If someone is planning to loose as much fat as possible they would need to do something that won't build muscle, because when you add muscle you also add fat, right?
So, is it not a good idea to lift weights when trying to loose weight?

Also, the goal of burning fat is to burn calories. I think it's like 3000 cals = 1 pound.

Yes. In fact, increased muscle results in more calories burned throughout the day.

Not at all. Hopefully as you're adding muscle, you're adding muscle :) Muscle is heavier than fat, so you might be adding WEIGHT, but not FAT.

Cardio is an excellent way to burn fat because it targets the lower-output energy systems over a long period of time.

3500 Kcal = 1 lbs. That means calories from any nutrient. You want to get 3500 Kcal in DEFICIT each day. Many of us burn 2500 calories a day, but that doesn't mean we lose a lbs every 2 days. We're also taking in calories. So what you want to be looking at is caloric deficit each day.

Caloric Deficit = Kcal you burn/day - Kcal you eat/day

Once your caloric deficit adds up to 3500, you've burned a lbs of body fat. We say it burns body fat because, once you've burned past all the available energy-producing nutrients (Kcal you eat/day) it has to tap into stored energy-producing nutrients (body fat and muscle).

Remember - any energy producing nutrients you ingest (protein, carbs, and lipids) can be converted to body fat for storage.
