Road Trips - how to eat

Okay, I have to deal with some four and a half hour bus trips to family with a short gap at a road cafe that has loads of fattening and pricey foods. There are non-fattening foods there, but if the fatty foods have an extra $1.00 added to most of their prices, the healthy foods have an extra $2.00 to $3.00. The reason is that it's the only road cafe for most of the journey as there are few towns on that route. Not only this, but Australia gets quite hot sometimes and salad sandwhiches can end up looking quite unappetising after a few hours of heat-struck veggies and meat looks most unsafe...

So this is probably a more extreme example of trouble in finding good 'trip foods' compared to what most people deal with but I'm sure you've had similar experiences. Any tips, hints and advice? I'd rather not just go without and we're not allowed to take fruit or veggies across the border into the Riverland (though that doesn't mean I can't eat it on the bus beforehand).
 
Have you tried some of these ? I think they are a bit more expensive but are usually healthier and tastier than the usual "trip foods". :cool:
 
I would take my own. You can make a sandwich using whatever lowfat options you want, chop up some fruit or veggies, etc. Whenever I did have to stop somewhere on my last big trip, I stuck to soup.
 
Sorry, I guess I missed the last sentence in your post. I guess if you can't take anything, eat before. 4.5 hours isn't that long if you've got a full stomach.

Also, any restaurant/cafe should be able to make food the way you want it (no margarine or mayo, etc.) Be picky.:)
 
Could you have some nuts or dried fruit on the bus before you cross the border? At the stop maybe you could grab a low fat cereal bar or a sandwich? Bring some water with you to help you keep full! But not so much that it makes the journey uncomfortable!!!
