Rob D's weight loss

Well, here I am. I guess I'll try and get my back story down.

I have been overweight for most of my life, more so since grade 8 or 9. I really don't have a set reason why I gained the weight, but I know that there was a certain point where I started to hate the fact that I was overweight, but really didn't do anything about it.

I guess it was easy for me to gain weight because of growing up with my moms excellent home cooking. It was a unwritten rule that if you wanted desert, you cleared your plate ("there's starving kids in Africa" type thing). At 12, this was something that was hard to do, but it of course got easier. My mom hated the fact that I was hungry, and would happily oblige in making me 2 sandwiches, or adding more to a plate if I wanted it. The clean your plate rule still applied though. I still clean my plate to this day, simply because I feel (and have learned) that it is a waste to have to throw out the last bit of my meal. I know that I should stop when I am satisfied, but if it tastes good, why let that extra food go to waste. I guess I just can't get over that mindset and it's something I'll be working on.

I am absolutely not blaming anything on my parents, as they have always been there for me, and are the greatest people that I have ever encountered. It was always me who asked for more, and she just cared too much to say no.

Once I got a job and making my own money, I started gaining some more weight. I could afford to eat out at fast food restaurants with my friends several times a week, and if I had a craving for something I just bought it.

I finally moved out of my parents place, and went back to school again to pick up another trade, and that leaves me where I am now. I live with 3 other younger students, who I have become great friends with. They are still living large, partying and eating what they want. I now look after myself and get groceries for myself, but it is hard being faced with constant temptation and a party that everyone is looking forward to every Friday night. I am at my highest weight of my life (250lbs) because I give in so often, and love to have lots of beers with my friends. That and I am not very active at all, and spend many an hour in front of my computer on the internet, and playing games.

I've never felt confident enough to ask a girl out, for fear she would reject the fat guy talking to her, and I guess my confidence is near nil when it comes to relationships in general. I am actually a very sociable person, and like to talk to anyone about anything, but a self confidence boost would do me wonders in my non-existent love life.

I started thinking more and more, that I'm not getting any younger, and I need to do something... now. No more half-assed attempts at dieting or working out, then eventually giving up. I don't think I have survived more than 7 days sticking to a plan. I need to do this for myself. The look on my parents and friends faces when I go back home would be awesome. I'm dedicated this time, and now that I have found these forums for support, I'm doing it.

I'll answer some of the questions on the newbie stickie:

-- How much weight do you want to lose?
70lbs. Start weight of 250lbs, and target weight of 180lbs

-- What is the time frame for reaching your target weight?
I'd like to start dropping weight now, since I'm going back home for the first time in a long time, in 2 months. However, I am realistic and I realize it may take a year or more to get to where I want to be because of the large amount to loose.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
I need to change my everyday diet. I have never eaten healthy as a choice. I just ate what I liked. I need to learn from scratch what it takes to eat good, and not feel starving all the time because of it. I am also renewing my very seldom used membership to the gym.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
My roommates are still kids fresh out of high school, so it is unrealistic to believe they would want to do this with me. Therefore I have to rely on online forms of support, mainly this forum. Hopefully with this, I'll stick with it, rather than collapsing. It is easy to quit when you have no-one to motivate you but yourself.

-- How realistic is your goal?
I have seen many many success stories from people much larger than myself, dropping 100lbs in a year, and they look and feel like a million bucks because of it. 70lbs in a year or so should be doable, and I don't believe it is unrealistic.

-- When will you start?
Monday morning. (it is Saturday afternoon right now). I am spending today writing this, and reading other peoples stories to find what works and what doesn't and what might work for me. I am also terrible at getting enough sleep in the nights, and I need to start getting to bed earlier. Monday is my date to start, fully rested and ready to go.

I am 27, 5'11", and 250 lbs. I love deep fried foods, and a big juicy steak with a side of coleslaw and fries is my idea of heaven. I have to change, and this is the beginning.

:seeya: Hi Rob! Welcome to your WL journal - and the start of your healthy new life!

You have made such a great choice deciding to take control of your health while you are still in your 20s. Come up with a definite plan for your eating and exercise, and there will be no stopping you!

best wishes
ABBA

Thanks for responding!

As a baseline record of the crap I used to eat, this is a regular day for me. Sometimes I eat more, sometimes I eat less. This was yesterdays.

Breakfast: - Blueberry and cinnamon bagel with 2 tbsp 'lite' cream cheese

Lunch: 12 chicken nuggets with 3 tbsp of sweet and sour dipping sauce

Supper: BBQ'd Hamburger with white bread, 1tbsp of ketchup, 1 tsp of mustard, 2 tbsp BBQ sauce, whole potato with bacon bits & processed cheese slice.

Snack: Hot salsa (likely 3 portions) with tortilla chips (again 3 portions).

1-1.5L of water (no pop or juice) with 0 cal flavoring packets

Grand total according to Fitday is:
2172 calories
93g of fat
241g of carbs
98g protein
4971mg sodium

Amazingly, I was actually around 1800 calories without the salsa and chips. I would have guessed I was up around 3000, but I guess not. Using the online BMR calculator, I come out to 2341.6 calories.

