Scared of the scale

I suggest that everyone does something like that. It's the best thing ever. I felt so empowered by her and the message that she was giving...."never let anyone or yourself tell you that you can't achieve something." And I was like, yes. I can do this; lose the weight and feel great.

Today was an alright day. My mom called me and told me that she had just had surgery to remove a weird growth that appeared on her neck about a month ago. They're going to perform a biopsy and I'm hoping and praying that it's nothing serious. She called to ask me to come home, so I'm getting on the first bus and heading back to be with my family. I've written to my professors and told them what's up; the only one of them that I'm not too certain about is my photography professor who seems to have no soul; harsh I know, but she can be unintentionally cruel to her students. I'm not too worried about her though. I'm more concerned about my mom.

After getting that bit of news, I was kinda living in a daze for the last couple of hours, but I'm feeling much better. Just got back from the longest session of karaoke ever and it really helped to take my mind off my mom. I know she wouldn't want me to worry myself to death about something that in all likelihood could amount to nothing. Working out today also relieved a bit of the tension. I just ran my life away. I've got a couple of things to do tomorrow, then I'm packing, and then I'm going home.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I hope everything will be perfectly fine. Have a safe trip on the bus and take it easy. Let us know how it all goes.

Thanks for the concern guys. My mom is doing well. She sounded good, a bit tired when I last spoke with her. I'm still worried about her cause my mom is the type of person that doesn't get sick, and when she does my house shuts down. We get a little lost without her. I remember when she went on a much needed vacation leaving myself, brothers and my dad to fend for ourselves; we nearly starved...ok that's an exaggeration, but we did end up eating out everyday for the three weeks she was on vacation with her sister.

I've also got the world's worst case of acid reflux. How is it that at 22 I suffer from something like this? I've changed my diet and I'm exercising regularly...it's probably stress related. I gotta learn to relax. I'm going to try and take my own advice. Ok, onto less depressing news. It's been almost 2 weeks since I last stepped foot on a scale. I'm proud of that because I've been tempted to hop on one. But I won't, not until I get home. So far, I've been relying on my clothes to help determine my progress and according to my clothes, I'm losing weight or if I'm not losing weight, at least toning up.

I've also been relying on pictures. Right now, I can't really see the difference. To me, I still look the same, but I guess I'll find out on Wednesday when I finally head on home. Food wise, I've been doing really well at sticking to the suggested calorie intake that sparkpeople set up for me. Using sparkpeople has really been easy for me, and it's given me new ways of making my crappy dining hall food a lot better tasting. Today, I had a really nice meal especially dinner. Here's how it went.

Breakfast
2 pancakes w/ 1tbs syrup - 207 calories
1 cup no fat milk - 86 calories
1 grapefruit - 46 calories

Lunch
1 BLT sandwich on a bagel - 286 calories

Dinner
2 oz flank steak served w/ green peppers, onions, mozarella and ranch dressing wrapped in a flour tortilla - 380 calories

Snacks
1/2 banana - 54 calories
1/2 bagel w/ 1 tbs honey - 110 calories
1 medium sized apple - 81 calories

wow hope your mum is ok, scarey stuff.

My family arnt so close, if my mother got sick or rang saying she was we would proabably assume that she was faking it to get attention :O
Though we would go over anyway 'just in case' kinda thing because even if shes faking it or exaduating it she would always bring up 'WHEN I WAS DIEING YOU NEVER CAME TO VISIT!' thing :)

LOL @ Wishes.

Your food sounds great. I still can't believe you can eat so well when you rely on the school dining hall. You guys must have a really good dining hall, because most just offer crap all the time. I hope you get some great news when you get on the scale at home!

Mmmm ... Pancakes

Hi Funky; I see you had pancakes for breakfast and I love pancakes. I'm going to find a recipe for whole wheat pancakes and get some low-fat syrup. Yum!

I know. They're so good. I could never imagine giving them up. Ooo, whole wheat pancakes. That sounds tasty. I'm basically eating regular old pancakes, but they're significantly smaller than what I used to scarf down. They're about 2 inches in diameter and having 4 of them adds up to roughly 148 calories.

Excellent news all. My mom is doing absolutely fantastic. The mass that they removed from her neck was nothing at all. Just "lost skin cells" as the doctor put it that were filled with fluid. I still haven't headed home yet, but my brother called and told me that everything was alright and that I should relax. So no worries. Now that's a load off my mind. I'm a bit frazzeled as midterms are coming up, so I've been on the grind for the past few days. I've got 2 exams to get ready for and then I'm free and can head on home without thinking about all of the school work I'm going to have to do.

Man, I wish graduation would just hurry up and get here already. Just 2 more months and then I'm out of undergrad. Hopefully by then, I would have lost 20lbs. Food wise, I didn't hit some of the goals I set for myself. I'm back to undereating again, and not getting in enough water. But I was just so busy today, that I kinda ran out of time to eat. I was coming and going; so basically, I was eating on the run. When I logged my food into spark people and fitday, I didn't even make 1,300 calories. Oh well, tomorrow is another day and I'll be making an effort to get in all of my calories.

