Do you have good running shoes? That is one of the most important thing to get.
When I told my father in law that I was going to drop my weight and join the Air Force, he bought me a real nice pair of Reebok's. I think it's just the fact that I'm running possibly.

Do you strech before and after?
Yep. I sure do. There's a New Balance outlet here in San Antonio that will take your height, weight, foot shape, etc. and come up with the perfect New Balance shoe for you. The last pair of New Balance shoes I had hurt my feet really bad to the point of me taking them off and walking the rest of the way home.

Pain is part of the process...

I've been needing to run because I'd drop my weight a lot faster. The only problem is I hate running. It's not like I'm inexperienced at running or anything (ask the cops in my childhood), but my legs always hurt afterwards. :(

Whereas warm ups, cool downs, good stretching, proper shoes, etc, all help tremendously, show me one person who is starting running, especially an overweight person, who doesn't hurt like hell afterwards at the beginning and I can guarantee they are lying to you. :)

It hurts. Damn straight. When I first started down this road, walking the 4 blocks from the subway station caused shin splints and agonizing lower back pain. However, if I followed my first instinct and took a few days off for the soreness to pass, the very next time I would be sore as hell again. it never ended. However, once I accepted that the pain and soreness (not injury mind you) was part of the process of training my muscles in new and exciting ways, I learned tro push through it. It would have been soooooo easy to keep taking days off when I was sore or stiff, but then I would still be walking 4 blocks from the subway now, 40 pounds heavier and just as miserable as ever.

However, I did push through those initial aches and pains, and slowly but surely, they went away. Soon I was walking 6 blocks, then 10 blocks then 5km home from work with no subway. And every increase in distance brought new pains and grief. But I pushed on.

Then I started running. And like so many of you, I could only go a short distance before I was walking and the next day hurt like hell. But once again I pushed on through and soon it was further and further between walking breaks and the knees, quads and lower back werent as sore....

Now I run home from work 5X a week at 5km per day. In the beginning I would need muscle oil and rubs on my back every day, tensor bandages and more mucle rub on the knees and legs every night. And the next day when I got up I thought I was going to die. But I didn't

Now, only 3 short months later, I dont have any shin splints, my quads not only feel great, but are without a doubt the most awesome looking part of my body (along with the calves). I get up in the mornings and my legs and back feel great, no muscle rubs, oils or pain killers required. I literally feel like a new man.

But to think all that could have happened without some sort of adjustment period, which yes, does involve discomfort and pain, is not realistic. If it was easy to run and exercise everyone would do it and there would be no overwight people.

IMO that is the true measure of success. For some (myself included) we need to break down the mental barriers which cause us to eat poorly, and while not physical pain, it DEFINITELY is pain. I came to the realization (thankfully!) that the saying "no pain, no gain" is 100% true. It takes a period of discomfort and yes, pain, in order to get your body to a point where it has made the adjustments and doesn't hurt anymore. Of course injuries are an all together other thing, but with proper warm ups and cool downs that should be the least of your worries.

SO in a nutshell...... Your legs hurt after running? Welcome to the club! But really, it does go away. But don't use that pain as an excuse to stop every time it gets a little stiff or sore. Push through it and reach your goals! Once you get past the adjustment period and your body gets used to the new demands placed upon it, you will ask yourself why you havent been doing it all along...

Thank you all for the advice. Today was my second day and it was no better. But the good thing is it wasnt worse.

Just do what you can, stop when it doesn't feel right--walk if you have to. I've been there--having to stop at half a mile. The important thing is to continue on. I don't know your weight, but if you're very heavy you may want to walk or power walk until you're a bit lighter, if you feel pain. Running shouldn't be about PAIN, but I'll tell ya--when you push yourself to the next level, it sure does suck! :rotflmao:

thanks for the tip curvie, maybe I should combine walking with running.
I am 195 and I was beginning to think if I am too old for this ( I am pushing 30  ). I dont know if running is too much for my weight. I get the pain in about 10 mins, and after I stop running it goes away in about 20 mins.

If my legs dont break this week, I am sure I will not stop. :)

Also be sure to stretch afterwards and try not to learn if its actual pain or if its your mind playing tricks on you-I always had shin splints when I was in the army I really dont know why:confused:
We all have to start somewhere:)

thanks Rimay,
shin splints!! so that was the name of that sucker. I did some googling on that name and found that it goes away with stretching. Should try that tomorrow.

Want to know how long I made it on my first run?

