Kara..and as always i greatly appreciate your advice :)

Glad I could help ... uh ... make you crazy ... uh ... yeah. :)

damn it-Kara why do you have to sound so reasonable and right I just want to have my chocolate!!
Oh I know. Trust me. I go to the grocery store and stand in front of the chips - especially now that football season is starting again and all the stores have buy-one-get-one deals on Lay's chips. And I tell myself "K, you can't buy them because you know you won't stop at one serving." And then I curse myself all the way home because I *know* it's true, but damnit I want chips. :)

In the meantime, i will treat myself with..with....wow this is difficult. Okay more thought required here...
I know!!! Seriously I never realized how often I rewarded myself with food until I told myself I had to stop. So here are a few ideas.

a pedicure or manicure
a bubble bath that night
a new bottle of bubble bath or shower gel (I'm addicted to Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom scent)
a book or magazine

I have categories of rewards that I set for myself - some are small, some are no-cost, and some are big. My 20lb level rewards include an hour massage at the spa. :)

Hi there nightrunner, you sound so much like me! I'm in undergrad school too. I have a lot of the same kind of stuff to deal with... I have bad self control when it comes to food, and I'm lazy and I don't ever want to make an actual meal so I'll just snack on something, thinking, well... LATER I'll make something healthy to eat, but right NOW, I'm hungry! Not so good. I also can never get up in the morning to work out... so far I haven't been able to do it once this week!

What helps me with the temptation to snack on chocolate is to never buy it... so sad:( and also to always eat any meals and snacks on PURPOSE, kind of like I was planning on eating ahead of time. I have set times a day when I eat meals and snacks, so then I get hungry at regular times too-- at 7am, 10am, 12pm, 4pm, 6pm. I skip if I'm not hungry and 10am and 4pm are just for snacks or water. Cool huh? anyway, it works for me.

Just a thought ... it might help if you stop thinking about rewarding yourself with food. :)

And especially don't reward yourself with foods you KNOW are problem foods. You know that chocolate is something you have a problem walking away from - so using it s a reward is just courting another bingey kind of situation.

KaraCooks, wow!! This is the best advise I have heard in the forum. Thank you. I never thought about it that way. I have read about cheat days, and think that when I am good, I will reward myself with chocolate or bakery stuff (my weakness), but when i start rewarding myself I binge. Your advice has helped me think about rewarding in a different way. And I LOOOVE your reward ideas. I really need a manicure, so that's what I'll do this week instead of buying that bar of dark chocolate.

Nightrunner, Yay yay yay!!! for the morning run! Amazing job. Keep it up. :hurray::hurray: And your subjects sound intense. Good luck! I studied Economics and Politics in college, so they were boring and easy. What you are studying sounds really interesting. You are done with your tests or do you have more?

Today was a great day-despite not getting a workout in...got sidetracked :p

Kara, your idea is perfect! I just joined a bookclub with a few girls at university today and being a student i cant afford to be spending money on a new book every month-im all about taking advantage of my library card :D SooOo!! my treat will be to buy a book when i reach a goal :) :) Im so excited!!! Im also really happy to be part of a book club. I watched the jane austin book club movie a few yrs ago and ever since ive wanted to be part of one ...yay!

I'm also at 160! We went out for lunch at a mexican restaurant today with my book-clubers and i had a mediterranean salad (i know mediterranean at a mexican place ?? but everything else seemed loaded with calories) besides i remembered that i had to weigh in today so that helped me stay focused :) But then i spent the calories on a rocky road cookie for dessert :drool5:- and no i didnt buy the cookie. One of my friends bought 1/2 a dozen cookies and shared with the rest of us :cheers2:

Alright so to make up for not working out today, im going to a step class tomorrow and then a tennis game with some girls. Looking forward to tennis! Havent played for - o my 12 yrs!!!

Juni! Thanks for your encouragement! Actually the courses are alright, it was just this one that seemed kind of random. Im not studying right now-3 whole weeks off :p-im helping out with some research with one of my profs, but then classes begin again during the second week of sept.

Thanks for stopping by lindethiel! Planning for meals ahead of time is a great idea! isnt the "not allowed to buy chocolate" so depressing?! i actually know of people who dont like chocolate! I dont understand them at all...

Well the weekend is going well so far. After we played tennis yesterday we went to a coffee pub for something to drink. I wasnt sure what to order since everything looked so good, which meant it had to be bad for me. I ended up getting a morning glory muffin and a FUZE drink. those drink are so damn tasty!!! and i love that they are fortified with a bunch of vitamins because i know i havent been eating as much veggies as i should have been for the past few days.

