Rissa's Weight Loss Journey

Starting Weight: 217.4 (December 27, 2011)

Mini-Goal # 1: 200.0

Mini Goal # 2: 180.0

Mini Goal # 3: 160.0

Goal Weight: 140.0

Height: 5'4"

A Little About Me: I am 27 years old. I have two children, ages 5 and 3 so the baby weight excuse is no longer working. I knew I needed to lose some weight but I really didnt know how bad my weight had gotten. My kids got Nintendo DS's for Christmas and they were taking pics of me, and when I saw the pics, I wanted to cry. I looked awful! I always shy away from pictures because of how self conscious I feel. I went through our family photos last night, and I found maybe 3 of me with the kids. From the photos, you couldnt tell my kids had a mom.

We are going to Disney World at the beginning of July 2012 and I want to be in the pictures, I want to be apart of the memories, but I dont want to look like a fat blob.

I have very little self control when it comes to food. I will cheat for food I dont even really like when the cravings hit. So my goal is to keep bad food out of the house completely. I am planning on taking a low carb approach because when I eat carbs, I have excessive weight gains. So lots of veggies and lean meats. Moderate amounts of fruit.

I am hoping posting here will make me work harder and feel more accountable.

Hi Rissa,

I am beginning again today as well and found that we have alot in common, so I know we can be a great support to each other!!!

I am a little older (39 yikes), a few pounds heavier (229lbs), have a couple more kids (4) and instead of Disney, I am getting married in June, but otherwise your profile sounds very familiar! I would love to be of any help I can be!!

I am so proud of us for taking this first step!!

Have a blessed day!!

Laticia

Hey Laticia!

Since we do have similar starting points and goals, it would be great to keep up with each other. I really feel like trying to help keep someone else on track would help me stay on track. I also have a bit of a competitive side so your losses could help fuel mine.

Are you following any particular diet plan or just trying to generally eat better and exercise?

Like I said before, I am doing low carb. I also plan on exercising. I have treadmill, elliptical and weights at home so I will be using those. I am also planning on doing the Beach Body Brazil Butt Lift workout DVD's. I used to have a super great butt, but as I have gotten fatter, it seems to have gotten wider and flat.

Congragulations on your June wedding! Definitely a reason to lose weight. I hope that there is somehow I can help you get there.

What is gonna be the hardest foods for you to give up? I have some great recipes that I used in 2010 to lose 50 pounds... not sure how I allowed myself to gain the weight back :-(

Good morning!!

I completely agree!! I am hoping that the support I can give others will keep me accountable to myself as well.

I think I have every different book/diet and program that has ever been made, but I have been rereading BODY FOR LIFE for women again. which is also low carb. I know the calories, carbs and points of pretty much every single food item there is and I know how to eat.......its just staying away from SUGAR and staying on track and motivated that is my demon. I also have to make the time to exercise, which is a big problem as well. I am not much of a morning person and tend to stay up late many nights just to get stuff done around the house. I have to be at work by 7:30am and with the kids extracurricular activities I really need to make my schedule of when and what I am going to do each day so that I know what must be done beforehand. I also have a treadmill and elliptical here at the house.....so we definately need to cooridinate our exercise!!! I have thought about buying the Brazil Butt Lift many times!!! I am very curvy and my problem area is my hips, thighs and butt. Another one that a friend of mine is doing is the Chalean and she looks amazing!! As I write this, my fiance is doing P90X behind me. He is in amazing shape and its a little intimidating to think of me doing that with him since he has been doing it so long. I would love any recipies that you would like to share!!! I am always looking for something new to try. I think that is one reason that I lose motivation is I get tired of eating the same thing all the time.

Are you on pintrest?? If not, you need to check it out!! They have some great motivational pictures and saying that I have posted around to remind me its a lifestyle change and not something that is just a 6 week change.

On a personal note, Have you been to Disney before? Are your children boys or girls or both? 5 and 3 is such great ages!! Loved those times.

Great talking to you!!!

Have a great day!!

Hey Laticia!

Hope you had a good day today! I might have to look into the Body for Life book. I do the same thing, I pretty much know the net carbs of everything but sometimes I just cant control myself. It makes me really sad because I will binge on sweet stuff that I dont really like for that sugar rush. Its crazy.

Making time can be hard. I am a full time college student. Allie is my 5 year old and she started Kindergarten this year, I thought it would give me more time while she was in school, but it did the opposite because I didnt realize how much my son Keegan needed her, so he has become extremely clingy since she started school. He has stopped taking naps. My first priority is my kids, then homework, and then my health and exercise and diet. Then on top of all that I have the army wife duties.

