RoseofSharon's Diary

My name is Liz, and my goal weight is 50 pounds away. I'd like to see myself do this in about a year. I have an event in May, but I wonder if that's too much to lose too soon. Then again, it's only about 5 pounds a month. So, next May.

I have been working toward my goal by walking with a friend in the evenings and (sorta) watching what I eat. I'd like to keep a journal of excercise so I know I'm getting my 5 half hour work outs a week recommended by my Dr and be more strict about what I choose for munchies.

This website seems to be a good place for support, as are my best friends. I think it CAN be attainable, but I need to crack down on myself. So far I've managed to lose 10 pounds and stay the same for two months. I need to get the weight loss started again.

* Note to self. Today you walked one half hour with Bekah and did some meditation and some very basic yoga stretches. It will be interesting to get back into this, but well worth the time. Remember how good you felt when you took yoga classes. Also cancelled eharmony, who needs that kind of pressure to look perfect? Love yourself first!!!

Congrats on your weight loss so far. Losing 5 pounds per month isn't dangerous at all if that's what you're worried about. Losing 1 to 2 pounds per week is healthy so if you really crack down, there is no reason why you couldn't drop your weight even sooner.

I wish you the very best, I joined the forum last month and have found it a wonderful source of support.

Day 2

Today was a better day, food choice wise. Breakfast still needs a little work, as the family always has Wegmans blueberry muffins during the weekend (have you seen them? It's a portion nightmare). But, I could choose worse. Mom and I went shopping during the day and at lunch we stopped at Burger King...I had a salad. Okay, correction, I had half a crispy chicken garden salad with about a third of the actual salad dressing. Dinner was chicken catetorie (sp?) but was skinless and trimmed and I've never been a fan of pasta, so that wasn't an issue. Trouble is, now it's later-7:30 and I'm ALWAYS starving at this point. I wonder why? Anyone else have this problem? I really shouldn't eat at all given that I go to bed around 10, but if I don't have something I can't sleep well. I'd love a bowl of Dublin Mudslide Icecream, but that's not a great choice. Popcorn would be better, but I don't Want popcorn. Maybe sugar free pudding?

For excercise I went walking with Bekah for 30 minutes. Someday I should go and see exactly how far I walk in 30 minutes. I know at some point I'll probably want to lengthen it. I also worked on cleaning my bedroom-and if you'd seen that you'd know that's gotta count for something. =-)

Well, time for my squats and a bath. Till later!

Thanks very much, Mike! I was once very strict with myself, but I've let it slide over the past few years.

Twice now when I was out walking a car with a group of skinny teens comes racing by and shouts out of the window come "C'mon, fatty, move it!" I keep thinking to myself, you know, in 15 years they're all going to be fat and dropping dead of heart attacks. I Will be the healthy one. Ha. =-)

In the evenings if I'm hungry like rosered, I say fruits, veggies and of course yogurt. I've also been known to eat an energy bar if my calorie intake was too low for the day.

As for breakfast, how about a bowl of cereal? It's simple, I know but with skim milk or 1% it really isn't that bad... How about mixing some cereal with yogurt? just throwing out suggestions for ya... Have a great week.

Hello there!

Hey there! I'm new here too and have about 50lbs. to lose as well! I've lost some so I'm about 185 now! My goal is to lose 2lbs. a week and hopefully lose it all by new years! I'm very impatient lol! My problem is that I get busy and forget to eat or I get down on myself and choose not to, so my body goes into starvation mode and holds on to any little thing I give it, like it's saying better store this, who knows when i'll get any more! I have a terrible habit of eating before bed, I get watching some show and start snackin'!! I've been very good lately, I find that if I eat my 5-6 small meals throughout the day then I'm not as hungry at night. I've cleaned all the bad stuff out of the house so I'm not tempted. The other I night I just wanted food, so I was staring at the baking choco chips mmmmmm, but then I was like wow...those are for baking not eatin straight what has become of me! I agree with mike and roserd try something like veggies or a fruit before bed. I'm very happy you've decided to join us, I love it here it really keeps me in the right frame of mind throughout the day. When I fall of the wagon I just come here and check up on everyone! Don't worry about those skinny people, the same thing happens to me. Theyr'e just bored and lookin for something to do, they forget about you as soon they keep driving. Forget about them! IBest of luck... I know we can do this!!

Thanks for the ideas! =-) For breakfast I do eat cereal with skim milk-I'm not a Big breakfast eater, but I do make the effort. I think I really will work the yogurt in a bit more, I seriously hadn't thought about it other than at lunchtime. Sounds good to me!

Re: Nanders

Thanks for the help! I know, bedtime is the hardest time of all for me. I don't really snack that much during the day because I'm so busy (preschool teacher). I will try the veggies and such. I also love wheat things and roasted red pepper hummus, although I'm not sure about the fat in the hummus...do I want to know? =) LOL. I am really enjoying being here, it's helped a lot in terms of sticking in a healthier frame of mind!!!

It's Raining, it's pouring (day 3)

*Stares out window* Blah. Rain. *Grins* But I STILL got my walk in!

This morning I went to work and noted that the kids (as usual) were a little hyper after the weekend. So...we took a nice long walk at a steady clip today. I think I tuckered them out--every single one of the little cherubs were face first in the pillows at naptime. It worked out even better because later in the eveing when I went to take my walk I discovered that we were expecting rain. Get this, I walked the same distance in Half the time...but because I had walked earlier, I still managed to walk nearly an hour vs. my typical half hour a day.

