Resistance Band

Hi all,
During next 3 months or so, I won't be able to access gym. So I'm pondering on another alternative such as buying resistance band and jump rope just so that I can keep on with my schedule. I know how to get a good rope but I have no idea of resistance band. I did search in this site but to no avail. I would be appreciated if anyone of you, have answers to my following questions.
What resistance should I get?
What is the outcome/result? In other words, does it have pretty inferior result comparing to actual weights?
What brand would be the best to get?
Thanks

as long as it provides enough resistance, it is no different. weights make you work against resistance (gravitational force of the weight) and resistance bands make you work against tensile resistance of the band. Resistance is resistance one way or another. Just make sue you get some very strong bands, most are weak and offer very little resistance and are designed for pilates or something

The best brand to get are jumpstretch bands. You won't find bands that give as much resistance as these at a lower price-- which is pretty high.

To start, Limestix is completely wrong about bands just being resistance, and all resistance is the same. He's wrong.

Bands offer resistance, but a completely different type - progressive or increasing resistance on the concentric, and a much more significant negative work load on the eccentric.

To be honest, I use bands for 90% of all my workouts. My stats: I am 35yrs, 180lbs, bench 350 (legit, competition style, clean and raw), pullups in the mid to high 20's, and I run in the low 6 min. mile repeatedly... so I know they work in power, muscular endurance, and when used correctly they help the run/cardio.

As far as which bands are the best... Jumpstretch are good, but I have a start up business with two patent pending band systems - one for cardio and one for weight training - mine are better for a lot of reasons. I'm in the process of getting a manufacturing/production contract signed.. but that will take you too far into your time off from the gym.

I won't go into why here, but bands, in general, do a lot more than suffice or replace a workout. I guess use jumpstretch bands and search the internet for Dave Tate and his website... he has good info on how to use bands.

Yeah, elitefts.com is a good resource for band training stuff. They've got an exercise index with all kinds of stuff you can do.

Thanks a heap for all responses. I have one quick question though. I don't know if I would be able to get jumpstretch brand in one of my local store. Just in case if I can't , which one should I chose from below. Those four are definately available in where I live.
Nike Resistance Band
PT Fitness Tubing
Dual Resistance Tube

Sounds like they are all designed for pilates and thus have very small spring potential energy relative to the job you want done. The truth is you probably won't be able to find bands that have heavy resistance at a store.

Resistance Band Training

Hello, in regards to your question about resistance band training, check out the article in MensHealth regarding resistance band training. just go to the Menshealth website and type in resistance band training and click on the link that is called "Take Your Workout Anywhere".

It will answer almost all of your resistance band training questions and shows you many different workouts you can do in the hotel room or anywhere you go while away from home. Resistance bands can be great! I hope this helps!

Taking your suggestion, I've visited jumpstretch site and found they are quite reasonable but only one exception. They are continuous band which dont have handle unlike those that can be found on net. I'm a bit hesitate to go forward on the grounds that it would limit what workout I can do. would it?

There is a guy who plays wide out for Florida State that he says all he uses is bands. If this is true i dont know but he is jacked to the core and not a bad WR, i forget his name but ill ask a friend tmrw.

^^ You can get fit with bands lol

I don't know if I'd trust anything from Men's Health. I've seen some of their fitness advice. "Terrible" doesn't even do it justice.

but, perhaps they've changed editors...

That doesn't make any sense. If I have a resistant band that, when I hit the max in a movement, provides 200 pounds of resistance, I will be getting a less effective workout on both the concentric and eccentric movements than If I had done the same exercise with a bar and some iron weighing 200.

First off, with bands I don't see how you build explosive power because the weight at the beginning is a tiny fraction of what it is at full extension, so you do not need to 'explode out' at any time. And on the eccentric movement, the resistance drops rapidly as you progress through the movement, making it easier as you go. This also makes it very tempting to do the eccentric movement as fast as possible.

I have some bands; they have their uses, and I'm quite sure you could get ripped with them, but I highly doubt they are more effective than moving dead weight, and I also don't see anything very significant about their resistance other than that is tapers up and down rather than being a set amount. The fact that is tapers up and down does not change that it is resistance resistance resistance, it just makes it easier

It is funny, but you can. Terrell Owens sells his own and works out with bands. It's not the fundamental pinnacle of his training, but it helps. With his attitude aside, he's still a badass athlete.

I don't think bands should be the staple of any workout routine, but another tool to use to supplement a routine. Like kettlebells and medicine balls. I don't necessarily think anyone can get JACKED by using them, but they can be beneficial especially for eccentric training. As limestix pointed out, people may have a tendency to do the eccentric portion of a motion fast, however it does take great control and muscle tension to keep it from going so fast.

They are useful and much less pricey than a Boxflex

that's how they got started, yes. But it seems in this day in age, everything is taken from rehab. Stability balls, balance disks, bosu balls, resistance tubes/bands...etc.

I will only use the tubes for rotator cuff exercises, and the ring version to put around my ankles for the hips.