My husband is extremely fit as well. He does the P90x too and its just so easy for him. Very intimidating. Plus he works out every morning at work and then works at when he comes home at night. I have made a rule for myself. I cant watch any of my favorite TV shows unless I am exercising. I like music, but it never gets my mind off working out. When I lost that 50 pounds last year, I would watch a movie and if it was really good, I could get through 90 minutes on the elliptical without really noticing the burning in my legs. So I figure if I want to watch Bones or Criminal Minds or whatever, I will DVR it and watch it during my workout the next day. We will see how that goes. After Brazil Butt Lift, I am gonna do Chalean or Turbo Fire. But I will definitely do it when my husband is not home because if I am gonna look like a fool then I would rather be alone! lol They are by the same instructor. I plan on doing the treadmill and/or elliptical monday-friday and brazil butt lift everyday but sunday.

I am thinking we should have a weigh in day. Maybe mondays? I think monday weigh ins would maybe help me get through the weekend without cheating if I know I am accountable on Monday. Maybe share measurments every other week. What do you think?

As far as recipes, I found a really good website for low carb dishes. I dont think I can post the link on here, but maybe I can message it to you. I will try that, let me know if you get it. She has so many things on there that you dont have to eat the same thing everyday. I also like watching videos by a guy names bowulf on youtube. His story is very motivating as well. I am amazed at how some of these low carbers have found such great replacements for high carb dishes. I hate cauliflower, but I love the cauliflower mashed potatoes. We have replaced spaghetti noodles with spaghetti squash. We have replaced lasagna noodles with a creamed spinach mixture. We have replaced taco shells with baked shredded cheese that you can form into taco shells or even a bowl for taco salads. We have replaced flour with a crushed pork rind and parmesan cheese mixture. The pork rind thing took me a long time to try cuz I hate pork rinds but its amazing for fried chicken! Also, I dont think I could get all that water down without crystal light. I will pop a bottle in the freezer and then crush it all up, and its like a sweet yummy slurpee.

What good tips have you learned trying out all the different diets?

My husband grew up going to Disney every summer when they visited his grandmother, my family didnt really take vacations so I have never been. The kids are at an age now where they can both enjoy it so I am super excited to go. How old are your 4 kids? I couldnt even imagine having 4. 2 is such a handfull!

Hello!!!

Sorry we had company all day today and just didn't have time to write back until now. I am hoping to spend some time tomorrow really going through those websites and recipes!! I can't wait, thanks so much!! One of my absolute favorite recipes is a weight watchers taco soup. It is delicious!! I really like spicy foods so anything that I can put peppers or salsa on I love. Grilled chicken breast with salsa, omelets with spinach, bell peppers and salsa, etc....I also really like the Luna bars when I need some protein and kinda a sugar fix. Water is probably my main strength. I love water and feel terrible if I dont have my water during the day. I have always said that I would be as big as a barn if I was addicted to coke or dr. pepper. It has never been any sort of temptation. NOW....KOOL-AID on the other hand....I could drink the whole thing!! So we just don't make it much anymore. I will pull some of the recipes and email them to you.

I am exactly the same way, I will eat something that I really don't even care for just for the sugar craving!

Mondays are great for me. I have to weigh myself daily just to keep myself in line. Once I stop stepping on the scale everyday I completely lose that accountability. Do you want to start with measurements and weight this coming monday the 2nd?

WOW....army wife huh? Thats wonderful!! Whats your major? I could be a professional student....absolutely love college!! I have an 18yr son, who just started college, a 14 son in the 8th grade, a 13 yr old son in the 7th grade and a 11 yr old daughter who is in the 5th grade. They all are very active and play every sport there is, and usually on multiple teams.....so for example right now we have 4 different basketball teams going on. But, nothing compares to the spring when baseball is going on.....WOW....we are running in 15 different directions!! I took the kids to disney a couple of years ago and we loved it so much!! I could go back any time. This is where my biggest problem comes in. Its so easy for me to run through a drive-thru and pick up something on the way to a ball game or get something at the concession stand because I didn't plan well enough and then by the time we get home, baths, homework and maybe start some laundry and dishes....I am so tired that I no interest in getting on the treadmill or doing something with a video. I am not much of a tv watcher, except for the news in the morning while I get ready or HGTV. OH....I almost forgot, I did find a website that has tons of workout videos on it but its in Chinese! But at least you can view it to see if you like it first. The website is http://tumblrgym.tumblr.com/. They also have lots of motivational tools.

OK....I am heading to bed.....THANKS for everything!! I really appreciate it!!

Have a great day!!!

Sorry it took so long to respond. We went to my moms for the New Years and it was just so hectic with all the kids running around. I barely had time to breathe let alone get online. All the grandkids were there and there is only about a 9 month gap in between each one so there was 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and my 12 year old niece.