Anyway when i came home i checked the nutritional info online and the muffin had close to 500 calories!! and here i thought i was going for the healthier choice by forgoing the choc chip muffin (yes i almost caved:D).

Anyway, i tried not to let it bother me too much by telling myself that it was a healthy muffin, and that i had just had a good workout.

Tennis was so much fun!!! I admit im quite rusty and i kept hitting the ball off the side of my racket which made it go in all directions but the intended one, but it felt great to get a workout out in that didnt involve being at the gym. Dont get me wrong i dont mind the gym (it was actually just recently renovated too) but being outside and playing a sport was really quite exhilarating. I dont know why i didnt think to do this earlier. Anyway i hope this can become a habit.

During my step class i felt like i wasnt watching the clock as closely and before i knew it the class was done. I realized afterwards its because i didnt feel so tired and out of breath during the class- endurance improving?? *crossing fingers* I really hope so because i want to start running again. I feel great after a workout at the gym, but i especially love the feeling after a good run! I'm trying to get a run in at least once a week because im still kind of recovering from having shin splints, and i hate that my endurance suffers when i stop running...

Yay!! Taht's the best feeling isn't it? When you don't feel like the class has wrecked you?

That's an excellent way of thinking!! :D Not to say it to enforce not so great eating and justifying it. But you did what you thought would be best and it turned out not to be, but there's nothing you can do but move on and get back on the horse and with thinking like that there's no way you can fail :D

Its good you enjoyed tennis, sports are always fun even if you're not amazing at them :p its like working out without actually working out :p

Keep up the good work! and thanks for stopping by my journal, its nice to have reassurance. I kicked up my weight lifting today because I felt more confident about it :D

Edit: and karas ideas for rewards are excellent as well, to add to them, If I reach my goals I get my monthly cosmo, as well for certain weights i've set for a new piece of clothing. Not just your standard everyday clothing, but something I can sort of splurge on. Nothing terribly expensive either because you still want to lose more weight but :p just a couple more ideas!

Yeah but it totally caught up with me about 3 hours later. I needed to lie down with my feet propped up-it was bad but in a good way :D.

Great ideas Antyoch! Last weekend i bought myself a new pair of workout pants that were a size too small. They where the only size left and they were on clearance...but best of all they are really good quality so i couldnt not buy them. So now my motivation is to continue working out consistently so that i can wear them comfortably :) I cant wait to wear them :jump:

I've been doing pretty well for the last coupe of days. Today i went to an aerobics class and afterwards i was craving something sweet like you wouldn't believe. On my way home i stopped at the store to buy some apples but then i saw that fruitloops were on sale so i caved and bought them....and munched on them for the rest of the drive home...and continued to much on them when i got home and while on the computer :blush5: I know i know!! big no no. its like "sugary cereal? really??? and while on the computer?!? (where you can eat endlessly and not know it!) but you had applesssss!" but i just felt like cheating and i honestly cant bring myself to feel guilty about it. Kind of weird because its out of character for me. Usually id be flipping out right now. im hoping this is a new rational me that doesn't feel like cheating once in a while is the end of the world! ....i wont throw myself down the stairs Kara!! :D That image is really working out for me i love it!

But yeah i realize that this has to be a lifestyle change for me and that i need to be better at self control when it comes to food and portion sizes...definitely something i foresee as being a continual struggle

So anyway ive decided that once i hit 150 im going to buy myself a new book and hopefully by then ill also fit into the pants i got. Then when i hit 140 i'll buy a new workout shirt :) I CANT WAIT!!!!!

...also how much money should i spend on a digital food scale? There are some as low as $20 but i dont want something that will shut down on me within a month

Awesome! :) You're doing so well.

In the grand scheme of things some cereal isn't the end of the world. You didn't let it go into a feeding frenzy and that's great! :)

Oh, I spent about $35 on my food scale and it's been fine for nearly 2 years now. I had to replace the battery after 16 months, but that was no biggie.

That's a nice idea. Investing on workout clothes. I think my next reward to myself will be a good sports bra. I have couple of good ones, but I have been wanting for a while now. So when I hit 129, thas what i am gonna get. Nice reward ideas, you guys!!

I am struggling with my sweet cravings this week too, nightrunner. I had a really really nice dinner of tuna and veggies salad, and then I proceeded on to having some chocolate. Yes, caved in to those dark smooth things that melt into my mouth. It had been calling for me from the fridge for the past two hours, and I finally caved.