Breakfast
1/2 grapefruit - 46 calories
bowl of Cream of wheat w/honey - 180 calories
1 serving egg white - 17 calories
1 cup non fat milk - 86 calories

Lunch
BLT on whole wheat bread - 203 calories

Dinner
Spaghetti and Meatballs served w/ Marinara sauce - 390 calories
side of green beans - 10 calories

Snack
1 caramel rice cake - 80 calories
1/2 a Nabisco 100 calorie pack of Ritz chips - 50 calories
1 medium banana - 109 calories

Wow, your food sounds so delicious!

It's wonderful that your Mom is doing well! I'm so glad to hear it.

Sweet Victory!!!!

So I'm finally home. Ya!!! Well as for my family noticing that I had lost weight, it didn't quite happen like I imagined it. My brothers being brothers didn't notice anything hahaha. I shouldn't have expected too much from them. But once I told them that I had been losing weight, my older brother said that he did notice a difference especially in my cheeks. Bless his heart, he tried to give my baby brother the heads up about my weight loss, but he didn't catch on and so didn't say anything to me either. He was like, oh, I never saw you as fat anyway so I didn't think that you needed to lose weight :D . I love my brothers even when they're totally oblivious, they know how to make me feel good.

My parents still haven't seen me. They were in Long Island looking at new cars to buy during a snow storm. I got tired of waiting up for them, so I went to bed. They're asleep right now and I'm sorely tempted to wake them up and just talk to them, especially my dad since I haven't seen him in over 4 months. But the biggest news of all today is that I had my official weigh in and I'm down a whopping 5lbs!!! The last time I weighed in was on Feb. 24th and I was 190lbs; 22 days later, I'm 185. I'm still amazed that I've stuck with this thing so long, and that I'm actually seeing results. I'm just so motivated to keep up with eating right and exercising. The only minus is that at home I have no exercise equipment. So I brought my one workout video with me, and I'm relying on finding different exercises posted on the web to supplement my program.

My brother suggested that I sneak into the gym at his school. I'm thinking I'll take him up on the offer. The tricky thing is getting in, but he said that if I leave early enough, I should be able to come in with the early morning crowd and bypass security all together. Then I just have to hang around for a few hours until the class that meets in the gym is over, and then I can use the equipment. I'm excited about that because they've got other workout stuff that my school doesn't have and I'm pumped about using them and getting a good work out.

Thanks for the well wishes sunny. I'm really happy that she's feeling better also. The only thing now is that she'll be well enough to keep nagging me :D . Oh well, she's a mother and that's what they do. As for the meal plan, I've got spark people to thank for that. They give me ideas about what to eat, and then I go ahead and tweak the suggestions a bit until I find what I really like eating. It's been working, and I haven't felt any cravings at all.

Glad your mom's OK. Sneaking into the gym -- go for it! My daughter used to make friends with the guys at the door at LA Fitness, Gold's, and 24 Hour. I never saw anyone with so many "2 Week Passes." She went for about 6 months without paying a dime.

Family members are often clueless about your struggles. My parents used to nag me all the time about my weight. We only saw each other on Christmas. One year, I actually had lost 40 pounds. I looked totally different. But they didn't even mention it.

Parents are sometimes the last people you should let in your "support group."

Haha, yeah. The sneaking into the gym should be fun. But my mom just told me that I can use the gym over at her office. She's a cop, so that'll be fun. They've gotta have some nice high class equipment over there. My parents are great. They're being real supportive, and they were making this big deal about my having lost weight. The funny thing is that they're also losing weight too. So I was the one that was shocked just like they were. My mom has lost around 20lbs so far and she just needs to lose 10 more pounds to be at her goal of 200. My dad has also lost weight and is at 305lbs. Mostly it's muscle, but the great thing is that his cholesterol and blood pressure have gone down a lot as well. I'm so proud of everyone in my family for the strides that we've been making against the pudge.

I'm so glad to hear about your mom :D enjoy it at home. and wake your dad up...i'm sure he wouldn't mind hehe

have a wonderful weekend :D

St. Patrick's Day

Wow, yesterday had to have been the most fun that I've had in a few months. I met up with some college friends, and we went out to eat (play ominous music here). It wasn't all that bad because we ended up at this vegetarian Chinese food place over in Chinatown. We got a lot of appetizers, I made sure to stay away from the spring rolls since they're fried, but I did try a bit of the fried tofu(I ate the tofu on the inside, and avoided the fried outside)...didn't like it. They also had the egg plant, and I didn't like that either. Then I tried the shark fin rice congee. That was delicious and I've never eaten shark before.

I mainly ate portions of the bbq "meat" and I had lots of veggie dumplings. I don't know how many calories I ate yesterday at the restaurant, and I'm too exhausted to even attempt to find out their calorie content. All I know is that after eating all of that and going home to have a small cup of Special K red berries w/ whole milk, I was a bit leery about eating anymore stuff. Big mistake. Partying with my friends on somewhat of an empty stomach leads to some funny events. I had 4 beers, and I was gone. Let's just say that my night ended with me discovering my inner go-go dancer. I'm still paying for the fun. I haven't really eaten much today. I managed to get in 2 pieces of whole wheat toast w/ 2 tsp of jam. Then had about 4 bites of my oatmeal, before promptly passing out and waking up 5 hours later.

