Really going to lose the weight for good

I am 5'3" and 170lbs. All through my childhood and early college I was thin, but then I started gaining weight...a few pounds a year. Then I got married and pregnant. I gained 40 pounds with my pregnancy. Finally I joined a gym, started working out several days per week and eating better, and the weight started coming off. I actually lost 15 pounds.
But then 2 things happened, my husband lost his job and we had to give up our gym membership and I had a close family member diagnosed with cancer, a year and a half later he died. The last few months before he died all of my good habits went out the window. I was eating fast food several times a week b/c that was all I had time for. We would rarely make it to the grocery store, our life was chaos.
I haven't seemed to be able to get back on the wagon and my weight just keeps creeping up. I put my stats into a BMI calculator today and it told me I was obese! I need help. I hope that this site will help me stay on track.
I would like to lose a minimum of 35 pounds, although 50 would be my ideal.
I plan to start eating better, I went on localharves.org and found a CSA farm close to me so I will be getting fresh in season fruits and veggies weekly all season, so at least I will have that good food in the house.
I plan to start working out 4 days per week, alternating walking outside with the treadmill and my elliptical.
I always plan to weigh myself once a week, but usually weigh myself several times per week, I just hope that the scale starts moving down.

With a little hardwork and dedication, you'll definitely be able to reach your goals! I'm excited to see your progress :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I worked out today on the treadmill and ate healthy for breakfast and lunch...one day at a time right?

Ok so I made it through yesterday, my official day 1

I worked out on the treadmill for 30 minutes alternating walk/run cycles, but I got tired after about 16 minutes so I just walked the rest. I was happy that I stayed on and moving for the entire 30 minutes, yea me!

I tried to eat better yesterday, this is what I had:
Pre-workout: 6oz 1% chocolate milk
Breakfast: 1 bowl frosted shredded mini wheats with skim milk
Lunch: Prepackaged indian food (I can't remember what it was called) It was vegetarian with lentils and potatoes and a spicy sauce, (320 cal) according to the package. I also had one piece of naan bread with it. water to drink
Snack: 1 nectarine, cup of coffee
Dinner: 1 bratwurst on bun with mustard, small serving of potato chips with french onion dip followed by 1 nectarine, water to drink.

I know I fell off the wagon a bit at dinner, but I don't have much healthy stuff in my house yet. I haven't had a chance to go out and buy new healthy food. I have that on my schedule for tomorrow morning, I am going to the farmers market.

I worked out on the elliptical trainer this morning for 30 minutes (yeah!)
I had a south beach living bar for breakfast and some water. I am about to have lunch. We are ordering out, so I tried to find the healthiest thing on the menu...taco salad minus the crunchy bowl.

I have always had a hard time monitoring what I eat, so for now I will try to eat well Mon-Fri have a taste anything junky I have been craving on the weekends. I feel like if I know I can have it at the end of the week I won't feel so desperate and hopefully I can't do too much damage over the weekends.
My big focus right now is on getting into a workout regimen. Once I get into working out as a part of my daily schedule I will take a harder look at my diet. I hope this works for me. :newbie:
Here's to making this work this time!!

I think it's much easier for me to eat healthy when I'm in the habit of working out. I think it takes 3 weeks for something to become a habit. You can definitely do it. You're already doing great with your last 2 workouts! Keep it up :)

Also was your SBD Living bar one of the Crispy Meal Bars??? I LOOOVE the peanut butter and chocolate ones. I eat them a lot for breakfast :)

I eat the SBD high protein cereal bars, my 2 faves are maple nut and cinnamin raisin. They really fill me up but only have 140 calories, good for breakfast on the go.

Thanks for your support, I get frustrated easily so it is good for me to know that someone will know if I don't workout or if I go overboard on the eating.:)

Those ones are REALLY good too! I was OBSESSED with them for awhile. I really like the peanut butter, maple nut, and the cinnamon raisin ones. I used to eat 2 for breakfast every morning. Thats 280 calories and 20 grams of protein which I think is pretty decent. I've started eating the meal bars though bc then I get 19g of protein for only 210 calories. They're really expensive though.

And it's definitely easy to get frustrated at times. The key is to not let a little frustration turn on day of not working out or eating bad into a week of not working out or eating unhealthy. They're will be ups and downs, but as long as you keep at it, you WILL make it to your goal.

Have a great weekend!! :)

I have not tried the meal bars, I don't know if I have seen them in my grocery store. I usually buy mine in the cereal aisle, so I probably have to look in the health food section of my store, thanks for the tip.

We are having chinese for dinner, yum! and I pledge to get up tomorrow morning and get on my treadmill.

Ok so yesterday I didn't do the best at eating well. I had taco salad for lunch, but didn't eat any of the deep fried bowl, replaced the iceberg lettuce with mixed greens and went light on the dressing, so not too bad. In the afternoon I slipped, I have been really hungry for pretzel jello (sounds gross but it's really good) it has crushed pretzels, butter and sugar baked as the crust, then a layer of a mixture of cream cheese, cool whip and sugar, then a layer of strawberry jello. It is really good, and really rich. I had 2 pieces but then I felt ill b/c it was too much. Hubby and I had a late dinner and he wanted chinese so I tried to go healthy with bean curd szechuan style. It is tofu and mixed veggies stir-fried in a spicy sauce. Although I did have an egg roll too. So not the best day for eating, but it was the weekend.

