Running

A lot of people have boasted the benefits of running...and even though I work out a lot and have toned in various areas, I find I still have trouble running for an extended period of time. I definitely notice this when I am running towards things, e.g. the bus that is supposed to take me to work on time lol. I have tried running, but because I've got a big chest, I find it is too hard, even with a very supportive sports bra. Is there anything I could do to improve my running ability. I love interval training, low impact, circuit training and hi-low workouts...I just fail to understand why I am out of breath so easily still...after working out for a long period of time.

Perhaps investing in one or two really high-end sports bras would help your problem. I know Oprah has one that she recommends...not saying that she's an expert but it's a place to start.

An important thing to think about when running is patience. Try to run at the speed where you can run and carry on a conversation at the same time. I started running about 5 years ago, and it was months before I could go 1 1/2 miles without stopping. Running is something that your body isn't used to handling, so give yourself time to adjust and find the pace/breathing pattern that works for you.

Keep in mind that when you're running to the bus, you're probably sprinting...nobody can keep up a sprint for an extended period of time without years and years of athletic training!

GOOD LUCK!

I just went for my first run today and at 15st 12lbs (222lbs) it was difficult. It took me about 25 mins to run 1.6 miles which is just under 4mph which isn't too bad I suppose. But I found my self getting out of breath and I had to stop on more than one occasion, I am just wondering how long it took people to get used to running and not kepp getting out of breath and are there any tips for a new runner.

for new runners - your best source is to google "couch to 5K" -- coolrunning has a really good plan for getting people running...

You might want to try less supportive sports bras and double up. It sounds weird but I had a huge problem with them being too constrictive and it inhibited my breathing. Now they're being held down but it's still comfortable...well, as comfortable as the uniboob they give you can be.

Also I would recommend starting off at a brisk walk and slowly increase the pace. Your body adjusts to the increase over time and it becomes less difficult to keep up. I think speed comes with the stamina, but I'm still working on that.

I tried the 5k to couch thing for a couple of days but I think I'm too far on the couch side of the spectrum so I plan to build up my stamina a bit. Does anyone know if it matters if I break up the time I jog? For instance is it better for me to try to jog the whole hour or can I get the same results by doing two thirty minute intervals a day?

I'm 235 lbs and began walking when I was at 265lbs. I walked for a good 3 months before I even attempted to run. I started off slowly (like a 3.5 mph walk) and walked for an hour. Gradually you'll gain endurance and find it easier. Listen to your body, mix it up, but for me, walking first was it. Tonight I ran 3.1 miles (getting ready for a 5k next thursday) in 33:02 (that's basically non stop at 5.5mph) I kicked it up a few times to 6.5mph. so it's not about weight, it's about your body adapting slowly over time. FYI, my boobies jiggle too, but fortunately I don't need a bra (or bro or manzier :jump: )
