Reistance band training for weight loss?

Hi,

Like many other people I am trying to get into a fitness regime for the new year. Just got married, and am hitting that age where the physical affects of being out of shape become more and more apparent. I have been doing research on multiple programs for weight loss as well as the tools to I would need. I am leaning towards resistance bands because how compact, portable and versatile they are (I travel a lot for work so portability is key).

Do any of you have experience with these ProSource Bands? If so what are your opinions on them? Which of these sets, or combination thereof, do you think would be the best? Is there another brand of resistance bands that would be better? Do you think there are other accessories that would be better for me than resistance bands based on my needs (easy to use, compact, portable)? Thanks in advance for all your help! I LIKE these bands, but DON'T like this particular seller. If you can find these bands from a different seller, I think you would be well-served by these bands. I had originally thought I would order the Bodylastics MMA set of resistance bands, but when I found they were temporarily out-of-stock, I Google'd and found these ProSource bands from the seller you listed. Since I needed the bands for an immediate trip out-of-town, I ordered the bands with expedited shipping.

Long (tragic) story, short... seller promised delivery by 2nd-day air, and then couldn't/didn't deliver on-time. I had to refuse delivery and fight the company for a full refund (which was awarded by PayPal). I ended up ordering the MMA set from Bodylastics when they came back in stock.

So... keep in mind that, unlike Bodylastics, the seller mentioned here is NOT the manufacturer, only an online retailer, and you should be able to find these bands from another seller.

If you want to lose weight fast your best bet would be to increase your metabolism by building muscle with weights. Bands are effective, but not as effective as compound barbell lifts with the 'holy grail' of lifts such as squats, deadlifts etc
 
Uh, you can still effectively build muscle with bands, or even with no equipment at all. I've successfully kicked people's butts with workout routines that didn't involve weights.
 
I think that the better way and the first thing to do if you want to lose weight is to take control of your food habits.
If you have already a good food plan it's ok. After that you can choose if you should be using weights or resistance bands for your workouts.
From my experience if this the begining of your effort you should start with these bands and after a few weeks (6-8) you can try weights.
Here you can find a few exercises () with resistance bands and other stuff (like fitness ball and a stepper) that I created and used to do, when I wanted to lose my first of the 50 total pounds.

Resistance bands offer many benefits over conventional weights and dumbbells. For one, they’re lighter and more convenient to pack while on vacation. Moreover, resistance bands offer constant tension on your muscles during the entire concentric and eccentric portions of the movement. That’s something you won’t get with free weights wherein resistance is dependent on gravity. And resistance bands can be used to work any muscle in your body; they’re very versatile.

If you’re looking to increase your definition, then resistance bands are a viable option. I’d still recommend incorporating free weights into your routine, but an effective resistance band routine will yield results. I’d recommend keeping rest periods short; as you move quickly from exercise to exercise, you’ll be able to get some great fat-burning cardiovascular benefits as well.

If you’re looking to build some serious muscle, resistance bands alone won’t cut it. They’re great to use when on vacation, or to occasionally switch things up, but not as your entire muscle-building fitness program. To build muscle, you must use a heavy amount of resistance that fully fatigues your muscles in fewer than 10 repetitions. With resistance bands, it’s very hard to max out – and to incrementally progress to slightly heavier levels of resistance. You really need free weights for that level of fine-tuning.

Resistance bands definitely do work – and they can be a great part of any fitness routine.