My major is Healthcare Management. I really like school too.

So I am starting back on Atkins today. My mom had a christmas redo since I wasnt home for christmas. She had the tree, presents for my kids, and even redid the meal. Needless to say, I decided to put off my diet until today so that I could eat. I am paying for that choice because I gained quite a bit of weight. I am now 222.2.

So I am thinking I will get my diet under control this week, and start working out on Monday (jan 9) and start my weigh ins and measurments then as well. Although I will be also weighing myself everyday.

Day 1

Breakfast: Atkins Cafe Caramel Shake

Lunch: Spinach Salad w/ Ranch. Tuna w/pickles and mayo. Homemade cheese chips to scoop tuna.

Dinner: Steak and Broccoli. Maybe cauliflower mashed potatoes (if cauli is still fresh)

Snacks: Pizza Chips, Sugar Free Peach Jello

Water: Trying to get 110 oz in. (Doctor said you should drink half your actual body weight)

This is the plan for today!! I hope you're still on plan and doing well! If not, get your butt back on track ;-) Looking forward to hearing from you. I am also messaging you a link to a challenge that I joined that seems to have quite a few people participating!

Day 2

I am down 2.2 pounds... weighing in at 220.0 this morning.

I am hoping to get a workout in sometime today. Hoping for at least 45 minutes on the treadmill.

Breakfast: Atkins Shake

Lunch: Ham and cheese in lettuce wrap

Dinner: Salmon. Sauteed mushrooms and snow peas.

Snacks: sugar free jello

I feel like today is going to be a great day. I just need to push through the cravings instead of giving in.

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years with your family!!

GREAT JOB!!!

I completely understand......As I said earlier, Time is my excuse!!! However, I have done really good until today. I have been walking everyday for the last week and watching what I ate last week. Really started with the food this week. I weighed in on Monday at 229.9, Tuesday at 227.? and this morning at 224. So I can really tell that the 45 min of walking and the yoga that I am doing are helping, but I am so drained today that I just want a bath and get into bed. Am going to try to pull off another 45 min tonight before I pass out!!!

I have been eating a grapefruit with a little bit of brown sugar and ginger for breakfast, If you like grapefruit this is wonderful!!! Put it in the oven on Broil for about 5 min...the juice and a little bit of sugar kinda make the top crusty and its sooooo good. It also kinda takes away the wangy tartness of the grapefruit.

Almonds, luna bar or 100 calorie fiber one bar for snack

piece of grilled salmon or chicken with some baby carrots, bell peppers or cucumbers with fat free italian dressing for lunch

then had big salad and 1/2 piece of pizza last night for dinner..............Tonight had a piece of fried catfish and 2 hushpuppies. That was after I ate a hand full of gummy worms during afterschool...STRESS really effects my cravings!!! I totally had to fight off the ice cream and cookies that was calling my name!!! Decided that the gummy worms were probably the least evil of the bunch. I have got to sit down and really plan out my menus!!!! I did download a cookbook that had 300 recipes under 300 calories (per serving, I assume) Now just gotta keep myself from eating the entire recipe.

I have been pretty good with the water (4+ bottles) but I am not getting anywhere close to drinking 1/2 my weight!! I have heard that also, and I like water, but that sounds like a ton!!!! I would be in the bathroom all day long.

I haven't had time to sit down and do measurements yet. I really want to do that soon. I also want to mark all over my before pictures. I did download Ali Vincent's book. Believe it, Be it. She was one of the Biggest Loser's winners a few years ago.

Well, if I am going to get anything done, I gotta get off of the computer and get going.

THANKS!! and Have a great day tomorrow!!

Keep up the good work!!

Starting Weight: 222.2 (1/3) Today's Weight: 216.8 Loss: 5.4 lbs

I knew yesterday was an awesome day! I lost 3.2 lbs overnight! I am sure it was water weight, but that's still a big drop in one night... for me, anyway! I was 100% on plan yesterday and my body rewarded me! I am only 16.8 pounds away from my first mini goal and for whatever reason, 16 sounds so much better than 22. I weighed 217.4 when I went to my moms house for New Years, so I have finally made it below that!

Day 3 Plan
B: Atkins Shake
L: Lemon pepper salmon. Spinach salad. Sauteed mushrooms.
D: Undecided...
S: Peach SF jello, pizza roll
Water Goal: At least 108 oz.
Exercise: Hoping for 45 minutes on treadmill

Today will probably be a hectic day for me. Between my son and I, I feel like I spent all day in the bathroom yesterday. Trying to potty train him and I drank 128 oz of water yesterday. I need to finish getting the house cleaned... that means bathrooms and kids rooms and laundry... yay!

