Questions about exercising at home

Hello everyone,

I am 18, and have decided that I need to get into shape, mostly because I am joining the Air Force after college. But I have to start now, because in January I have a physical fitness test to see if I am qualified for an AFROTC scholarship. Now that I've told you my life story, I'll cut to the chase.

I have no weights, nor do I have the means to purchase any. I have no gym membership, and there's no way I can buy "fitness equipment" with my current financial status (broke). How can I get into shape and lose weight at home?

I do situps and things like that every night, is that good enough? I'm going to start running later on when it gets warmer. I run into problems with pushups, because I have very little upper-body strength. When I say little, I mean 3 pushups and I'm ready to quit. Is there an easier way to build upper body? Something I can step up gradually will help a lot, I think.

Thanks in advance.

need money to get in shape?

I don’t think you need money to get in shape…….we used canned tomato sauce and things like that before we got weights!!!!!!

It could even be argued that lifting heavy objects from real life is better than lifting freeweights, at least for developing functional strength.

That said, what about good ol' pushups?

You can do alot with push-ups. The more you do, the more you CAN do. If standard push-ups are too dificult, mix it up a bit by elevating your upper body. The objective here will be volume.

Other inexpensive solutions include dips and pull-ups.

You can do Intermediate Pushups... I don't know how to explain them. Here's a picture:

You could start out with this as a free home workout with no equipment:

Stretch

Up to 5 reg. pushups
20 int. pushups
1 Reg. Pushup

Jump up
20 moderately fast squats
20 " " plie squats(toes pointed out, wider stance)
20 Calf Raises (Like standing on your tip toes and coming back down - CONTROLLED)
10 Right lunges
10 Left lunges
5 lunges on right w/o stepping back to standing... just up down up down..
5 lunges on left " "

This ab routine:

And do your running. This will give you a simple, good start on being fit and then you can vary the workout, exercises and intensity. Try to set a goal... like maybe 30 military pushups... ;)
