Haha Blancita,
It just shows how lost I was, that I'd be happy to see a strange man like you said! I decided to be careful this time, so I took an alarm thing with me so if I get attacked, I can at least deafen my attacker (and myself, but who cares - at least I'll be on my feet and running by that time..)
If my friends could join me more regularly then great! But I know they won't be interested, and to be honest, I DO like going off by myself. I tend to be the person that calms everything and everyone down, so when we get lost I'll have to deal with the added pressure of calming my friends down, and that's energy that could be spent in finding a way out! But this works out great for everyone - at least they all know that they can do it with me whenever they want..
I love the idea of hiking with a bunch of regular people who know what they're doing, like you said. It's the feeling that you can all share your knowledge of what works for you individually (for example it was on WLF that I learned to take an extra pair of socks with me so as not to develop blisters...these are little but extremely important things). Plus, you're right. I always UNDER eat whenever I go out walking. Yesterday, for example, by the time I'd finished the walk, I calculated how many calories I'd ingested for the day, and it was just over 1000! So I had to eat something sharpish when I got home. I think it's the distraction - there's so much more than food, such as putting one foot in front of the other... or making sure you're not lost. Was there a leader with your hiking club? I really quite like the idea cos I keep intending to join the Ramblers (a walking association) but all the walks they seem to have done these past couple of months have been
1.) in urban areas (which I'm not really into at the moment), and
2.) have been no more than 7 or 8 miles, and I want to push myself (I did 17 miles yesterday!)
Once they have more difficult walks, I'll be more willing to join, I think..
I can't believe how quickly things change! Only a couple of months ago I wouldn't have thought I'd be able to walk for longer than an hour, yet here I am craving whole day treks! It's amazing how much the human body can take..