Mini Goal #1: 200 lbs {ONLY 16.8 Pounds Away!}

Classes start back on Monday, Jan 9 and "Aunt Flo" is expected on Tuesday, Jan 10 so the plan for the rest of the week is to keep working on potty training with Keegan. Get the house spotless so that when school starts, I can just pick up. I am going to make a schedule that details my day. I seem to run better on a schedule... it's one of the things I miss about working. I have to include exercise, meal planning, couponing, school work, cleaning, cooking, walking the dogs, and etc. Hopefully I can get that done today. I like when I complete something and feel accomplished. I have been feeling that for the past two days so I am trying to keep it going!

The holidays were great Hope yours were too. It was awesome watching my kids play with their cousins and being able to spend time with my mom and brothers! The one downside to the army life is being away from them. We got really lucky with this assignment and are only 5 hours away. CONGRATULATIONS! on your 5 pound loss! So proud of you! You're doing a great job keeping up with the exercising as well! It's okay to take a day off when you're really exhausted though so don't beat yourself up if you miss a night.

I haven't done my measurments yet either. I need to do them today or tomorrow before I start getting period bloat. I used to go to a nutritionist and she said drinking 4 oz of grapefruit juice (Ruby Red LIGHT) every morning was vital to a diet. That was the only change she made to Atkins, otherwise the diet she had me on was strict Atkins. She said it helped boost the metabolism. I lost 50 pounds in two months. It has alot of sugar and carbs in it though so I am going to see how my weightloss is going without it and if I feel like I need a boost, I might start drinking it again. She also suggested taking cayenne and cinnamon capsules as well as vitamin b complex pills to boost metabolism. I was talking to a friend of mine about it and she said she also saw that on Dr. Oz not too long ago, so I may get some more and put them up for when my weight loss starts slowing down.

I have been staying away from nuts. I can't eat almonds until I am in a maintenance phase because when I do eat them, I dont seem to lose weight. I am 99% sure they are the reason I was stalled the last go round. Sounds like your body is handling them just fine though so thats great!

If your having pizza cravings, I have a suggestion. Take 2-4 oz shredded mozarella and put it on parchment paper in the shape of a circle. Heat in microwave until the outside starts to brown and the middle is melted and bubbly. Blot some of the grease away with paper towel. Dice up some pepperoni and veggies of your choice (saute or heat up in microwave if you want) Put them on the melted cheese circle and roll up like a cigar. Dip in low carb pizza sauce. I have been using ragu pizza sauce in the glass jar. So good! As the cheese starts to dry out, it gets a crunchy chewy kind of texture that mimics eating a slice of pizza. It was so good!

I have never eaten cabbage except in KFC coleslaw but I am venturing out of my comfort zone and am planning on buying a head the next time I go to the store. I keep hearing about this dish called "low carb crack slaw". Google it and check it out. Anyway, it has veggies, ground beef and cabbage. It's similar to a stir fry I guess, not really a slaw but it seems like a very popular dish. Even people who dont like cabbage, like it.

Low carb has introduced me to fresh veggies I never ate before.

Spaghetti Squash (Made with chicken parmesan is AMAZING)

Aspargus

Snow Peas

Eggplant (I will only eat it sauteed and ground up and mixed into something else. I dont like the texture, but the taste reminds me of mushrooms)

Onions

Mushrooms (LOVE!)

Broccoli

Spinach

Before low carb, I would only eat lettuce and cucumbers.

Anyway, cant wait to hear about your day, food and weight loss... Keep up the good work!

Found this article today and thought I would share. It's a list of metabolism boosters. The nutrtionist who suggested the cinnamon and cayenne and grapefruit juice to boost metabolism might have been onto something.

Cayenne Pepper
Oxford Polytechnic Institute proved that cayenne pepper stimulates the metabolism approximately 20%. It not only stimulates the body's metabolic rate, but also cleans fat out of the arteries. Cayenne pepper also adds great zip to foods such as spaghetti sauce and soups.

Salsa
Salsa was proven at the Oxford Institute to stimulate the metabolism approximately 15 to 20%. It's also America's number 1 condiment now. You can throw it on anything from baked potatoes and scrambled eggs to beans and even veggies. It's going to help because it is a natural thermogenic food that increases your metabolism. Of course, the hotter the better, but only choose what best suits your taste buds.

Hot Peppers
Dr. Henry at Oxford University proved that hot peppers were very effective at stimulating the metabolism by adding just 3 grams of chili peppers to a meal consisting of 766 calories. The peppers led to what Dr. Henry calls "a diet-induced thermo effect.â€

"It doesn't take much", he says, "but I caution that you must listen to your taste buds."

