Scared of the scale

Pot Luck

It was good. Real good. I ate at around 3 this afternoon, and I'm still full. I haven't had such good food since leaving home. Ok, allow me a bit of food porn here folks. There was baked chicken, red velvet cake, brownies, rice and beans, yams, baked beans, fried fish, baked macaroni and it just kept on going. I was in food heaven. I had a sample of everything and you know what the best part of it was....I didn't overeat and I managed to stay within my alloted calories for the day. Man, but such decadance can only happen once in a while. It's just wonderful that I've managed to eat out all through out this weekend and not go overboard on my food. Alright, that's it for the night. I'll most likely be missing for the rest of the week, but I'll be around to update for the 2lbs a month challenge. Other than that, I'm going to be spending a lot of time studying and catching up on homework. Ok then people, I'm wishing everyone a wonderful week.

You have a wonderful week too, girl. Glad to hear you enjoyed the pot luck and managed to stay in your calorie range! The food sounds heavenly.

Welcome back

Hey everyone, I'm back. I kinda had to put my self in seclusion for a while. I've been a bit depressed lately, and I was trying to figure things out. My depression hasn't been helped by my piss poor eating habits. Lots of exams, papers, tons of homework and the general pressure to graduate combined with too little sleep was enough to send me over the edge and start living and eating like a true college student. Since last week, I've had every bad thing I could imagine; cakes, pizza, ice cream, cookies...the works. Fortunately for me, I haven't gained any substantial weight. I still feel as though I'm in a bit of a fog.

But the good news is that I'm beginning to feel much better, still depressed but not as much as I've been these past 2 weeks. I'm starting back on the healthy lifestyle wagon today (it's 2:38 in the morning over here) so I'll be hitting up the gym and will go back to counting my calories. Oh, I'm also the proud new owner of my very own scale. I finally caved in and bought one. So now I can once again be an active member in the April challenge. I think that's about all. I don't have that much to say, and being that I've gotten a total of 15hrs of sleep in these last 4 days, I'm going to head off to bed.

Thanks Juliette. We'll see if I'm still happy with the scale once I start weighing in again.:D

Hi FP! Where have you been? I haven;t been around in your thread for a long time! What's going on? *curious*
I been around. But I was updating my diary as much as I was before. I'm back now and will be updating you on my mudane life once more.

Haha, yeah. My parents really didn't work too hard in trying to figure that one out. Boy do I wish I were having that skinny feeling this morning. I just feel overly full

Good to have you back! Sorry to hear that you've been feeling down. I hope that will change very soon. Don't forget that we're always here to take care of you when you need us. :) Congrats on your new scale. Hopefully she's a kind scale that you won't want to beat up. :p

This week is just too hectic and yesterday after writing out my to do list, I almost felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack. There was just so much that needed to get done by today and you know what I did, I went to bed. I slept for 10 hours and it was good. I think the reason my mood has been so up and down lately is because I haven't been sleeping properly at all. Hopefully, once this week ends, I'll have caught up on all of my work and will be back in the groove of things.

Almost back to normal

Things are still really busy. But here's how everything has been going so far.

I'm thinking and hoping that by tomorrow, I'll be officially caught up on my work.

I'm starting phase 2 of my revamped diet tomorrow. I've hit a plateau and for the past 3 weeks, have been gaining and losing the same 5lbs.

I presented my thesis today at the Northeastern Anthropological Association Conference.

My professor and a couple of other professors want me to apply for a Fullbright Scholarship::(honestly, I don't think I'm smart enough to get it.)::

Still slightly depressed, I think it may be seasonal. The sun was out and shining bright today, and my mood picked up considerably.

I'm finally having a meeting with the head of the art department to discuss the situation concerning my photography professor.

And I believe that's it. Oh wait, I got a hair cut. It's cute and I like it a lot. Bye, bye long hair; hello short and sassy!

Ooo short and sassy! You know what that means...pictures :D

And if your professors think you should apply then APPLY!!
:)

I agree! Apply for that scholarship! It really can't hurt to just apply. If you don't get it, no harm done... and if you do, then that's wonderful!
I want to see pics of this new sassy haircut. :) I'm quite a lover of short, sassy hair.

Ah so tired today. But it's really beautiful out. The sun is shining and I'm in a real good mood. I've got a lot to get done and then I'm headed off to the gym. I haven't been there in almost a week!!! Crazy, but I miss going there and working out and feeling the burn. Who would have pegged me as being the gym rat. I know I certainly wouldn't. I was reading an article today, and it was listing the worst exercises for your diet and do you know what was listed as number 1...swimming. Apparently, swimming makes you wicked hungry and if your on a calorie restrictive diet, that can be bad news. I'm not too sure about that one. I like swimming and it helps change up my work out routine, so I'll take these findings with a grain of salt. Uh with that said, I'm off to go and take my exit interview (goody I get to find out just how much in debt I really am) and then it's gym time, after that heading off to the darkroom to go and develop some pictures and finally going to try and finish up some other assignments.