4 blocks....then I almost passed out

Now I can run 1.5 miles and getting better every week.

You WILL get better.

Thank you for sharing your experience, OrleansLink. I hope I will.

go slow. focus on time, not distance. I started a couple weeks ago and am only doing 5-6 reps of 3 minutes walking/ 2 minutes running every second day.
the idea is to build up slowly, and give your body time in between to heal and recover.
read up on how running works and various running programs for beginners. I recommend Running for Mortals. I've about 3/4 of the way through it now and finding it very informative.
also, check out these sites:

I know we all want to be able to run 5 or 10 miles in one go but if you're just starting, start small.
btw, .6 miles is pretty awesome for the first time. that's 1 kilometer.

Thank you for the advice and the link, daybyday. Its only that I never did any physical work since I left school. For the past two days I have been running roughly around 10 mins. I will try your approach and see if it works for me. My initial plan was to run atleast for an hour everyday, but it seems like its a bit too much for a starter.

Thanks again for all the advice. Lucky me to have so many friendly people to clear the confusion on my second day. :hug2:

Mani : Please don't be embarrased, at some point of time we were all beginners (I still am). If last September somebody told me to run 100 feet for my life, I would have just said: shot me now and get it over with. :) Now I can run 3 miles although I am a very SLOW runner. You got great advices from everybody!! Keep on running, little by little every day!!

I skipped my run today, but going tomorrow. Did my Pilates tape instead. Well, discovered a new challenge. I died doing my pilates tape. There were moves on there I could just watch, there was no way of me even attempting!!

Everyone have a great day, evening, morning...anything!!
Hajni

Thanks for your advice Hajni. I want to run. I have to run. Only that if I dont have this pain, I shall run more. And yes, I am pleasantly surprised to see so many friendly people. Hope things get better soon.

Mani, if it's pain in your shin and sharp and lingers for after your workout, especially when you flex your foot, it's shin splints. You should stretch and you can buy athletic tape and wrap your shins.

If it doesn't linger and if it isn't sharp, it's your muscles getting stronger! That's completely normal and you'll start to see some definition along your lower leg bone (the name escapes me, tibia, I think it is?). I know your legs probably hurt like whoa and each foot you run drags on and on but I guarantee that it will get easier.

My first run during high school track was my hardest. I could only run a mile and I was going SO slow by the end that my friends walked backwards faster than me, lol! But I ended up running the two mile race and the next year could run 5 miles in 40 minutes :D I can't do that now, hahah, but I am working up to it again.

Yesterday I ran 3.5 miles and it definitely hurt but I got to that numb place - thankfully, just before I had to run up this big hill, lol. The guys I ran with were really awesome, asked how I was doing and really encouraged me during the last 1.5 miles. I am going for 4 miles on Thursday with them and I'm excited. I love running!

a little late on the reply here but wanted to throw my 2 cents in for mani

Stretching is essential to running, you should always stretch before and after a run. Also, beginning with a 5 minute walk, or bike ride is good to do before stretching. It's not good to stretch cold muscles, you need to give them a light warm up before you start to stretch them (kinda like taffy or something, if its cold and you stretch it, it just snaps; if it's warm, it has more 'pull' room if you catch my drift).
If you feel bad pain, walk it out until it feels better and try again. It will get easier, and it's soo worth it.

Curvy- I think I'm starting to feel sympathy pains in my ankle for you! haha.
I was running last night and had to stop cause it was hurting so much. I think I must have knocked it on something the other day without realizing it. Its a little purple and puffing up a bit. So, rest and ice tonight, hopefully back out there tomorrow.

Keep it up everyone! Loving all the motivated runners here. :)

Well tomorrow I am going running I am praying for a miracle my baby sleeps all night but even if he doesnt I really need to go out and run. I cant believe I am starting to get runners itch-LOL I was running on the threadmill at the gym this morning and I really revisited why I hate running on them-I always feel like I am going to fall off its crazy!
So tommorrow I am going to aim for 8-10KM I really want to start upping my mileage slowly.I notice on my long runs once I get my second wind I am feeling so good I could go forever------then I realize damn I have to run all the way back home:rotflmao: But I still love it.Since I started running I am losing inches like crazy at first i was like gosh I am not losing that much but then I put on some of my clothes and they are slipping down:) thats all the motivivation I need!

Hey, that's GREAT Rimay!!!

I'm itching to run too, but not til Friday!!! Today = weights. I'm debating where and how far to run......probably not the woods, although my ankle is 99% better, I don't wanna risk it. Looks like it's the beach/harbor/meadow trail, then. Oooh can't wait!