Chili Sauce / Mustard
British investigators added about 3/5 of a teaspoon of hot chili sauce or ordinary mustard to a meal, and the hot stuff caused average metabolism in 12 subjects to shoot up 25%! The subjects burned off an extra 45 calories in the next 3 hours. Mustard and hot sauces such as Tabasco, caused one person to burn off 76 calories!

Ice Water
High water intake reduces fat deposits and rids the body of toxins. Simply drinking eight 16 oz. glasses of water throughout the day, cooled to 40 Fahrenheit, will burn 200 calories; that's equivalent to running 3 miles! Ice water will burn more calories since your metabolism will increase to warm the water to body temperature. It is also very effective for reducing cravings. If you're not a water fan, we suggest you experiment with purified, spring or reverse osmosis water. If you're still not convinced, add a little juice for flavor. Don't drink Ice Water with meals as it dilutes digestive enzymes. A little warm water or herb tea is a good choice then.

Green Tea (Iced or Hot)
Studies have shown that green teas that contain both Cannatic Extract and Gymnemic Acid, reduce absorption of sugar into the blood, and lessen the craving for sweets. More importantly, green tea inhibits the action of amylase, a primary digestive enzyme of carbohydrates and therefore, moves food more quickly through the digestive system, raising the metabolism quicker, and burning more calories. Green tea is best consumed before a meal to aid digestion. Other advantages include links to cancer prevention and health benefits for people with diabetes.

Apple Cider Vinegar Drink
An excellent fat burner, apple cider vinegar assists in the reduction of excess weight. Make a potent cocktail consisting of: 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (unpasturized) in a glass of pure water. Take twice daily. Organic apple cider vinegar has the best flavor. Apple cider vinegar has received glowing reports from both Patricia Bragg MD, Ph.D. and C. Scott. If a person who is too stout takes 1 teaspoon in a glass of water first thing in the morning and then during one other meal, he/she observes that in 2 months his/her waistline has been reduced by 1 inch. In 4 months, 2 inches and so on. Inch loss is evident but it does not always reduce weight.

The cider vinegar treatment will allow surplus fat to gradually disappear, whether it is a double chin or love handles. It is best to drink for 2-3 weeks, then go off for a week, so your body does not become immune to it. Works great for plateaus! Do not use this drink if you have Candidias.

Thermogenic Cocktail
According to a group of Oxford researchers, hot spices can boost your metabolism by an extra 25%! A thermogenic cocktail, for instance, cayenne pepper, will assist your body not only by burning off calories, but will also give you more energy. An excellent thermogenic cocktail is a glass of V-8 or tomato juice sprinkled with cayenne and tobassco. Stir with a celery stick. Now your body is going to be cremating calories.

Not all fat burning foods have to be hot, though. Vegetables (preferably raw) and most fruits also increase your metabolism. Okay, maybe you haven't been too keen on veggies in the past, but many of them are very tasty and some fruits are as sweet as candy. All vegetables are good, but the most effective for flushing out the system are the following:

Cabbage
Red or green cabbage should be shredded, raw or steamed. Start including cabbage in your diet as it is a longevity food. Studies in the United States, Greece and Japan have shown that people who eat a lot of cabbage are less likely to develop colon cancer, and also have a lower incidence of disease-related death. Try coleslaw instead of green salad with your next meal.

Celery
Celery takes more energy from the body to absorb and digest than the calories it provides. Celery has also long been used as a nerve tonic; it's a good, crunchy raw vegetable to chew on if you are stressed out. Celery will calm your nerves, help flush fat out of your system, and make you sleep better. Try eating celery with low-fat yogurt dip.

Brussel Sprouts
If you are a fan of these mini cabbages, you are in luck. Dr. Wattenburg's research concluded that brussel sprouts are an ultra-nutritious vegetable, extremely high in vitamin C and richer in protein than any other vegetable. Dr. Wattenburg recorded that healthy young people given a diet rich in brussel sprouts and cabbage improved the functioning of their metabolic systems.

Broccoli and Cauliflower
Both broccoli and cauliflower rank number 1 as America's favorite vegetable, according to a poll by the Epcot Center. Your bones will love them, as they are one of the few calcium-containing vegetables. A cup of broccoli provides over 150 mg of calcium. Broccoli and cauliflower are both great in stir-fries or casseroles.

Lemon or Vinega
A small amount of vinegar or lemon juice (1 tablespoon), because of its acidity has a powerful slowing effect on stomach emptying, thereby slowing down the rate of starch digestion. Have a glass of water with lemon in the morning. It's a great way to keep your blood sugar balanced.

