running shoes vs inserts

I've got a pair of 14-year-old Nikes that I used to run in a long, long time ago. I've added walking/jogging to my routine and I've noticed some major pains in my hips and knees. I know it's because of the shoes and the shifting that's occuring when I jog.

I have a super high instep.

I went to the store to get new running shoes and was asking all kinds of questions about getting running shoes that will help me keep my step in line plus arch support. I was counting on getting Aisics because that's what I used to run in and they have GREAT arch support.

The guy talked me into purchasing arch supports instead. I HATE them! They make my toes scrunch up and push my foot so tall up that my foot is falling out of my shoes.

I'm taking them back tomorrow and buying me a darn good pair of shoes.

Any suggestions?? The 3 stores I went to the other day gave me absolutely NO help. No one had any suggestions for arch support running shoes and all they'd say is Nike is good.

I tend to jog on the balls of my feet too.

So, anyone got any ideas of good running shoes for a high arched tipee-toed girl?

Thanks!
Shel

i know newbalance will size you up in there store.. but why not just get another pair of aisics??

Hey mreik - I forgot to mention... I live in a very rural small town. There are no New Balance stores and absolutely no one here is carrying Asics. It's frustrating as heck. So I can't get a hold of any Asics and they all told me that Asics aren't doing the "arch support" thing anymore anyway. Is that true?

BTW - does anyone know how to spell Aiscis? I'm looking it up... ahh, ASICS. Good grief! :D

Shel

Heh, the way I remember it is that it's like "Basics" only... not. I always used to think that it said Basics... only it didn't.

Anyway, where did you go to buy the arch support? You could always try going back there, but know exactly what you want.

Ahh - good rule of thumb there on the asics thing! Smart! :) :)

That's just it... I've been so far out of the loop on running and shoes all these years that I don't know what the good ones are anymore.

I can get a hold of Nikes, New Balance, Adidas and something called shooka-something or other.... I'm just looking for suggestions on what the good ones are now.

God I'm getting old...

I'm not really an expert on running shoes, but I have a pair of Adidas that have served me well. My cross country coaches recommended Nike's Pegasus or Pegasus II or something like that. How running-oriented is the store you're buying this at? If it's a running store, you could ask to try on a pair on a treadmill or something for a bit, just to see how it feels. If all else fails, you could try jogging around the store.

Thanks snapthat! Good advice!

In the meantime I think I answered my own question:

I don't know anything about this website, but discovered that I'm an underpronator. Wow, I'm learning big words! :D

I got some ideas for some New Balance, Adidas, Asics and Saucony (that was the shocka-thing I couldn't remember... sheesh  ) and I'm going in the store better prepared this time.

Thanks you guys!
Shel

My old running sneakers were Saucony's and they were great. I have custom orthotics because of my knees... but the sneakers were still great!

I'll let you know how they work. I'm excited!

What's wrong with your knees Spockafina?
