Running on Sore Calves

My calves are pretty sore from weights last night.

I have a long run (12 mi) planned for tonight. They will warm up and I will forget all about the soreness, hence I will propbably run no matter what is said-

BUT- is it good for me to run them when they hurt like this?

You usually soak in a tub, dont you FF......Did you soak last night? Or maybe soak in the tub with warm water (and the other stuff you put in it), rest 24 hours, and then take off 2morrow--after soaking again. Give it 24 hours (at least until 2morrow), and if they still hurt, still run, once you get warmed up, it will subside.

Knowing you, you will probably run away, and I agree it will subside after you warm up; however, since its so close to the REASON its sore, it would be more beneficial to the MUSCLE if it sat one day in recovery mode, before running. I suggest one day rest to let it BUILD and recover.

But....your a stubborn man....and we love ya for it :)

not alot of experience with the weights in tandem to endurance training though. It is close the "reason" they are sore. Even when I strtch them they have a lil wiggle inside, like "don't mess with me right now"

maybe I will swim tonight.

Tomorrow I am riding my bike to and from work,, so they better shape up by then,, or torture is their only fate!!! guaranteed!

I like the Swim idea, FF. Just some food for thought: Your power can increase through weight training and in essence effect your endurance to a degree; therefore, letting an important muscle like the calf, rest, at optimum times, can be beneficial---and INCREASE YOUR POWER

I know, this is hard to swallow for someone with a heart of a lion, but sometimes, even lions rest.......

Isn't there anybody else that has an opinion about running on sore calves?

OK-- how about playing tennis with shoulders that are sore from lifting?

Just the basic question of is it good or bad to cardio a muscle that has been wieghted on. however you say it, I think you would understand.

I could have sent chillen a PM, but i didn't.

Well put it this way. If we all just waited till we were never sore from weights we'd never get anything done! Part of getting stronger is working through some forms of soreness, although its really important to know the "good" sore from the "bad" sore. If you're walking around and can't loosen up your calves by stretching or walking you shouldn't run. You'll be compensating somehow with other muscles and could be more at risk for injury. A good sore is one you can still easily use your full range of motion with but, yeah, it hurts because it was worked.

Shoulders seem to be able to be a little more resilient. I'm sure the tennis is no biggie. But your asking about tennis and then going to swim? lol. odd duck. Swimming on sore shoulders-be careful. its like running on a sore calf.

I often have my very best workouts when I'm very sore. but I'm careful of that fine line since I seem to get injured a lot in my old age :roll eyes:

I'm not sure why I just wrote all that because I know you're probably already on yoru way to the gym to do what you're gonna do. lol

I think its ok to do the cardio as long as it isn't painfully sore while your performing the exercise. If it is the type of sore calves where 5 minutes in the workout it goes away, then thats fine.

But you have to be careful with how far you push yourself otherwise you might injure yourself for a while. I remember a time I was jump skipping when the bottom of my foot( tendon/muscle) was hurting, i continued pushing myself to the point where i injured the foot and limped and couldn't skip for 3-4 weeks.

Know your bodies limits.

I'm going running. then i stay within range of the kids.

Tennis is a VERY hard game, I was just being sassy.

here we go. 12 miles. just a nice evening run eh!

I
Know your bodies limits.

the closer to the edge I get, the further the limit moves away man!!! I'm dooomed for greater performance... it's almost a curse!!!

AND--- you have no idea what it takes to impress a girly like Sparrow!!!

hey!! whatever motivates ya right!

night night

FF

I also have an idea for tomorrow.

as long as you keep your technique.

You might also cause the pressure in the calfs to increase compressing low pressure veins and possible ischemia

I've done it a lot (that is, cardio with DOMS).

I don't *think* it will injure you as long as you keep your form consistent. At least, that's my attitude. Pain, not injury, is perfectly fine...