Vinaigrette Dressing
A vinaigrette dressing (1 tablespoon vinegar and 2 teaspoons of oil) with your salad can lower the blood sugar response to the whole meal by up to 30 percent. Best vinegars for this are red or white wine vinegars.

Apples
A low-glycemic, low-insulin food loaded with pectin, apples leave you feeling fuller, longer. According to Dr. James Anderson, apples prevent hunger pains by guarding against dangerous swings or drops in your blood sugar levels. An average-sized apple provides only 81 calories and lowers blood sugar and blood pressure. Because of their high fiber content, apples are also a heart-healthy food.

Grapefruit
Grapefruit is not a diet myth. It actually helps dissolve fat and high cholesterol, as proven at the University of Florida, by Dr. James Cerda. Grapefruits are loaded with over 15 grams of pectin, which helps curb your appetite by expanding in the body and making you feel fuller, longer. It is rich in natural galacturonic acid, which adds to the potential to fight fat and cholesterol. Try sprinkling cinnamon on your grapefruit to reduce the tart taste, or a little fructose if you have a sweet tooth. For a unique taste, sprinkle the grapefruit with cinnamon and broil for a few minutes; it makes a nice appetizer for a meal.

Berries
Berries are one of the best rate reduction foods. They have a natural fructose to satisfy your cravings for sweets, but enough fiber so you can absorb fewer calories than you eat. British researchers found that the high content of insoluble fiber, found in most berries and vegetables, reduces the absorption of calories from foods enough to promote weight loss, without hampering your nutrition. Berries are also an excellent source of potassium which is effective for your blood pressure control. Enjoy berries; they make a great dessert when topped with low-fat yogurt. In the summer, drink fresh berry juice with a protein powder, for a light snack.

Due to their high glycemic measure, fruits to consume only occasionally include:
Apricots - Raisins - Watermelon - Papaya - Bananas - Mango

In large quantities, these fruits drive your blood sugar to the sky, but they are fine to mix in with a salad or be eaten with other foods, to help neutralize the glycemic effect.

On the other hand, the following foods actually slow digestion and absorption for a more balanced blood sugar level. The fiber from these fruits also binds with some fat to prevent its absorption. High fiber foods are beneficial for speeding up bowel transit time and to taking some stress off the liver as less toxins form, allowing the body to metabolize more efficiently.

Apples - Berries - Cherries - Grapes - Grapefruit - Oranges - Peaches - Pears

Fatty Fish
Fighting fat with fat may sound paradoxical, but not all fats make people fat. Omega 3 fatty acids, found in salmon, mackerel, tuna and other fatty fish, can increase the metabolic rate, rid the body of excess fluids and increase energy levels. Dr. Joel Krener, University of Florida, discovered that daily supplements of EPA (found in health food stores) brought dramatic relief for inflammation and stiff joints from rheumatoid arthritis. Other essential fats for a healthy metabolism are Omega 6 fatty acids, especially Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). Good sources are evening primrose oil, borage seed oil and black current oil. If you are not a fish lover, fish oil capsules and flaxseed (either in seed form or as an oil) are great sources of Omega 3 essential fat. In fact, flaxseed may play a role in the prevention of heart disease and cancer. You can also use flaxseed oil as a salad dressing.

Soup
Forget the salad before a meal; have soup instead. A study by Dr. John Foreyt of Baylord College of Medicine, found that people who consumed a bowl of soup before lunch or dinner lost more weight than dieters who didn't. This is because soup fills you up better than salad, since salad generally consists of 75% water.

Oatmeal
Oats drive down cholesterol. 23 out of 25 studies prove that a large bowl of oatmeal did the job. Oatmeal is a great, long chain molecule food that expands in the body and makes you feel fuller, longer. Oatmeal also releases glucose into the blood stream, slowly but surely. Add buckwheat to your bowl and you'll get a double whammy.

Pumpernickel Bread -
Studies at Michigan State University show that some breads reduce the appetite and others did just the opposite. The reason for these study results is that white and whole-wheat varieties are high on the glycemic index, and elevate the blood sugar greatly, which in turn stimulates fat production in storage.

Breads that are dense, high fiber breads, do just the opposite. Researchers found that subjects who ate dark, high fiber breads, compared to those who ate white bread, were less hungry on a daily basis and lost five pounds in just two months without doing anything else differently.

A key to choosing dark breads, such as pumpernickel, mixed grains and some whole-wheat's, is that the more chewing the bread requires, the more density and fiber it contains. If the bread melts in your mouth, it is a high glycemic food

It does sound hot! I don't like spicy so if they don't have it in capsule form, I will be skipping it! Glad you found the article helpful! I know the cayenne, cinnamon, omega and apple cider vinegar come in capsule form.

