Running out of ideas

I'm 18, turn 19 in 1 week. For the last say 5 years i have put weight on, to the point now i'm at 17 stone, ever since i've put weight on i've tried to get it back off again, but nothing ever works. Well it does.. only i give up, I go on to a diet with full intention of sticking to it, but i forget.. and find myself in the same position over and over.
It doesn't help too i work long hours, and so i eat whilst i'm at work. I'll have anything thats quick, because thats most practical in my proffession.
It's not that i don't want to lose weight, i really do, i just don't have ability to stick to it.
So i guess im on here to kind of help me stick to it, i guess that if i pay more attention to how much weight i'm losing, i'll be more likely to stick at it.
I want to lose around 4 stone initially, and maybe more after. My guess is a smaller target will keep me more motivated.
We will guess i see?. By the way i'm Dan

Welcome to the boards Dan.

Theres nothing wrong with snacking, as long as its on healthy food - I snack all day at work (I work 12 hour shifts), and I take a supply of fruit, raw carrots, canned fish, hard boiled eggs, etc. Our managers started buying in cream cakes for staff on a Friday, but after my suggestions, they also started buying fruit :)

Other ways of avoiding the munchies:

ALWAYS have a breakfast, and always find time for it. I personally like a high fibre cereal breakfast, in particular, I have porridge oats almost daily. It keeps me feeling full for at least half a day. Some others prefer a protein breakfast i.e. one based on eggs (not fried!), or kippers etc. If you skip breakfast, your body will be craving a quick fix later in the day.

Get plenty of fibre by eating oats, other wholegrains, vegetables, fruits, and some unsalted nuts/seeds (but watch their calories). Also drink plenty of water - throughout the day. It aids digestion, fights hunger, and will combine with the fibre to give you a full feeling. I drink cups of water regular at work. Eat nutritionally rich foods such as (here we go again!) fruits, vegetables, real foods etc.

Eat small portions, eat often. It works for some people, myself included. I don't have two or even three meals per day and starve in between. I graze throughout the day. Some fruits and vegetables are very low calorie. Of course, if you want to lose weight, you still have to watch those total calories.

Finally, my usual soapbox sermon on dieting - don't diet, change your lifestyle! Surprisingly few people successfully complete slimming diets and then keep the fat off for more than a few years. Thats because they return to the bad eating and activity habits that made them fat in the first place. This doesn't mean that you don't have to reduce your calorific consumption in order to lose weight, you will have to, especially for a 'weight-loss' period. But keep looking at the long term - make changes to your diet and to your activity levels that you intend to maintain post weight-loss.

Good luck on the journey Dan, its worth making.

P.s Happy Birthday :)

Exact same situation I was in, 17, having gained to 17stone over 5years...

Hit the gym, mix of weights and cardio and eat healthy with a few calories taken off (Only a few to begin with)
Stay away from fad diets and pills, if you really feel the need to, just get green tea and caffeine (Don't overdo the caffeine, it's really nasty)

And keep with it :) It's hard at first, but once your jeans fall down 1) you look like a prat, but! 2) you can't help but smile and carry on.

Good luck ;)

Hi Mate,
I am a bit older than you but I have been there a few times. I have always been big, but kept hitting 18 or 19 stone. When I get there I think, right I have to sort this out. I diet and exercise for a couple of months, get down to about 17 stone, get bored and then it gradually comes back again. In January this year I hit 19 stone again for the third time and thought "here we go again". This time I read loads of things on the web (including this forum) and realised that dieting was not the way to go. I had to make a permanent change. Therefore I started eating much more healthy food. At first it was difficult to find stuff I liked, but gradually over time I have found loads of options, and now it seems like I am just eating normally, but actually it is much more healthy than what I was eating before. My biggest thing was cutting out crisps and biscuits. I used to eat two or three packets of crisps at a time, or a whole packet of biscuits. By cutting these two things out and uping the exercise a bit (at first i just used to go walking on my lunch break for 20 minutes) I have really seen results. 3 months later I am almost below 16 stone (the lowest I have been for a long time).

I have managed to do it, so I am sure ou can to.

See if you can make some small changes at first and I am sure you will see some big differences.

Also make sure you read alot about it on the web. There is loads of really useful stuff out there.

Best of luck and let us know how you are getting on.

Cheers.
