Running Question

Just how SHOULD you breathe when you're running? Nose or mouth? In through nose, out through mouth? All nose? (That would be next to impossible for me, I think).

I'm a total mouth-breather, and I wonder if that's part of why I struggle with my breathing when I run. I think if I could get it under control, I could go a lot farther. I just started running recently, and I think I'd really enjoy it and do it more if I could figure this out...

How do I breathe?>

Many new runners are preoccupied with their breathing as they run their first few miles. We get questions about whether it's best to breathe in through the mouth or through the nose, about how quickly a runner should breathe, about the proper shape of the mouth when exhaling.

Don't worry about it. As a new runner, there's no need to concern yourself with the modest performance benefits to be gained from subtle breathing patterns. You've been breathing all your life, and your body will figure out the best way to get the air it needs. Just breathe as naturally as possible and put it out of your mind.

If you're running in cold weather, though, you may experience a kind of burning sensation from the cold air. Breathing through the nose can help compensate for this, as can breathing through a scarf or turtleneck.

I've got a link somewhere that is probably on my machine at home -from a military fitness site.. where it goes into a lengthy discussion on breathing and differint types of breathing...

I was always taught in through your nose out through your mouth.. Good luck!

Well, I've found several articles that said that same thing. I will be running during class tonight, so I'll try it and let ya'll know if I can tell a difference.

Thanks for the responses. :)

I'm a mouth-breather, too. However, when I force myself to take deep breathes through my nose I can feel my energy level increase --- it feels great.

The problem is that once I get a little fatigued, I lose concentration and stop breathing properly :)

I am both to be honest. I seem to start out breathing through my nose....then my mouth a little....then my mouth as I get more tired.....after about a mile or so....then at the VERY end I seem to suck it up and go back to my nose

Weird? I know....but I just always seem to do that :(