Hi

Sorry its been a couple of days since I posted.....CRAZY, as always. Sounds like you are doing WONDERFUL!!! and the idea for pizza sound great. Can't wait to get some time to try it. I am just one of those people that if I don't have it planned out totally the night before, we end up stopping and getting whatever is the easiest (which is always high is fat, calories and/or carbs). So it was pizza the other night. I ended up fixing me a huge salad and had it ate by the time the pizza was here. I really wasn't even craving it, it just smelled wonderful.

Hummus has become my new favorite food!!! I made a chicken wrap today with some spicy hummus and it was so YUMMY!!! I know you don't like spicy but I have ate a couple different kinds and they were all great and I pulled up some recipies and SO EASY!! I am def going to try and make some next weekend!!

The crack slaw looks great. I like cabbage and I have made a similar dish with turkey sausage, it is delish!!! I like most veggies, its just finding the time to cook or recipe that everybody else likes.

Thanks for all the other info!!! The other book I really like is You on a diet by Dr. Oz. It talks a little about everything, how your brain works and stress, energy, exercise, recipies, just overall good health....and I love Dr. Oz.

How is your exercising going?? I have done ok....missed Thursday because I was so TIRED that I crashed and last night had a date night!! So today was back at it on the treadmill for 45 min. Im trying to build up speed so Im up to 3.8mph now. Sunday night going to do Yoga and walk. I did yoga last sunday and really liked it. I probably looked like a fool but it definately worked my muscles. I also need to figure something out for some resistance training. Not really too sure what to do so need to do some research.

My goals for the coming week:

1. Stay on track!! Its looking like it could be an extra CRAZY week with my daughter having one basketball game, one son having 2 games and the other son having 4 for sure and possibly having 2 more if they win out in the tournament. Along with that is 3 home High School Basketball games that I sell Ice cream at and a pancake dinner for the science club fundraiser!! I think that is 12 basketball games next week!!! YIKES!!

2. Get Sleep

3. Keep exercising!!

Well, I better get off of here and get a few things done. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! Your doing great!!

Today is day 6 and I am down 7.8 lbs.

I haven't had any issues staying on plans. I am very thankful I haven't had any cravings. I have decided right now that I am gonna definitely do induction for 6 weeks. So 5 more weeks left. Depending on cravings and weight loss by that point, I may stay on longer.

Water intake has been great. I have drank at least 128 oz everyday! I really owe it to the 64 oz gatorade bottle. My intake was barely 64 oz before I started using this bottle. Fill it halfway with ice and then water and it stays cold to the last drop. Only have to refill it twice a day!

I started taking those supplements on Friday. I am taking vitamin b complex, cinnamon, cayenne, apple cider vinegar and fish oil. I have been using ketostix to test my level of keotones. I have always landed on small, a lighter pink... in ketosis but not heavily. Yesterday it registered the darkest pink and today it registered dark purple. That means that my body is in super fat burning mode and the only new thing I've added is the supplements. I am gonna keep taking them and using the strips to see if they keep registering that well.

Exercising has been almost non existent. I walked on the treadmill for a mile on saturday because I really wanted to watch one of my shows. It's the only one I've watched since starting on my diet so I have been able to keep my deal with myself so far. I made a goal for myself. I want to walk at least 208 miles in 2012. That's 4 miles a week. Then adding in my beach body program and I should be good with exercise. I just need to get on top of it.

I tried a new veggie yesterday... BRUSSELS SPROUTS! They have always grossed me out. I have only had them boiled and they were just mushy and nasty. Bad childhood memory. I found a recipe for a casserole. It had onions and brussels sprouts. You take some heavy cream and shredded cheddar and mix it all up. Top with cooked, diced bacon and black pepper. Cover with foil and put in 375 degree oven for 35 minutes. Remove foil last 5 minutes to let the bacon crisp back up. It was delicious. I will try steaming them next time and just doing butter and pepper and seeing how I like them. My next veggie will be the cabbage I have sitting in my fridge. I am definitely gonna try the crack slaw (recipe at bottom). In other veggie news, I have found a way to eat tomatoes. I hate hate tomatoes but a friend of mine who just started Atkins hates all veggies except lettuce and cucumbers and she made a salad dressing that was awesome. It uses half a cup of contadina diced tomatoes, 2 oz of onion, italian dressing and ranch dressing. (It's 1 serving for a big salad) She put it on top of lettuce, cucumbers and mozzarella cheese. Anyway, the point is it was delicious and you can use the tomatoes for your veggie carbs. On days where it's dinner time and I haven't met my 12 net veggie carbs, I can whip that up. I probably wont use it that often since canned veggies have a higher sodium content and I dont want to bloat.

