That's a blow that your knee is playing up Sarah. Hope it mends fast! Cheers, xo Cate

Sometimes taking a break is the most beneficial thing that you can do to heal. Glad you are able to recognize that before you risk hurting it even more, yet still find a way to stay active!

Also, I love that goal of incorporating the magic three at every meal. Kind of makes me want to do something similar with the way I eat. Will have to think about it!

Hope the rest of your day is going well!

~Camila~

Hey Sarah - so spring is trying there eh?... we've had a "revisit" winter week here... LOts of fresh snow-sheesh... am glad for you - nicer outside means better conditions for outside training..

Soory to hear about your knee and tendonitis , you are wise to be easing-up a bit on your training, until the injury settles, and your chinese-therapy of massage & cupping sounds interesting , it should improve circulation, which usually speeds healing . Polka-dot legs does sound funny though ;)

Your Magic-3 plan sounds good, how many calories daily are you finding work for you to maintain ?... I know you are very active with your training , and that everyone is different in their calorie balance, but am curious...

Good work on your calories and health-eats, and the eliptical and steps - I am sure you will be up to that Marathon training again soon , but so wise to let your injury heal first, so it does not become a permanent problem.

cheers Sarah,
maryann

Hey y'all,
It's Thursday and I'm on my way to another chinese dinner out...I'm thinking this is going to happen a lot over the next 6 months as we start up the plant...oh we'll, I'll get through it!

The good news is my knee seems to be better! 2 weeks not running and the cupping treatment seems to have helped a lot. I plan on a 10k on Saturday to see how it goes.

Maryann, my calorie count goal is 1600/day. I'm 5'7 and you have seen my exercise deal. My guess is I'm under counting my calories, so I'm thinking I'm at 1700 or so/day except on the days where I have the long training runs then I'm well over 2200.

Well, take care ya'll, and let's all make good choices!

Sarah

Hey Sarah - thx for sharing your cals amount.
.. I am 5'2" and the niddk model recommends 1,300cals/day + 60mins. moderate walking for me to lose 1lb./week .... so that sounds reasonable when compared to your 1,600 .... as we are close to same age... ;)

Good luck with the dinners out... you are a pro at healthy food choices by now gal !

Glad to hear the knee is better , good luck for the 10K this weekend !

cheers,
maryann :hat:

Sarah, I am so glad you knee is better!! :)
I have so much admiration for all runners!! 10 k sounds cool! I d be happy to walk that - or the double...but no running for me.

It's Saturday, and I've knocked out a 15k run..knee a little sore at first, but then got better...felt OK at the end and even better after a nice warm bath! It's still cold here...the river I run beside is still frozen enough to have ice skaters and ice fishing on it...sure will be glad when spring gets here!
We will go this afternoon to a possible new place to live here in Shenyang..a new hotel and pretty nice. We're going to spend a night there to see if we really like it, like the food etc. the bummer is the apartment doesn't have much of a kitchen...my husband says he thinks he can manage with a crock pot, rice cooker and vegetable steamer...and if he can get the chef at the hotel (who we know, and who used to be the chef at our currant hotel) to cook us seafood and steaks to order we'll be ok! We also give up a spare bedroom, but, the living room and bedroom are much bigger than what we have now, and it's still got that new place smell with updated furnishings. We havn't made up our minds at 100% yet..we'll see what a night, noise, breakfast food are really like, then we have some facts to make a decision. They also have a really nice fitness center and pool at this place...funny how criteria to pick out an apartment have changed since I have change my lifestyle!
I am also going back to the massage place this afternoon..,not sure if I 'll get the cupping again, but I did like the massage last time..and who know, maybe the cupping did the trick on the knee!

Maryann, you might consider the old fat2fit tools to get your target calorie for maintaining your weight...that's how I picked the 1600/day target. It seems to be something I can maintain and slowly lose with, and not feel deprived!
Justina, I was a runner a loooong time ago(in high school), and have done some all my life since then...except when I was at my biggest... Last fall, after seeing some of our friends on here (Kate) was running, it gave me the courage to try again...so I started out really slow and really small distances, and slowly worked my way up to what I'm doing now (training for the Great Wall Marathon)...after that, my intention is to keep running and doing the occasional race, but this is my last full marathon...it takes too much time and too hard on my knees! You can do it too...you might check out jeffgalloway.com. He has some great run/walk methods to help runners and wannabe runners, and I am using his method to train up for this marathon!

Cory, thanks for your encouragement! The race is on 1st of May...I'll be glad to have this one behind me! I have some co-workers doing it too, so we can all be stiff together!

Good choices to Ll!

Sarah

Hi Sarah, I've not been around for a while but catchign up on diaries now - wow the 100lbs mark, that really is HUGE :) What a tremendous journey and how worth it! Glad to hear the knee is on the mend, I think you'd really feel it after 15k if it wasn't much better. Keep it up!
Jay

Well, the night in the new hotel went well...we've made our decision to move...now to get the details worked out..it will likely be about a month from now as that is when our contract is over here at this hotel. The new hotel has a very nice fitness center and nice shower facilities where I think I can just take my work clothes there, shower up and go straight to breakfast...that will save me some time (always looking for that, as it takes me about an hour to get to the new plant location, which I moved to this past week. I'm sure it will take me less time if I leave earlier). The breakfast was really good, and I had buttered California mix veggies, 2 fried eggs, 3 slices of bacon and some sauteed kale, then finished by a small plain yogurt and walnuts...lots to eat, but so good!

