Quitting smoking and weight loss

Hi -- I have decided to go ahead and get thin for good. I have yo-yoed (sp?) since I had my 5 year old son. I had another baby 19 months ago, and I've been everything from a comfortable size 8 to a tight size 12 (currently). I'm tired of fighting with this. I also have recently quit smoking, which is good for obvious reasons but bad because smoking increases your metabolism. So, I feel like I'm having to fight extra hard to lose this weight.

I would love to lose 25 pounds, but 15 is the minimum. I would be very comfortable at 150 pounds since I am 5'10" tall. In saying that, however, I'm not as interested in the weight as I am fitting in my clothes. If I only lost 10 pounds because I've gained a few pounds of muscle, I don't care as long as I don't feel like a stuffed sausage when I put my pants on.

Anyway, my strategy is sort of a combination of lots of things since I cannot seem to stick to one plan/diet, etc. I'm trying to take into account not only calories, but also fat content, glycemic index and nutrition. I cannot starve myself with 1,200 calories a day because I'm borderline hypoglycemic. I'll pass out. I'm trying to exercise 5-6 times a week using different DVDs that I've acquired over the years. I'm mixing them up so I don't get bored.

So, that's me. If anyone has any words of wisdom, I'd love to hear from you. I really wanted to join this so maybe I could be held accountable day-to-day. My husband still smokes and doesn't need to lose weight, and I live out in the sticks and don't work, so I'm not around any other adults who can do this with me. Have a great day!

Friendly Challenge

I too have a 19month old......and have quit smoking a little over a month ago and started my weight loss program on Sept.15.....I have alot more weight to lose than you but it's all the same....Your plan sounds great! I am on 1,200 calories a day and exercise. My exercise portion is where I need the most work! I walk or I exercise with dvds....The 2 Im doing now are hip hop abs....and kickboxing. I wish I could honestly say I exercised everyday.....But with 2 kids it is hard...Inconsistant....thats what my exercise is.
How about we (you and I) set a goal this week.....I dunno something like we will both do one of our tapes at least 3 or 4 times this week....How does that sound? I'm really struggling to make it to 25 pounds lost......and I'm a pound and a half away......a little friendly challenge may do us both good!

Ps.....

Doing these two things together ...quitting smoking and losing weight..... Is very hard......and it SUCKS!!!! TRUST ME.......but it can be done! It can!!!!(thats what I keep telling myself)

So glad to have a companion!

Stayathomemommy, that sounds great! I too am a stay-at-home mom, and it's so easy to get into a funk when I don't even have to get dressed every day if I don't want to. But 3-4 times a week sounds good. I think I burned myself out last week when I did it 6 times and ate nothing but salad and yogurt. I always do that -- get gung-ho about this and overdo it. Anyway, glad to meet you. I'll try to check in daily!

And thanks, Logan23, for the welcome!

Sounds GGGGRRRREAT.....

Woulnd't you know the title would refrence a food commercial!...lol..
I know all about getting into a funk being a stay at home mom and sometimes is feels like the movie "Groundhog Day". OK....so its a deal....3 or 4 times this week....
A little info about me:
I am a stay at home mom of 2 (girl:3yrs,boy:actually 20 months now I think)
I live in Florida
I'm 36, married, have been a yo-yo dieter my whole life, Have lost at least 50 pounds 3 times in my life.(I got pretty big a few times) After the birth of my son was the heaviest I have ever been. (besides pregnancy and I was a whale I tell ya!! but my children were huge!)
I am now on a weight loss mission! I have fell off the wagon a time or two since I started Sept 15.(damn Halloween candy) but am fully confident I will lose this weight.
And interesting fact.....My very best friend in the whole world is moving to Louisana! Her husband took a job there and they are moving the family! He leaves Dec 1. she wont be moving unil ......June...
ALRIGHT.....enough of my blab...I'm gonna go work out the flab....lol...Im a dork around kids too much I think!

Hi Mommies, yes, both of you... I'm not a mommy, but... I quit smoking 3 months ago and have managed to lose about 10lbs in the same time. not a lot of weight, but better than a gain!

Altogether down a fair bit since I started trying to lose weight in the beginning, (the smoking was more recent). Welcome to the forum!

Read the stickies, and start diaries if youhaven't already. It helps. because then you'll get people like me stalking your threads every day offering helpful advice, support, friendship requests, just saying hi, or maybe even making suggestive references... (hey, it happens:biggrinjester:)

Hi contratormommy!

I just want to throw my experience in here. I have quit smoking for 10 months and have lost 50lbs in that time- so it is completely possible and I am proof of it.
I have found that one fed off the other. I did not want to smoke bc I wanted to exercise. There is so much I can do now that I couldn't do before that I know I will not go back to smoking. That is not to say that I don't want one every now and again but the good I do far outweighs the smoking.

If you really want to you can do both- you just need to be committed to it.

I totally agree with bigguy. One does feed the other. exercising and smoking just don't mix. drop the ciggies and get into a routine for exercise and you find yourself feeling so much better that you'll never want to smoke again!

The nice part is that the exercise offsets the potential gain from the lack of nicotine. It's a win win.

This is the reason why I started exercising. I felt i had no room to gain anymore weight and thought I would at lease need to offset the metabolism shift.
Who the hell knew it would turn into what it has.

No shit? This was my way of quitting too!! I tossed a cup of coffee and a half dozen lung rockets to start my morning out and replaced it with a trip to the gym, or a ride on the bike. I didn't want to gain back any weight either, that's why I did it that way.

Beside, once the adrenaline and endorphins kick in, who needs nicotine?

Back again

I don't know if anyone who responded to this is still on here, but I wanted to apologize for dropping out. I did not stick with the quitting smoking and dieting when I last posted, but here I am on day 31 of not smoking, and I think I'm ready to start losing weight. I guess I had to do one thing at a time. I feel great, though I think I'm starting to see a little weight gain from the not smoking. Anyway, I hope you all were able to stick to your plans.

Hi all,

I too am quitting and replacing smoking with excercise. The stories have been inspiring...I know it won't be easy but I am prepared. Good luck to all!