I decided to indulge a bit in my mom's cooking. I had some Nigerian food, but it was mainly ground cassava (doesn't have much nutritional value) but it fills you up nicely. I'm good right now. I'll probably have a banana or something like that later. I'm just really sleepy. All and all, my St. Patrick's Day was really good. I wouldn't change a thing, even if I feel like I licked the pavement.

So I thought I'd post this for you guys since I happen to read a lot of people's diaries and they write about how they feel badly for eating out at a restaurant and ordering something that they thought was bad for them. I found this stuff on a few different webpages, but I thought it would be fun to share so that the next time you decide to eat out, you can at least know what to order. I think I'll make this a weekly thing, and post up different meal options for you to try at your favorite restaurants.

What to eat when you're eating Chinese

appetizers
Be careful of the tempting fried noodles that sit on the table while you wait for your meal — it is easy to munch on these without giving it any thought and then, before you know it, you’ve packed on extra calories!

1 eggroll - 300 to 350 calories

1 mini spring roll - 165 calories

1 vegetable dumpling (steamed) - 25 calories

Hot and Sour or Wonton Soup (1 cup) - 110 calories

What to order: When it comes to appetizers, a good choice is to stick with soups like hot and sour or wonton soup, which are lower in calories and fat than many other appetizer alternatives. Steamed spring rolls or dumplings are better choices than egg rolls because they are not fried, saving you calories and fat. Choose steamed vegetarian spring rolls or dumplings instead of those stuffed with meat, which can save you approximately 50 calories per roll/dumpling.

Drinks
Make sure to drink lots of water (alone and in addition to tea, soda or an alcoholic beverage) since Chinese food can be high in sodium, causing dehydration and bloating.

Soft Drink (12 oz.) - 150 calories

Sake (3 oz.) - 115 calories

Hot Tea - 0 calories

Diet Soft Drink - 0 calories

What to order: Take advantage of no-calorie hot tea, a Chinese staple that has added health benefits. As always, water and diet sodas are good, no-calorie choices. Calories from alcoholic beverages like Sake, beer or wine can add up quickly so limit these choices.

Main Entrees
Chinese food is plentiful in nutritious, vitamin-packed vegetables so take advantage of the wide assortment available. Fill up on steamed veggies and leaner meats that are not fried or “swimming” in sauce. You can always request the sauce “on the side.”

Crispy Fried Chicken (1 cup) - 485 calories

Beef Chow Mein (1 cup) - 420 calories

Sweet and Sour Pork (1 cup) - 316 calories

Chicken and Broccoli (1 cup) - 280 calories

What to order: Good, lower-calorie choices include: steamed, broiled or roasted chicken, beef, pork or shrimp Chow Mein, Chop Suey, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and of course, steamed veggies. Anything described as crispy, coated, marinated, twice-cooked or battered suggests higher calorie and fat contents. Some restaurants even have a light menu which features steamed chicken, shrimp or fish with steamed vegetables, which will always be your best bet.

Sides and Desserts
It’s hard to imagine eating a Chinese meal that doesn’t include rice. However, orders of rice are usually extremely large so make sure to be mindful of portion control.

Fried rice (1 cup) - 235 to 370 calories

White rice (1 cup) - 150 calories

Fortune Cookie - 25 calories

What to order: Fried rice is basically white rice with added soy sauce and fried vegetables and eggs. Therefore, it is higher in fat and sodium. Stick with white rice and if that seems a little boring, add your own flavorful sauces that are low in fat (like sweet n’ sour, duck or plum sauce) to give it a little extra kick! Adding steamed mixed vegetables that are rich in fiber will help fill you up as well. Dessert is simple-- a fortune cookie is the perfect sweet ending to your meal, and they’re only about 25 calories each.

Here’s just one example of how you can make lighter choices (and how those choices can really make a difference) at your favorite Chinese restaurant:

"Lighter" Version

Chicken with Broccoli (1 cup) - 280 calories

White Rice (1 cup) - 150 calories

1 Mini Spring Roll - 165 calories

Hot tea/diet soda/ water - 0 calories

Total calories consumed for this meal plan - 595 calories

Full Calorie Version

Crispy Fried Chicken - 485 calories

Fried Rice (1 cup) 235 to 370 calories

1 egg roll - 300 to 350 calories

Sake (3 oz) - 115 calories

Total calories for this meal option - 1135 to 1320 calories

See, so you can have a healthier option when it comes to eating Chinese food. Now you know a bit of the facts so that you won't have to feel guilty if you decide to indulge a bit.

Cool! Thanks for the Chinese food tips! I love Chinese food. I try to stay away from the deep fried stuff, but every now and then I just have to indulge. My favorite thing is beef & brocolli though. I guess that would be about equivalent in calories to the chicken & brocolli? I also love chicken fried rice and shrimp fried rice. I always end up eating too much rice when I have Chinese. But I will definitely use your tips next time I eat it!
