Questions w/ Bill Starr's 5x5

I just had a few questions concerning Bill Starr's 5x5 workout routine... Firstly, i workout alone so will doing the assigned workouts on machines be detramental, or will i not see the same intended results as someone not using a machine? Secondly... i currently workout 5 days a week for lifting and 3 (MWF) for running, i don't like to feel like i am slacking off so what should i do on the days between Starr's scheduled workout days? Should i keep it just to cardio, or if i were to do some of the lifts i already do (say more bicep and tricep, maybe a little more chest (pec dec) and shoulders) would this be counteracting/hurting the cork i'm putting in on the "power lift" days? Lastly, how long should i do his program, i like the definition i have, but getting bigger never hurts... so like 4-6 weeks then back to a different routine? And is there anything i should do before i start the Starr Power Lifting Cycle?

Thanks, as always!

Im not a fan of Bill star, but nobody can question its a bloody good workout.
If youve not have at least 2yrs in weight training you will fail. Its not untill you can left heavy that it really starts to work for you.

with the Cardio... Do 20-30 mins every day not within 2hours before or after of your weight training.

this way you wont tire out your legs and you'll be burning more cals over the course of a week.

The 5x5 routine is geared towards gaining strength and mass, so assuming that is your goal, you should not be doing anything on your days off. You should be resting. Cardio once a week would be good, but any more than that will likely slow down your gains. If your goal is to lose fat and hold on to the muscle you have, then go with what Manofkent has suggested for you. One other thing, do you not have access to free weights? Avoid machines if possible.

DONT do machines. it says so on the site that you must absolutley NOT substitute anything with machines, you wont get the same results. and are you on the advanced or intermid?

and manofkent, i dont lift very heavy, but ive had some progres with the bill starr 5x5 routine, mostly in squat and deadlifts.

I appreciate all of the input... and to answer a few questions...

I do have access to free weights (i work out at a university until school ends then i sign my life away to 24hr with a membership throughout the summer) however i don't traditionally like doing squat, bench press w/ bar (i'll use dumbells) without a partner... for obvious reasons, especially if i was doing the 5x5 with muscle failure bound to occur, don't really feel like dropping weights! So if anyone out there goes to CU Boulder and would like to spot me for a 5x5 workout 3x a week... SWEET!

So if i were to do the Starr 5x5 with machines, would i be wasting my time, or would my increases be not as significant, or are there ways i can do the workouts on my own?

Continually, i am not overweight by any means, yet i dont know my %BF, and basically i would be using Bill's system to gain muscle mass that i could later better define (is that possible?). So i am thinking the mix of cardio on off days and using machines w/ some freeweight lifts (obviously dead lift) would basically do what i am looking for... PLEASE tell me i am SOMEWHAT on the right track?

.... however, would there be a better cycle that someone colud turn me onto that would do this? I'm not afraid to do some research, so maybe a name or just a GOOD INFORMATIVE and not BS site i could visit...

Once again, thanks all!

Still new... what would this be referring to? (who knows, i may know it, just never knew the correct term/verbage?)

Thanks

do you have a link to the program in question. i'm doing one of his variations and there's no failure training involved in it

dude, i dont use a spotter, you dont have to go to failure on the 5x5.. ur not suppose to. if i feel i wont be able to do 5 reps of whatever on squat or bench, i simply dont do it ;) and free weights are much better than machines, im no expert so i cant really say how much.. but theres a big difference.. like on a bench press machine thingy, i can probobly do like 100kg, probobly more:p but regular bench.. maybe 65-70 kg:p

You can define any muscle mass that you have. It's called cutting. You bulk to gain muscle mass, and cut to gain fat. The only thing that effects how much your muscles show is how much fat they have over them. You cannot isolate areas of fat the way you can isolate muscles, but by lowering your body fat you can increase your muscle definition.