I'm not entirely sure how to interpret that. It looks like I should already be losing weight, eating as crappily as I am.

I'm sure there is something I'm not taking into consideration. Since I am just beginning, I think the smart thing is to aim for 1800 calories per day, real food, not the dorm-room stuff I've been eating, and hitting the gym every day for 50 mins (15min treadmill, 25min bike, 10 min free weights)

Sticking with it is the biggest deal. I plan on getting up at 5:30am every morning, so I can do my workout before breakfast, and before school. I heard that the best fat burning occurs in the morning on an empty stomach, so I'll work out first, and have breakfast after.

Am I on the right track for someone just starting out? Thanks for any and all comments.

Hi there!

I'm no expert but it looks like you have the right components for successful weight loss:
-right frame of mind
-eating plan
-exercise plan

Sticking with it is the biggest deal. I plan on getting up at 5:30am every morning, so I can do my workout before breakfast, and before school

I too am one to exercise in the morning. I hate gettin up, but know my chances of exercising later in the day dwindle with each passing hour-I can easily find other important things to do AND I having it hang over my head. I have found the 1st week the hardest . . getting up I mean. Now it is becoming a habit and getting alittle easier.

I'm not sure what caloric goal is healthy for you, but I do see a lack of fruits and veggies on your menu.

Gratz on your new commitment- stick with it and you will see results!

Keep in mind that the menu I posted is my old uncontrolled diet. Just gives me an idea on how poorly I ate. I'm going to the grocery store in a couple hours, and my fridge and cupboards are going to get an overhaul.

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit me.

Hi Rob! Just be careful of your sodium, I think we are supposed to be around 2,500, im not ure, but I think so!

Im no expert by any means!

and...welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Rob!
I'm new too, and just wanted to say GOOD LUCK !!! ;)
I love deep fried foods, and a big juicy steak with a side of coleslaw and fries is my idea of heaven. I have to change, and this is the beginning.
I have a weakness for chocolate :blush5:

I heard that the best fat burning occurs in the morning on an empty stomach, so I'll work out first, and have breakfast after.
I don't know about empty stomach, but I agree that getting up at 5:30 AM (even though it's sooooooo hard) is the safest way to ensure that the workout is done !!!!

Have a great day,
Alex :)

Thank you Jill and Wicked for visiting!

As for the working out on an empty stomach, I head it and read it in several places. If you eat first, your body spends much of the time burning off the food you just ate, and not as much from your body. Could be a myth, but I'll stick to it for now until I hear a good argument otherwise.

Well, I got up early and went to the gym this morning. Walked for 15mins for nearly a mile, and then cycled for 20 mins for just under 13 miles. I have no idea how accurate these machines are, but I'll go with what they say. After that I did 2 sets of 30 bicep curls at 15lbs.

I feel good, and I'm off to get breakfast. I'll post again at the end of the day and my calories are counted.

EDIT: Oh yea, I haven't weighed myself for awhile, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am currently at 242.5lbs! I'm going to make Fridays my weight-in days from now on.

Todays food intake.

Breakfast:
12-grain bagel and Light cream cheese
Green Chai Tea, made with skim milk and no-cal sweetener

Lunch:
Turkey sandwich with light mayo, and turkey slices (non-processed). On 2 slices of 12-Grain bread.
An Orange

Snack1:
A Banana

Supper:
Chicken Stir-Fry. (Wow olive oil has lots of calories, lol)
An Orange
Vegetable Thin Crackers

Using Fitday, and taking account of everything to the best of my ability (like making custom items using the information on the back of packages) it says I consumed the following.

1273 Calories
31g Fat
207g Carbs
50g Protein
2829.6mg Sodium

I guess I'm kind of low on my total calories, but in all honesty I wasn't all that hungry in between times. My stir-fry was pretty low in calories for a main meal (230 I calculated), so I guess I should have had something else substantial with it to bump me up to a 400-500cal meal. Maybe rice or a bit of pasta. Oh well, less in means more weight loss :)

I realize I should up it a bit, and I'll try to aim closer to 1800 tomorrow. I am a pretty big guy after all. Good night all!

Ok, another days food intake. Tried to get a few more calories this time.

Breakfast:
12-grain bagel and Light cream cheese
Green Chai Tea, made with skim milk and no-cal sweetener

Lunch:
Left-over Chicken Stir-fry
4 Gherkins
A Banana

Supper:
My first time eating out since beginning this "Lifestyle Change" lol
Subway - 6" Buffalo Chicken on wheat bread, no cheese, lots of veggies and only hot sauce (Did some research on this one to come up with the numbers. Looks like about 370 cals)

Snack1:
3/4 bag of popcorn. I only have butter lovers, so this ended up being quite a bit.(367 cals)

Snack2: 1/3 of a cucumber.