I also got a massage yesterday...started with my feet...and ended with my back. I had a little lower back pain yesterday...well, by the time this woman finished with me, I am really sore today...not achy sore, muscle sore...and she wants me to come back next weekend to do more...she evidently thinks (knows) I need it. It's not expensive and I'm sure she knows what she's doing...but wow, what a work out! Definitly didn't walk out of there feeling like a wet noodle...and I'm hoping this will help me in the long runs! She told me she thinks I have a small broken bone in my left foot right there in the arch where it hurts. I think she's right, but I'm still in denial. I don't want to give up on the marathon now! I did the 5 min run, 1 min walk routine in doing the 5k yesterday..and today (other than the back massage pain), I feel fine! So happy about that!
Well, let's all have a great week ahead and make healthy choices!

Sarah

Massage - i m sooo jealous!! Good for you.
How is the new hotel working out? It sounds like a nice place - did you get to talk to the chef?

You have a small broken bone? & You are still running? Could you cause damage to your foot? Are you gonna have it checked out? I hope all goes well!!!

Have a great week Sarah! Take care!

Well, it's Wednesday evening and I'm over the hump...going to France this weekend for a business trip and I'm actually looking forward to it. It will be my last trip for while as I'll be starting up this plant full time after that!

Justina & Cory...I have started soaking my feet every night in Epsom Salts (full of magnesium) and the foot is feeling good...so I don't think I have a broken bone after all. I'll be running again this weekend, then getting a massage and I'm pretty sure I'll be worked over again! Thanks so much for your concerns...I'm bumbling forward towards the Great Wall!

Eating wise, I'm doing OK...my dear husband is steaming vegetables and they are yummy...less additives than on the Chinese ones I have been getting at the restaurant. I'm also focusing on eating the balanced meals of 3...1 (vegetable or fruit carbs), 1 (meat or dairy protein) 1 (healthy fat). I'm at the time in my life where I'm having hot flashes...and I've read that hot flashes are caused by an imbalance in blood sugars, so I'm really trying to not have high sugar/carb surges...so far, not sure I'm seeing the immediate results, but I'm cutting back on high sugar fruits like bananas for a little while (except when I take a long run!).

Great choices to all!

Sarah

Hey Sarah .... mmmmm....Paris.... Paris in spring-time... U are so lucky....say Hi to the Eiffel tower for me eh?... hope U enjoy your weekend there....a nice break from your Shenyang winter....

...the steamed-veg sound yummy....I am trying to get more veggies in everyday too.... a good healthy goal...per Justina's web-site link - UMich food pyramid, they have research showing "threshold" of minimum 7 servings fruit/veg daily shows reduced illness/chronic disease...

.... I have battled with "hormone" shifts last couple years too.... this past couple-months, I have been having a tablespoonful of groud flax-seed mixed in my yogurt, I bought it for healthy fibre& omega-3 fat source , but am finding I don't get my "hot spells" as often now, I looked it up, apparently flax-seed has plant phytoestrogens, which help to block our natural estrogen-receptors, reduce "flares" of our natural estrogens...

Glad to hear your foot is better, happy Great-wall training, only 1 month to the race... woo hoo !

cheers gal,
maryann :)

Paris this weekend - sounds fab!!! Have a safe flight!!!

I am happy that your foot is not broken & you are making the right food choices. You rock :D

I want to go to Paris!...and a husband who makes me steamed veggies!!! You are living the life ;)

Seriously though, glad to hear your foot is doing better! Hope you are able to at least enjoy Paris apart from your work. Happy Wednesday to you!

~Camila~

I'm glad it's not a broken bone. The feet can be SO tricky. And if they get hurt it makes so many forms of exercise nearly impossible.

Greetings all and Happy Easter! He is Risen, he has Risen indeed!

It's Saturday night and I had a long run today (31k) and I think that is my last long run before the big day...I'm 1 month out and now is the time to start scaling back...so I'll still do the steps and shorter runs, and of course the elliptical etc...but long runs are done! Hooray...so my foot says! I did get the full body massage today..not nearly as rough as the one last weekend...she must be getting some of those places worked out!

I go to Paris tomorrow...and yes, it should be OK..I've seen on the internet it's a little cold there, so I'll be wearing some cold weather clothing and running clothes (gotta love running down the Champs Elysees early in the morning before the tourists and Parisians are there!) I'm mostly packed...which for me is the part I dislike the most. My husband is not going with me...he's been to Paris several times... been there, done that kind of trip for him, so he is working on moving us to our new hotel...not sure I mentioned that...we are moving..still here in the center of the city in Shenyang, but to a brand new hotel. Nicer rooms but really small kitchen..hubby says he can manage OK, so we've officially given notice here at our current hotel. Kind of excited about that!

Maryann, Justina, Cate, Cory and Camila...thanks so much for always be here in my diary! It's great to always see your posts! Camila, I do have a great husband and a good living arrangement right now, and yes, life as an 'expat' is OK most of the time...but trust me when I say it's not all 'living the life'...there's alot of long days, endless emails and weekends spent doing stuff that is not so glamerous...of course I don't write about that stuff!

Food wise, I'm doing OK. we had a big Chinese lunch/dinner combo today after the massage...lots of veggies and sweet and sour pork and the chinese dumplings. All of that really hit the spot for me today..I think I'm turning Chinese!

Happy Easter to all, and keep making those good choices...don't over do it and especially have retraint on the chocolate...unless is like 70% cocoa! Eat today what you won't regret tomorrow!

Good choices to all,

Sarah
