Romanian or Not Romanian, that is the question

Am i correct that the difference between standard deadlift and romanian deadlift are that in romanian, you dont return the weight completely to the ground?

What are the benefits of each exercise?

On the Romainian, you start at the eccentric, or top of the lift, lower the weight, hips out first, a slight bend in the knees.

For the conventional DL, the weight starts on the floor, at the start of the concentric, and you kneel down. And yes, the weight goes back on the floor.

As far as I am aware, the romainian deadlift is done with straight legs.

to stat, do a normal dead lift, then at the top of the move keep ur legs straight (but not locked, they should get only slightly bent, but dont move them), then you lower the weight just by bending your back.

You will need a much much lower weight, (about half) as u would use for a a normal dead lift. The main muscles used here are the hams, glutes and spine erectors. Please be very very carefull with this is done the wrong way will cause major damage to the spine.

Remember - dont to go down too far,
- Bend your knees when you put the weight down.
- do this exercises very slowly
- Advise anyone doing this for the 1st time to use very light weights for 20reps, for 3weeks. This will ensure your technique is good before you start upping the weight.

Nice one klarky.

still, its better to do romainian as its safer. Keeping ur legs locked strate will put huge pressure on ur knees.

Ok, lookign at replies here, things I've read elsewhere, and googling, I'm not sure anyone is giving the right answer as to 'what a romanian deadlift is'.

I always understood RDL to be having your feet very far out, like, 24-30" apart, so you only have to bend at the hips to reach the bar. now i'm not very sure.

stiff leg deadlifts are a slight bend in the knees, but you do NOT MOVE YOUR LEGS...it all comes from the hips and lower back and glutes, no quads at all.

according to M&F:
the legs don't bend, and you start with the weight up off the ground, then lower it as far as you can, keeping back straigh, and the legs don't move.

the more I google, the more I find that RDL and SLDL are the same thing.

I'm gonna ask on another forum.

Found the answer. Per the most perfect t-vixen in the world..."SLDL goes all the way down, RDLs you lean back more with your ass, but the difference is slight."

so its essentially the same movement, but SLDL goes further down, and the legs are apparently almost straight, just not locked at the knees, vs. more bent in a RDL.

and I'm apparently watching the wrong people at the gym do deadlifts while attempting to do the splits simultaneously :)

wtf? if you are able to, why wouldnt you do a romanian from the floor? i was under the impression that you went as low as possible on all of these exersices, to get more ROM

RDL=
Bar starts at hips. Hips push back, knees will bend naturally slightly, and the bar travels down the thighs and comes to rest at midshin. You then travel the bar back up the shins, up the thighs, and to rest again at the hips.

If you're doing a RDL right, you can feel the hamstrings wanting to rip off with just the bar.

Again, chin comes forward, hips go back. The bar naturally travels down the path of the legs to mid shin.
