Salad for Sara

I'm a newbie from Germany (American in Germany that is...) and joined this forum in the hope that I will find some support. My DH (we shall call him M) is a doctor for the US Army and is in Iraq for at least five more months. I want to slim down while he is gone and surprise him when he comes back. Don't get me wrong, I 'm doing this for me--I turn 40 in August--and I want to go to Paris for my birthday and I DO NOT want to feel frumpy and plump in Paris!! So, I am embarking on a serious journey in the right direction. I've done all the prep-work, I've measured myself, weighed myself, set a calorie range of 1500-1700 calories per day, and an exercise/eating regimen. I have goals which don't seem too unrealistic. I weigh 177 pounds this morning, my ultimate goal is 135, but for the purposes of this "plan" I have set an intermediate goal of 142, this means that in order to weigh 142 by August 23 (my birthday) I will have to lose 1 pound every five days.

Today is day one, and I hope that I will be writing in my diary every day. I will be using Fitday to track my calories, and I WILL stick with it this time--it seems like there is always something getting in the way of my "diet". Maybe it is denial, maybe simply laziness, maybe the fact that I eat emotionally and I am husbandless at the moment has something to do with it...I know I am a stress eater--I just need to become a stress water drinker instead. OK, so this is day one! Wish me luck! --S

welcome to the site and to your diary...

there's always going to be "something" to get in the way - as long as you know what your calorie range is for the day - you can make that something work within your day...

good luck - and turning 40 isn't that bad - 30 was far more traumatic :) and paris on your birthday sounds like a great treat :)

Day One!

Thank you all for your kind welcome!
I am doing well today--very motivated!! Today I work, and at the moment have nothing really all that great to take to work for food. If I had prepared in advance (big procrastinator here) I would have some dish to take along with salad for lunch, but, since I am running late, and disorganized I am taking: 1.5 cups of red grapes, 4 ounces of part skim, low moisture, mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup almonds--I know it looks like a weird bunch of food--but it will fill me up and keep me within my calorie goals for the day. I don't get home until after 8pm, and when I do get home I will try to eat something with more veggies. In the meantime, breakfast is 2 scrambled eggs with red pepper, red onion, and mushrooms and a sprinkling of cheddar cheese, served atop two ripe lvely tomatoes. And of course coffee with half and half. One thing I should mention is #1 I usually eat a lot of vegetables, and #2 I tend to stick to a fairly low carb menu when I am watching my weight. And #3 I do not worry about eating fat when I am dieting. In fact, I eat as much as I can and still keep myself under my calorie goals. Fat keeps me full, and tends not to set off cravings--on some days my fat % may be as high (or higher) than 70%. I'm not going to freak out about it. I believe in Dr. Schwartzbein's approach, I think she has good ideas, and I know I feel better when I eat the way she suggests, so I will be following her suggestions as much as possible. Today is a non-running day, which means I will do some stretching exercises when I get home tonight, and will run tomorrow. I am following the Couch to 5K beginning runner's program and am in the middle of Week Three! This is goal that I have had for a long time, so it feels good to be doing it.

OK, I'm not making entries as well as I should, but Since Thursday I have lost 4 pounds (I'm sure it is mostly water). My running is also going well, but right now I am so stressed out about work, I don't know how to deal with it. I hope things get better...I'm having trouble thinking, and I don't want this to sabotage my diet! Drinking lots of water...

I'm trying to visit here at least once a week and make an entry. I finished week 4 of the couch to 5K running plan--and I only have one running day left in week 5. BUT it is the hardest run yet--20 minutes...I have been running very slowly since I always seem to hurt myself while doing this, and I want to be careful. The eating is going well also--I have lost 6 pounds total so far. I am eating a lot of salads and a lot of fish, and seafood. Right now it is 10am, and I am just getting hungry, so I guess I had better make breakfast. Here's to week two of my strict low-carb way of eating!