All this is also learning experience. So i think when I crave for dark chocolate next, I will stick to one and not four pieces. :)

Perfect plan-satisfying your craving but not going overboard. Dark chocolate is also rich in antioxidants and iron so its not ALL bad :D better than a doughnut :p

I still cant believe i had two this morning! I guess i jinxed myself by patting myself on the back for not having one last night.

So today im going out with some childhood friends for some Thai food. After my doughnut binge this morning i think i will stick to a shrimp salad or something. I have no room for anything else really.

I went to a strength training class early yesterday which was great but by the end of the day i was too sore to move. There was a yoga class in the evening which i didnt think to go to until 7:05. It had started at 7pm. I guess i could have rushed and made it to at least 40 mins of the class but i didnt have the energy to exert too much effort at once so i just read a book.

I've heard different things from different people but does doing a bit of cardio after strength training really decrease muscle soreness?

It really does. And light stretching too. It helps a lot!

Also, ibuprofen and a warm bath if you can. And of course lots of water.

I also have to tell you that it's actually worse the 2nd day ... but then it'll get better after that.

Hang in there! :)

As Kara's already mentioned - performing light aerobic activity will increase blood flow to the muscles and can help with muscle soreness.

I'd caution against the ibuprofen though. Studies have shown that ibuprofen interferes with the process of muscle repair and recovery.

Also: Hot showers, bath with epsom salts, incorporate the RICE technique (rest, ice, compress, elevate) if it's that bad and of course plenty of rest.

I'd caution against the ibuprofen though. Studies have shown that ibuprofen interferes with the process of muscle repair and recovery.

There are studies that show that large doses will impair protein synthesis - so don't go doubling or tripling up on doses, but later studies (most specificially a double blind study in 2008) showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen didn't harm muscle building efforts. a normal adult dose of Advil isn't going to harm anything long term.

Also you have to balance out the benefits/disadvantages. If you hurt so much that you can't workout for 3-4 days after, or you can't sleep, or even if you've really overdone it and can barely move ... then is it more benefit to you to take a couple of doses of Advil and be able to workout on day 3, or to be more sore and wind up going a whole week w/out working out?

And, keeping in mind that most people here are not going for maximum muscle build and hypertrophy, but just for general fitness and weight loss.

Obviously people should read the studies and make their own decisions. For *me*, I feel that a couple of Advil to help alleviate soreness and help me sleep (on those days I overdo it) is a fair trade off for maybe a little less protein synthesis.

YMMV and all that good stuff! :)

Thanks for stopping by core elements and thanks for the info ladies!!

I ended up taking naproxen because my feet started swelling and throbbing a bit. I felt much better on day 3 though so i went back for another bodypump class but did some cardio on the stationary bike for a bit afterwards. It made such a huge difference!! I was totally blown away when the next morning i felt relatively no soreness :hurray:

Anyway we didnt get to play tennis yesterday because it rained on and off all day. Im thinking of trying squash-i figure there isnt an excuse not to play that unless your arm is broken-but first i have to find somewhere that has squash courts.

Hi nightrunner!!

The gym pants are a great idea!! I can't wait until you fit into them. It will be so rewarding! you can do it!

And good job not throwing yourself down the stairs :D

Good information about the cardio after weights too. I was doing cardio after strength but changed it up and went swimming after. Not sure if that counts as cardio :p

It makes me really happy to see you doing good! Keep it up :D

Heeyyy Antyoch :) Thanks for your encouraging words!!

So I weighed myself today and admittedly i wasnt impressed with what the scale had to say. I was up 4 pounds, BUT my clothes fit loosely so i wasnt terribly upset with the scale. I wont lie though a part of me is still a bit sad. I'm trying to drink a lot of water because i know i didnt drink much yesterday and ive been munching on pretzels and fruitloops for the past three days. I just want the next couple of days to be OVER. There has to be a way to control TOM cravings no?!

On a brighter note i played tennis today with my brothers :hurray: The weather was beautiful i regretted not bringing a book to read after playing.

I dont want to sound wishywashy but im really going to try to have a good solid week of healthy eating. I like your idea of a "free day within limits" Kara. I want to say im going to try and do it, but saying I am going to do it sounds more definitive. SooOooOo IM GOING TO DO IT!!!!!!

Today was a no go because i had baklava :drool5: No way in hell i was going to pass that up. But i only had two small pieces and i didnt go over my calories for the day.

So! My free day will be monday the 31st. PRAY FOR ME!