I never knew that about swimming! I always assumed it was a great exercise choice. But like you said, you gotta take that stuff with a grain of salt. I hope your workout was great yesterday. I also hope the news about your debt wasn't too astonishing. lol I hate debt!!!!

Oh man, I just got back from a stop domestic violence and sexual assault rally. It was so emotional, people were crying all over the place and I was weeping a little too but only because whenever I see someone crying, my eyes automatically fill up with tears. All and all, it was good experience. I've taken part in this particular rally before and each year, you just get to see what abuse can do to a person. Alright, on to happier news:

The exit interview was eye opening to say the least. I'm not too bad when it comes to my college debt load, but it could be better. Other than that, I had a fantastic day. I spoke to the head of the art department about the issues I've been having with my professor, and I felt as though things would actually be changing from now on. Then, I went to the gym, did some nice weight training and just felt like I was being productive and heading back towards the right direction. I've stuck within my calorie range, and I haven't had a bad snack in the last 16 hours. I'm really feeling good about things right now.

I'm also considering increasing my weight training session and decreasing the amount of cardio I do. I'm thinking of going from doing resistance training every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to doing it on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Then, instead of doing cardio on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, I'd only be doing it on Tuesday and Thursday. For me, I've notice that I burn more fat doing resistance training than I do with just focusing on cardio. Hmmm, what do you guys think?

Ye Olde School

Haha, I just got back from a jousting tournament held at my school's Renissance fair. Fun times. This was actually someone's senior thesis presentation and since she's a performing arts major, her idea was to add a joust/play to the fair. Good times all around. Took a bunch of out there photos with my friend. I'm dressed as a wench, and she's a knight. I had lots of fun. As promised, here are the new pics of my hair cut. I like it a lot. I also uploaded a photo of me with longer hair.

Breakfast
0.5 grapefruit
1 bowl special k w/1% milk

Lunch
Hamburger w/ spinach on bun and ketchup

Dinner
Salad
1/2 cup yellow sweet corn
hamburger w/spinach on bun and ketchup

Snack
2 brownies: haha, yeah I'm bad.

Total calories: 1590 calories. Not too shabby if I do say so myself.

Oh, I've defeated my plateau. I lost 2lbs!!!! Go me. I'm feeling much better. Now all that's left is for me to clean my room and I'll be back on track.

Food for thought: Healthy Soda?

Soda is a multi-billion dollar industry in this country, but despite huge sales, its image has suffered in recent years. Diet offerings have been plagued by artificial sweetener woes—from myths of brain tumors to some legitimate health concerns. And the versions sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup have fared no better. In a report issued in 1998, the nutrition advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest famously dubbed soda “liquid candy.” Subsequently, protests by parents and nutrition advocates have lobbied to get soda machines banned from high-school cafeterias, and fast-food chains like McDonald’s have expanded their drink options to include healthier choices like bottled water or milk.

So what’s a soda manufacturer to do in order to stay in the game? Coke and Pepsi seem to think the answer lies in adding vitamins to soft drinks—turning your fizzy afternoon indulgence into a “health” food. This month, Coke is set to launch Diet Coke Plus, a zero-calorie cola with a sprinkling of nutrients mixed in. According to the company, one 8-ounce serving of the soda will provide 15 percent of the daily value (DV) of niacin, vitamins B6 and B12, and 10 percent of the DV for zinc and magnesium. And in the fall, Pepsi will roll out Tava, a line of zero-calorie sparkling beverages in flavors like Tropical Berry Blend and Passion Fruit Lime. Each 8-ounce serving of Tava will deliver 10 percent of the DV of vitamins B3, B6 and E.

“The biggest thing in every industry right now is health and wellness,” says Lynn Dornblaser, director of Mintel Custom Solutions, a market research firm. “Even companies that never had that as a primary focus are now trying to adapt their product lines to fit what’s important today.”

But can a soda ever really make the leap from junk food to health food? “Probably it’s just marketing,” says Kristine Clark, director of sports nutrition at Penn State University and a registered dietitian. The small amounts of nutrients in such sodas probably aren’t enough to make much difference in the average American diet. “Let’s hope no one is using these products to meet their nutritional needs,” says Clark.

The ever-growing category of natural sodas has been promoting health claims for several years, and has lured drinkers away from more conventional carbonated beverages or turned the health conscious into first-time soda drinkers. Brands like Izze, Santa Cruz Organics and Blue Sky contain real fruit juice, organic sugar as well as, in some case, vitamins. “The success of natural sodas—and especially of fortified bottled waters—may have spurred the more traditional companies to move in a similar direction,” says Dornblaser.

While trend-watchers speculate on whether or not consumers will swallow the health claims of Coke’s and Pepsi’s new sodas, nutritionists remain sanguine. “If you’re drinking these because of their nutrients, that’s not a valid reason, but if you’re going to be drinking soda anyway, you’re at least getting something extra,” says Clark. “Just