I made half a batch of cream cheese muffins that I was planning on keeping in the freezer for when I did have a sweet craving. Just take one out and let it thaw a bit. According to all the reviews, it was very similar to cheesecake. The recipe for a FULL batch is at the bottom if anyone is interested in making them. They weren't too bad. They do have a cheesecake flavor but I tasted the egg. They will be better when I can add blueberries or nuts to them. My husband loved them though. I ate one and when I woke up the next morning, the other 5 were gone. He had eaten them and stayed up late playing his video games.

Personal stuff... Potty training my soon has been brutal. He's only had about 4 accidents a day. All but one were pee. The brutal part is the only thing I can give him to make him want to use the toilet instead of peeing in his underwear are dum dum lollipops. I wasn't that concerend when I said he could have one everytime he pottied but then he started letting a few dribbles out and getting down, eating his lollipop and immediately getting back on the toilet to let a few more dribbles out. He spent all day on the toilet. I have been scrubbing the crap out of his teeth every few hours. I've tried saying he can only have one lollipop every 5 times he goes but then he just starts peeing his pants or begging for a diaper. UGH! My classes started back today and I might have bit off more than I could chew this time. I doubled up so I didnt have to take classes over the summer and I have a few crazy teachers with outrageous syllabi with more assignments crammed into the semester than I have ever seen! I will usually only get on teacher like that but of course since I doubled up, I got 3. yay! (sarcasm lol)

Cream Cheese Muffins (2 net carbs per muffin)

2 8oz. pks. philadelphia cream cheese
1/2 cup sweetener (I use spenda)
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Soften cream cheese about 40 seconds in microwave. Add other ingredients. Beat with mixer till smooth. Pour into 12 muffin pans lined with the papers. Bake at 350 for 20 min.

HAMBURGER CABBAGE STIR-FRY (AKA Crack Slaw)
1 pound ground beef
2 cloves garlic, minced
16 ounce bag coleslaw mix *
8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
Pinch ginger, optional
Pinch cayenne, optional
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 teaspoons granular Splenda, optional
1 bunch green onions, cut on the bias, about 8 onions or 3 ounces after trimming

In a very large skillet or wok, brown the ground beef with the garlic and a little salt and pepper. Drain the fat, if you like, or just leave it in. Add the cabbage and mushrooms and stir-fry until the cabbage is tender-crisp. Add the remaining ingredients and heat through. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.

Makes 6 servings (4.5 net carbs per serving)

Laticia,

Sounds like your doing great with working out! Try to stay away from those carbs! I also have to have it planned out the night before. I have a daily schedule I follow so that I dont waste time running around in circles all day. Meal prep is part of my nightly routine so everything is together and ready to go for each meal the next day. I meal plan every saturday and do my big grocery trip on sunday. I have never tried hummus. Might have to pick some up or see about making it when I get out of induction and can have chick peas. That is some craziness you have with all those basketball games! I hope you were able to get some down time!! Thank goodness I only have two kids.

I hope you are doing well and staying on plan since the last time you posted! Gotta get it done so you can look AMAZING for your wedding! :) Talk to you soon!

Thank you! Pretty proud of myself! Yeah there was alot of running to the bathroom. It's not as annoying if I think about it as a calorie burning sprint!

Welcome to day 7 of my journey. My weight held at 214.4 and I have to say that I am very pleased because its that TOM. Normally my body alerts me by bloating, headache and fatigue. I was very surprised when my visitor arrived because I didnt experience any of those things. I was further surprised to get on the scale and realize that I wasn't retaining water weight. I have gained up to five pounds due to bloating during TOM. I feel great and energized. I was up at 6 am. I did my load of laundry and unloaded my dishwasher. Started on some school work until it was time to get the kids up and get my daughter off to school. I was planning on starting my beachbody program this week but I must have been delusional when I made that plan. First week of school, I need to focus on getting back into a routine and start knocking out the assignments that are already posted. My husband and daughter both have a 4 day weekend because of MLK Jr. day so I am gonna lock myself in my room and try to get ahead of schedule with school. I will try to work the exercise in soon, when I find my groove with school. If nothing else, I will do a mile on the treadmill before I get in the shower at night.

I will be eating the crack slaw tomorrow so I will update on how that goes.

I did want to update that my body has dropped back into moderate ketosis. Not sure if thats due to TOM or not. I will see what happens when its over. I think the vitamins may have helped with the bloating, headache and fatigue because this is the first time its ever snuck up on me and I've done Atkins before.

Well, I dont have much else to say today. For anyone reading, I hope you're having a great day! I am really glad I decided to do this diary. It will be great to reflect back once I've hit my goal weight!