Final Tally:
1777 calories
62g Fat
238g Carbs
60g Protein
4020 mg Sodium

Well, I'm up near the 1800 I wanted, but the buttered popcorn is likely not the best way to do it. I may give the stuff I have to my roommates, and then go ahead and buy some 'Light Buttered' stuff. One thing I noticed, is that I'm fairly deficient on several nutrients, so I think I'll go ahead and purchase some 'one-a-day- multivitamins, as well as these fish oil capsules I hear so much about.

As for the gym. I repeated yesterdays routine. It is hard, but I think I can stick with it, so I'll leave it unchanged for a few weeks, 5 days a week, with weekends off.

THAT'S GREAT !!! :D Especially that there is no way that I would be able to eat anything at 5 AM !!! ;)
I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am currently at 242.5lbs!
Congrats !!! :hurray:

Wednesday went like this.

Breakfast:
Green Chai Tea, made with skim milk and no-cal sweetener
Maple Mini-wheats with skim milk

Lunch:
Leftover 6" Buffalo Chicken Subway sub (see previous day)
A Banana
1 Cup of Green Jello (I love jello)

Supper:
Chicken and veggie stir-fry with olive oil

Snack:
Peanut butter and banana sandwich, on 12-grain bread.

Totals:
1802 calories
48g Fat
281g Carbs
70g Protein
3197mg Sodium

I got up to 1800 pretty quick, and I have the rest of the night to look forward to. I have carrot sticks, celery and cucumber as free calories to get me to bedtime though. Gym every day this week too. I haven't deviated yet! (3 whole days is the biggest commitment I've had to date, lol!)

I tried to be positive in the beginning, but I'm starting to realize that I will actually be able to stick with this. Hell, I even turned down gooey cinnamon buns today! I feed great, and I'm struggling to force myself not to weigh in till Friday. Should be interesting!

I'm starting to realize that I will actually be able to stick with this
Awesome! I think the beginning usually is the toughest part of weightloss. If you can stick with it a week or 2, you end up greating new/healhty habits so it soon dosn't feel like work!

Don't peek! Let me know what the scale sez . . On Friday!

Hehe, will do!

Yea, I guess they say it takes 21 days to start a habit, so I have a ways to go yet, but for me, the first few days were tough, and I'm proving to myself that I can stick with it. Thanks for the encouragement! I love this place.

Have you ever tried almond butter? I've never been a huge fan of peanut butter but it seemed like as soon as I started dieting it was the first thing I missed  weird. Anyway, yeah, almond butter is about the same cals and protein as pb but without all the sugar, and its actually kinda tasty. And I have this olive oil spray- enuf to make things "stick" but a lot less cals than the actual oil.
Just a few things that have helped me :) Good luck- and congrats on the 8lbs the first week! I'm jealous lol.

Well, the scale treated me well today. After not really seeing any loss in the mirror, my scale treated me to a sight of 237.5lbs! Thats a 5 lb weight loss in 5 days! I'm stoked! This rate is likely because I just started, and will slow down, but any weight lost is less I have to carry around. As far as I remember, I have never lost weight, ever. I have always gained, sometimes slow, and sometimes faster. Sure puts me in a good mood! Lol.

Also, I'm still tracking everything I eat with fitday, but I think I'm just burning up posts by posting it, so I may leave it out for awhile. 1800 calories a day with my current workout, is sure working for me though.

Jess939:
Almond butter? Sounds weird lol. I love my peanut butter, so I don't think I can cut that out completely, but I have cut back a lot. Next time I'm grocery shopping, I may just have to give almond butter a try. Who knows, I may even like it better lol. Thanks for the suggestion!

you can get peanut butter without added sugar - in fact theingredients are anything but peanuts on the jar I probably wouldnt eat it anyhow...

Natural peanut butter is quite tasty and doesn't have the hydrogenated whatsists that the Skippys and the Jifs and the peter pans do.. And tastes better too - and many of them you do n't have to stir in the oil anymore..

Gratz on the loss!
Keep it up!

I'm still tracking everything I eat with fitday, but I think I'm just burning up posts by posting it

I use a similiar program thru selfmagazine, and just copy & paste it to my diary. Personally, I like to post what I'm eating on these forums to get feedback if needed.

Alright, my first weekend. Drinking has lots of calories...

I knew I was going to be drinking a fair bit, as we had a big exam friday, and we had lots of people coming over for a party. I picked a fairly low cal drink, white rum and diet coke, 65 calories per drink (assuming 1 oz of alcohol and 12 oz of coke).

As a bit of a preventative measure, I lowered my calorie intake for the day, and only had 1165 calories up until the evening.

By morning, I had drank a 26oz bottle of rum with 2L of diet coke for 1690 calories, and one damn good night! Total for the day was therefore 2855!

Today I'll cut down to 1200ish calories today, and tomorrow as well. That will get me back on track. I don't see this as too much of a setback, simply because you need to let loose sometimes. I don't foresee myself giving up alcohol, so I need to take measures to deal with the caloric intake, like I'm doing this weekend.

When is someone going to invent cal-free alcohol? They'd be millionaires!