Breakfast: Raisin Bran, skim milk, half cup of (black) coffee
Lunch: Bologna sandwich on white, tomatoe soup, animal crackers (originally a chocolate cupcake I banned from my sight immediately-Very proud of myself for that one).
Snack: 1/2 serving animal crackers, small cup kool aid
Snack: 5 saltines, one slice american cheese
Dinner: Stuffed pepper (the meat filling, anyway) 1/2 corn on the cob, 2 baby potatoes, green beans, skim milk. No butter.

I really feel stuffed after dinner-the veggies really Are a good idea!!! Not really thrilled about the bologna sandwich, but that's what was being served. I will pack my own tomorrow. And this time, I won't forget my water!!!

Hi!! Sounds like your off to a good start by adjusting things that aren't working for you!! Just take it one day at a time. I think it's great that you got two workouts!! I've also noticed that I've upped my speed while working out.

Veggies are a great addition to every meal. Have you tried scrambled eggs in the morning? They're a great about keeping me full for quite a while. Chop some onions and green peppers in a zip lock bag and through it in the freezer and it you have an easy addition to your eggs in the morning. Baby carrots and fat free ranch dressing make a great snack in the middle of the afternoon too. If you want something creamy at night, try looking for low fat ice cream, but beware not all are created equal. One brand I've tried that I think doesn't even taste like low fat ice cream is Edy's slow churned chocolate fudge chunk. Sooooo goood. And only 120 cals for a 1/2 cup.

Well, keep up the great work. I got a good chuckle out of your description of the kids at nap time.

Thanks, Manaloa! Usually int he mornings the most I can muster myself to cook is instant oatmeal-on a really cold day. I think eggs would be a great idea on weekends to replace the muffins, though. I know we have a good crop of tomatoes and pepper and onions I could add into them. Great suggestion! :)

I actually counted calories today. I swore I wouldn't, seems to obsessive to me, but I decided that it would probably help me to understand where I was getting most of them. With that said:

Breakfast Cereal and milk, 150 cal
AM Snack Special K Snack Bites 90 cal
Lunch 98% Fat Free turkey on light bread 130 cal, 1 banana 107
PM Snack 1 cup vanilla yogurt 200
Throughout day 1 gatorade, 150 cal
Dinner 1 6 inch Subway bourbon sub,(350) 1 cup skim milk 90, 1/2 apricot 15
Total 1282

I've read enough in journals to understand how and why snacks Are important, so I added a few healthy ones in. It did seem to help. The yogurt surprised me. Maybe I should look into light flavors, although believe it or not, I don't like fruit flavored yogurts. *chuckles* Finally, I drink a bottle of gatorade every day-it helps me keep hydrated, and normally I just don't drink as much water. Maybe I should try to push it a little more. It is lower in calories (lol) and sugar. Still, this did not turn out nearly as badly as I'd worried.

Walked 30 minutes today. Did I mention I walk with my best friend every evening? It should be mentioned we live 5 hours apart. We chat on cell phones and catch up while getting in shape. I love technology. We can have weight loss buddies far away, online and via cell phone! =)

You're off to a great start Liz! By the way, I love your username, it's so pretty. It reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath.

I really do have to read that book...

Thank you. The name comes from a memory of my grandmother. She had these beautiful Rose of Sharon bushes around her farm and when I was little she would pick a blossom and a bud and make a doll from them for me. She died last summer, and instead of a rose, I made a Rose of Sharon doll and put it on her casket. Gram had heart disease. Though she survived bipass surgery, she just didn't have the will to keep going. Part of my weight loss is in honor of her--I want a healthy heart!

Excellent and inspiring idea. I've seen people talking on the phone while exercising because they seem bored, but to plan to talk every day to a good friend while exercising and still push yourself - what a great idea! And it gets you out there every night. I walk with a friend every morning, and it is the single biggest success factor I've had this year.

Love your handle "RoseofSharon". I assume you are referring to the very pretty flower?

Congrats on your efforts and success so far. It sounds like you are doing well. I too recently tried counting calories, and though a little tedious, it's eye opening, isn't it?

I went to the website of the National Heat Blood and Lung institute, where they have a calculator to use. It told me a normal bmi is between 18.5-24.9, or for me between 98-132 pounds. From previous experience, I know anything below 115 and I look like a stick-I'm a women meant to have hips, if you know what I mean, so I settled for 125-in my normal range, and where I will still look good. Good luck, hon!

Okay, it's been a couple of days, but don't worry, you didn't miss much. =-) I’ve been pretty good the past few days. I've really been impressed this week by the choices of healthier items over junk food. Ex, instead of fast food, having a Healthy Choice Meal, instead of chips some fruit. Whether or not is has shown anything in numbers doesn't matter so much as it's improved my confidence. I FEEL better knowing I'm healthier.

I went to weigh myself today and came upon an interesting find. At first weight, it read 173. "Wahoo!" I thought, "I've lost 2 pounds this week!" Better than that, I'd finally broken out of being stuck at 174-175! Well, when I stepped on it again 2 minutes later to show my mother, I weighed 175. Nothing had changed with me; I hadn't eaten anything or put on my work-wear. I do have to squint down at the lines when I weigh, though, and that's tough. I'm thinking of getting a digital scale to take the question out of things. So, I have no idea if I did lose weight this week, but I feel better, and I've noticed my legs feel more firm, which is cool.

Um, I hate to ask, but can someone tell me a little about the tickers you're using? I think they're wonderful in terms of keeping track and giving yourself a boost. I've made one, I just can't figure out how to post it. Do I use the html version or what? Thanks!
