running in a 5K, what do you think?

Hello everyone,

I am planning on running in my first 5 K in about a month, but have some reservations about it. My reason for doing it in the first place is to challenge myself. This isn't something I ever really planned or wanted to do, I heard about it and thought, well why not. I am not a runner, but want to do the best I can and am worried that I am not in the best shape I should be for it.

My question is, what sort of training should I be doing for this (race is a month away)? How challenging is a 5K for a beginner? =)...My average running a mile is about 11 minutes. (like I said, I'm not the best runner haha) Anyways, I would really appreciate any thoughts, encouragement, advice, whatever! Thanks in advance! =)

5k is just about 3 miles. If you want to be best prepared for the run just start running weekly and timing yourself, and every week try to beat your previous time or run even longer.

I never run 2 days in a row, I always put a day of rest in between runs, but thats my personal habit. If I know I am going on long runs, I stay away from junk food and eat healthy before and I can definitely tell a difference. I wouldn't try anything too challenging the first couple of runs, just do something comfortable so you won't get frustrated. After the first couple times, you will notice that the runs will start getting easier and easier. Make sure you stretch a lot before and after and have a nice cool down period after the run. Good Luck with the 5k!

Congratulations on the self-motivation which is the most effective and longest lasting motivation there is!:beerchug:

Just run as much and as hard as you can between now and then and you will be able to complete it. I would think you should be able to maintain your current 11 min/mile pace which would work out to a 35 min 5K. A lot of people will finish after you and think of all the people who are sitting at home eating bon bons while you're out doing this.

Go for it.

Congrats on entering a race! I'm running my 1st 5k this summer too. I had never ran more than a mile before training for this, so I know how you are feeling. I'm worried too that I may not be in as good shape as I should be. (I timed a mile last week and it was 10:30 :( )Just time yourself and run your own race, don't race against anyone else or their times. Try to beat your best time and have fun. That's what the races are all about!:)

great post!!

5 K is not as far as it feels to you right now. My recommendation-

this weekend- take a water bottle 1.6 miles away from your home and hide it in a bush or soemthing. go back home, get out of your car, take a couple of deep breaths and go get your water bottle. you will be back home within an hour- even if you walk most of the way.

Then you will know how far it is, the fear will be gone.

second- set your goal to run the entire way- no walking. Time does not matter. Believe me. if you have a 45 minute time and do not walk at all, you will feel better than if you have a 36 minute time, and had to walk to the finish.

So- the goal is to run the whole way.

Biggest stumbling block, on race day, is trying to keep up in the beginning. The peeps who can control themselves will run past all the fast start / walking people at the end. SO- you just run your pace, that will allow you to run the whole way.,

Good luck!

YOU CAN DO IT!

Wow, thank you to everyone for all your helpful advice!!! I haven't kept up with my running as much as I would have liked, but still working on it and keeping in mind what you've all said! Thanks again, I will definitely let you know how it goes! =)