If you get shin splints, DO NOT JUST SIT AROUND FOR DAYS

I know a lot of people who think they get Shin Splints and they try and stay away from walking for a week.

I tell them....do some exercise but take it easy....don't just loaf.

The shin splints will just come back

I am getting light shin splints but still running every other day. I take shorter strides and run on heavy grass :)

No I didnt stop. I went running for the third day. But as our friends adviced, I decided to walk first for about half hour slowly increasing the pace. I did some stretching and then I started running, but slower than the previous two days. Amazing.. I ran for about 16 mins - 3/4 a mile!! And no shin splints today, though I got some pain in the calf - but thats muscles right? So something is happening. I also did some weight training today and my total body is aching. It is painful, but I am getting some kick out of it - like alcohol - bitter but pleasant. :)

I am gonna continue this and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Thanks for all the advice friends for I might have stopped after the first day.

Really very useful. I did that and wow - the splints are gone. Thank you very much Nicole.

I was supposed to do intervals today but turns out my area is WAY too hilly to do that. I just can't sprint up a hill! D:

So I ran 30 minutes of hills and it hurt and I was sweaty but that shower felt so good after!

Well. Today I thought about running but decided not to. Tomorrow I definitely will though (hopefully early in the morning before it rains). I will let ya'll know about how many minutes it was and about the distance I ran. So tomorrow, count me in the elite Runner's Club.

from what I'm reading you shouldn't stretch before a run. a 5 minute brisk walk is warmup enough.

and if you feel "bad pain", stop running. yes walk a bit but if it doesn't ease up, call it a day. being preventitive when it comes to injuries is better than ending up with a stress fracture or worse.

I warm up and stretch.. I sure feel waaaay better when I'm nice and stretched so I'm going to keep doing it anyway.

Glad to see you all running!! :D

No running since Wharf to Wharf, will do tomorrow A.M. Here are some pics of the race:

and the male winner was a Morracan, did the 6 miles in 25 minutes and change! #4

20 mins today. almost close to a mile. but got the splints back. :(. will try for a mile tomorrow.

Awesome! Good luck with tomorrow's workout. I promise this WILL get easier.

Today I was supposed to do a 4 mile run with my group but I was late  so I hopped on the treadmill and did intervals! 5 minute warmup at 5.5mph, then five sets of alternating 2 minutes at 7.5mph and 3 minutes at 6 mph. I'm really happy to say that my mind felt SO good even on the fifth set. It was really kind of funny to feel this huge discrepancy between the pain my body felt and how focused my mind was. At 20 minutes I was like, maybe I should stop, but my mind said, "What are you talking about? You can do another!" so I did two more :D

What was really cool is that I ran 3 miles in 28 minutes.. about my cross country pace in high school (two years ago). In my running group I guess we have been going kind of slow so I am glad to know that yes, I can do this during the race!

Then I hopped on the bike for 22 minutes to keep my heart rate up before doing my weights - today was legs and it was a harder workout (I use ActivTrax at my gym) so I totally felt it.

But then I went out to eat with my best friend at Applebee's and then got some comfier workout clothes. My fat thighs are chafing :<

I can't wait to run tomorrow! Not sure what I'm going to do.. I might try to do a 5k at race pace and see how that goes. That's hard on a treadmill but I will try it out anyway.

sirant: Please do me a favor, PLEASE!!! Get yourself good shoes!!! Bad shoes can eff-up your legs/feet/hips and such!!! You don't want to end up with an injury!!

Sigh....
You and I both know it.....

Crappy thing is that although I am getting more "on scale" size wise in China, my big ole feet arent. There are tons of stores with awesome shoes, but would even just one have a size 12 or bigger? Nope....

Sadly my passport is in the long, painful and expensive process of being replaced right now so I can't even go to hong kong shoe hunting. So I will have to wait until August 3rd at very least.....

But I do plan on going and getting some proper shoes. So far these hikers I bought last year have been ok, but they have got a ton of miles on them already......

Heres hoping I find something good in hong kong next month.....:jump:

Heya,

New to the forum today.

Thought I would check out the runners club since I bought some Nike running shoes for $130 about 3 weeks ago and haven't even put them on yet, apart from trying them on in the shop!

Feeling a bit useless at the moment but want to get into running. It's winter and I'm trying to make all the excuses under the sun

This week is going to be my starting point to becoming a runner:jump:
