Rope Skipping?

So, I am passed my 6-weeks check up after delivery of my beautiful babygirl. I can work out again!! WHOOT!

Now.. Here's the deal. I don't have the money to go to the gym OR to buy a hometrainer.. I bought a skipping rope today... I heard that that ths is an effective way to loose some weight!

Anyone with experience? Anyone know of a site that demonstrates or describes some rope skipping exercise?
 
I have been jumping rope for 5 minutes before work... 10 minutes at lunch... and sometimes 10 minutes when I get home everyday! For me, a jump rope has been one of the best purchases I've made ever!

*It's conveniently portable
*It's more challenging than I ever thought
*Super cheap

I hope I'll be able to go for longer with a jump rope before tiring out... good luck!
 
Hehehe, my boyfriend got one a few weeks ago... this weekend it came in handy for the first time... I REALLY wanted to get exercise in and didn't feel like leaving the house... so I skipped! I just tried to go for as long as I can til I trip up (or get to 30 jumps, hehe) then catch my breath and do it again... for 20 minutes. Really tough!

I had to get my technique right first... I'm actually gonna go google that to make sure I'm doing it right... Have fun skipping!
 
I ve done that 5 year ago, 2000 a day.
separate to 7 set as 500, 400, 300, 200, 200, 200, 200 in 1 - 1.3 Hr. daily
Lost 10kg in 3 months by skipping robe only without other workout.
Thats my first weight lost secret.
And i can do it in my own room.
 
There have been times when jumping rope has gotten me more winded than running. It is an excellent workout!

I say just pick a number and shoot for it. I started at 50 and just kept going until I could get to 200 (without passing out) haha.

You can also cycle through long slow jumps and super speedy jumps, but I am sure you already know that. :)

Jumping rope is one of the most calorie-intensive workouts you can do, and if you're doing it right, is a fantastic FBW. That's why boxers and MMA fighters often jump rope - it's an extremely demanding exercise, and undoubtedly a great way to lose weight.

You may also want to throw in some calisthenics and/or plyometrics so you can increase your efficiency... things like bodyweight squats and lunges, push ups, pullups/chinups, planks, etc. to help you - it's proven that you can burn fat 3 times faster if you combine lifting and cardio. :)
 
Any time the weather isn't unbearably hot(as it's been quite often lately), I'll venture outside at night and get in 100 "running" jumps. (Basically jump roping, except forward instead of in place, so that I go back and forth down the street.) I'm trying to work up to 150, and so on.
I could probably get in more even now, if it weren't for this nasty hot weather. D:
 
wow... good to know. i had in school so much fun with jumping rope and i didn't think that this is so good for loseing weight.

so this will be the first thing what i buy, when we move into a house. here in the apartment is it a little bit to loud. we live upstairs and downstairs are old people... :blush5:

and its cheep as well, thats great...
 
Jumping rope is great.

I jump rope almost every day now. I pack my rope whenever I'm away from home. This is the single biggest contributor to me getting back in shape.

I go to a boxing gym but can't do it consistently for various reasons, but I can always find a space to jump rope, inside or outside.

Took me a while to get decent at jumping but I progressed pretty quickly. I usually do 10x3 minute rounds of non-stop jumping with excersizes such as squats/pushups/crunches etc.. in between and then 1 minute rest before starting the circuit again.

I used to run a lot, but I don't enjoy it - can't get enough of jumping rope though.

I left my rope when I was on holiday recently and was really annoyed when I didn't have one around. I now have 3 - just in case :-D
 
I, too, am interested in jumping rope. It will be a nice addition to my current cardio regimen. However, I do want to caution that warming up with stretches and wearing proper footwear is VERY important, as the one thing you don't want to do is blow out your Achilles tendon! Very, very painful and hard to recover from.

So, I checked out the link from edco (see posts above)... and started using my boyfriend jumprope over the weekends... I think it's a weighted rope. Anyway, the actual rope part looks like it's made out of rubber... like a rubber cable. And everytime I jump rope the damn thing whips my arm or back or side!!!!:ack2:

Anyway, getting better at it now... hopefully the wounds will become fewer.... Anyone else get whipped by their skipping rope???
 
I've heard great things about skipping rope as a form of exercise. Good luck with it. Let us know how it goes!

to all of you who do it already ... how do you jump rope? the fast way with both legs up and then 'whip' the rope. or the more eased way one leg at a time?

or doesnt it matter? i just wanna do it right.. but since my condition is at level 0 i noticed when i do the fast way, i am done after 1 minute... lol
 
Yeh plastic speeds ropes can sting when they whip you. It's an incentive to get better. Don't try doing it without shoes on, tears your toes apart :-D
 
It's really just 2 different ways of skipping... variations. My endurance with the rope is minimal too, so doing the one leg at a time "jogging" jump, I feel like I can give myself a better workout. Throw in some faster intervals though, to keep it fun :)