Today I got up and worked out on treadmill, 32 minutes of walk/run. I felt tired, but great after! The best news yet is that I weighed myself this am and was down 1 pound! I know it could be water weight, but I am willing to take any encouragement I can get. :hurray:

Today is not going to be such a hot day for my eating healthy either, by bro and his fiancee are in town and they want to go to outback to eat for dinner. My plan is to try to eat well for the early part of the day and not go too crazy when we are out to eat.

Tomorrow is elliptical trainer workout day, I am psyched that I have been feeling so great after workouts! Now I just need to stay on the wagon...

ugh! just got home from outback, ate way too much, even though I brought half of my food home. I did opt for water with lemon instead of coke so that's something...
On a brighter note discovered the best tea ever for making iced tea: Lipton White Tea with Island Mango and Peach flavor.
I brewed some, chilled it and added some cold water, it was awesome. By far the tastiest iced tea I have ever had. This will be my new favorite drink when I'm not having water.
My three sisters and I are going to see Sex and the City tonight. I know it won't live up to the show, but hopefully it will come close :lurk5:

So I saw the movie last night, I enjoyed it. It wasn't awesome, but it was enjoyable. My sisters bought a bucket of popcorn, but I didn't have any. Even they hardly had any b/c we were so full from dinner.
I got up early this morning and worked out on the elliptical, way to go me! this was my fourth day in a row. I have to get up for work super early on Monday's, so I am going to make Monday's a non-workout day. I would just be discouraged if I felt like I had to get up an ungodly hour to reach my goal. So, off tomorrow and my goal is to workout the rest of the week.

I went to the grocery store today and stocked up on fruit, veggies, whole grain pasta and bread, tuna, and chicken. I am going to stick to a healthy eating and exercise regimen at least until Friday night, then if I'm really craving something I will have what I want.

I had a good day today. I didn't workout, but that was planned, and I did eat well today. Here's what I had:

Breakfast: Carnation instant breakfast made with skim milk, I added 1 Tbsp of benefiber (4.5grams of fiber). I added the fiber b/c instant breakfast doesn't have any in it.

Lunch: Salad: romaine heart, cherry tomatoes, cheese, a few bacon bits, garlic croutons and 1000 island dressing.
1 apple sliced with 2 Tbsp of PB to dip it in.

Snack: South Beach living bar

Dinner: wrap sandwich, 1/2 veggie with feta, tomato, lettuce and olives, 1/2 chicken caesar salad (not as good, kind of soggy)
Salad with romaine hearts, tomatoes, cucumbers and ranch dressing.

Drinks: Lots and Lots of water 64+ ounces.

I am happy with myself, dinner was provided at a meeting at work and there were awesome looking cookies and coke there, but I was strong and ate the healthiest stuff I could find.

I think I will put my food info into an online calorie counter to see what number I come up with.

Tomorrow: workout on the treadmill 30 minutes walk/run and healthy eating again.:)

Good job on you healthy eating today especially avoiding the cookies. Free, delicious cookies are SO hard to pass up especially if everybody else is eating them. You did great! :)

Great job on passing on the cookies. It's so hard to pass stuff like that up. I never knew how hard until this week. Keep up the workouts. You're doing good!

Thanks you guys! Positive feedback is the best! I worked out again this morning and I am now having my carnation instant breakfast. :coolgleamA:

I put my food I ate yesterday into an online calorie counter and it said I consumed 1900 calories yesterday. It also said if I want to lose weight I need to cut it back to 1600/day. So now I have to figure out how.

It is funny how you can convince yourself you eat so little or workout so much until you have to write it down. It's hard to see the cold hard truth, but it will make it easier to lose weight if I have a more realistic view of where I am at now.

Hey you are doing really great!! I hope that you will stick to it, the end result will be great!

A couple suggestions I want to give. For breakfast you should try Fibre One Honey Clusters cereal. One serving has 14g of fibre and it is really tasty. I eat it every morning :)

Another thing. I recommend (if you don't already have it) calorie-wise salad dressing. Anything made from Kraft has a calor-wise option including salad dressings, mayo, etc. (It's has a little blue "ribbon" across the fron saying calorie-wise). This can help to cut out a few calories each day.

I hope you find this useful and good luck with your journey :) I'm sure I'll be following your journey and encouraging you when you lose hope :)

Adeon: thanks for the suggestions, I am going to Kroger's (grocery store) on Friday, I will check those two things out. Every little bit helps!

So i am trying to limit my calorie intake to 1600/day. I have never counted calories before, so this is new for me. I found a free online program that is easy to use, so I input all of the food I at and it calculates for me.
I think if I do that for a while I will be able to start to guesstimate how many calories everything has. I did good yesterday I consumed 1680, so it's not impossible. It seems to be easier for me to watch what I eat when I am at work. I just pack really healthy stuff the night before, and then I have no choice but to eat healthy b/c that's all I brought. When I am home all day (like today) it is harder b/c I have my whole kitchen to choose from and my sister likes to invite me out to lunch... I will be strong today!!

I worked out yesterday on my treadmill, and I am just getting ready to go down and use the elliptical, and I lost another pound so that's something that will keep me motivated hopefully until I lose another pound:)

Yay you lost a pound! You'll get to your goal one pound at at time!! We weight pretty much the same. Let's have a race! ;) haha I hope you have another great day!!

How can I get my ticker to show up here? I tried, but I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance!
