Hello there. I'm a high-school student that's going to do an investigation and a report about weight problems in society today, and I'd be so grateful if you could help me out. Just by answering some questions, you'd really do me a big favour. :) (Please forgive me for eventual misspellings and other grammatical faulties; I'm from Sweden. ^^')

It's anonymous, I'm just asking for your age, what country you live in and what kind of weight problem you have. It's vital for me to know, so please answer correctly.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)

Please don't forget to mention your age, what country you live in and if you consider yourself/are considered over-weight or under-weight.

Thank you incredibly much for answering! :D

Why Not, sure, somethin to do....

Yes

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Yes

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
Couldn't fit clothes, Started getting health problems due to weight gain and being unhealthy (no movement) Became more embarrassed to go out

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?

To shoot for a proper healthy weight, and do it in a healthy manner, such as eating throughout the day and getting in some good exercise.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
Yes. Also with knowing that statistics of overweight ppl are higher than they ever were, so many more ppl have gathered together to try to make a change for everyone. Trying to get our obese kids a lil more active. The Wii for instance, getting someone up and moving rather than using just our hands to play video games. Since now in this day and age, we have soo many more Healthier choices to choose from at Fast Food places, and that a lot of places have actually banned Trans-Fats, and what not. So now there is really no excuse to say it's hard to be healthier.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)
Yes, Working Out, Counting my Calories (to keep portion control, knowing what I am putting into my body), Therapy

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
I've gotten comments at my highest weight, and now that I'm losing weight... someone finally noticed yesterday.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
I feel uncomfortable all of the time, don't fit into clothes. I don't want to leave the house because I'm so fat.

It's anonymous, I'm just asking for your age, what country you live in and what kind of weight problem you have. It's vital for me to know, so please answer correctly.

Age: 27
Country: United States
Kind Of Weight Problem: Obese/Overweight

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?

Yes. Technically, I am obese and I am well aware that I have a weight problem. I have never been a small guy, but I have allowed myself to get extremely fat and out of shape over the past few years. Even though I will always have a large frame, I know that I need to lose a lot of weight.

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?

Surprisingly, I haven't gotten that many comments on my weight. Most people actually don't say anything about my weight unless I am the one who brings it up. Even then, they're still not honest with telling me how they feel, because they lie to me and tell me that I'm not that fat, even though it's obvious to everyone that I am.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?

Being obese makes it difficult to do daily tasks, which sometimes can get exhausting. Walking up the stairs, carrying a laundry basket, taking out the garbage and walking down the street (for example), are very tiring and can often become quite a chore to accomplish at times.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?

I get discriminated against by women. Women won't give me a chance (when it comes to relationships) and there is no other reason than my weight/appearance. Other than that, I don't get discriminated against because of my weight.

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?

I went through (and am still going through) a period of my life where I was self-destructing and stopped caring about everybody and everything, including myself, my appearance, my health and my weight. Over the course of the past few years, I have consumed entirely way too much food and entirely way too much alcohol, which has caused me to gain a ridiculous amount of weight.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?

Here in the United States, our society expects everyone to have a perfect body. Expectations are unrealistic in this country, considering over half of our citizens are overweight. Society also expects people like me (who are heavy) to disappear. Our society (for the most part) doesn't want fat people and acts as if we are a disgusting breed of people who ruin everyone else's day just by being alive. So, they expect us fat people to live as shut-ins and never leave our houses.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?

Yes, absolutely. The main cause of this is the media. In almost every magazine, TV show, movie (etc), you see nothing but "perfect" looking people with "perfect" bodies, which makes people extremely uncomfortable with their own bodies, even if they have a beautiful body themselves. There is a lot of pressure that is put on people through the media and the unrealistic images that are shown to the American public on a daily basis. This causes a lot of people to hate themselves, just because they don't look like the people in magazines or the people on TV.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)

Yes. I am currently watching what I eat (aka - calorie counting), working out 5 days a week and running/biking on a daily basis.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
Simple answer is no. The long answer is that I went through a period of time where I was maybe 20lbs over the weight I wanted to be. At no point was I ever officially overweight. I was just not happy with the look since it was not 20lbs of muscle.

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Nope

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
Primarily diet. I had to stop eating the foods that increased my weight (such as Mexican food.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
No negative social or physical impacts. Infact everything has been possitively impacted. I feel better, I look better and I am sure the ladies would agree ;-)

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
Probably when my fiance was pregnant and she craved food. I would get both of us the food. About 1/3 of the way through the pregnancy I realized how unhealthy we were eating and we made some diet modifications to help ourselves and the baby.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
Society shouldnt expect anything from anyone regarding their weight. It is a personal decision/problem.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
Yes, especially with airlines charging more for overweight people. I understand the reasoning but if I was the person being charged more I would feel like I was being discriminated against. It puts an unfair pressure on one group of people to change.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)
I dont really have any weight to lose but I am actively eating healthy and read these forums as a support crutch for when I start to drift off course. The journeys I read about on here are incredible and inspiring.

Age: 23
Country: USA
Condition: Not considered overweight or underweight. Sadly, I am extraordinarily average.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
No. I am in the Healthy bodyfat % range measured by calipers (Jackson and pollock) but for those that do not look at the amount of muscle and only take height and weight into consideration (BMI) I would be considered morbidly obese. this is common for weightlifters and powerlifters.
Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Yes, in general the comments involve people thinking i weigh a lot less than i do
Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
my weight has not been a problem in normal daily activities
Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
Getting insurance at a resonable price when you are heavier than the average population has been a problem despite not actually being fat.
Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
For a while my activity levels were lower after i had kids but I have a lot more muscle mass than average due to my sport.
Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
I don't have a problem with people i meet in person but many people online expect that I am more overweight than what i am in reality.
Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
No
Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)

I am trying to reduce my BF% closer to the athletic ideal through strict calorie counting and high protein diet to compliment my athletic training.

Forgot to add this.....female, 34, UK.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
Yes, I was and still am what they call 'morbidly obese'

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Yes, plenty.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
It influences life in every aspect - every day chores, realtionship, health, overall well-being

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
Yes. Everything is more difficult when you're overweight, every day chores used to wear me out. I had high blood pressure, water retention and several other health problems related to being overweight. I have been discriminated against and had abuse thrown at me for being overweight, and have been physically attacked on the grounds of looking the way I did.

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
I started putting weight on when I was about 14 due to a severely screwed up life. My fat was my security blanket that I could hide behind. If I got hit, it didn't hurt as much because of the fat. Over time it got out of hand, and any diet I tried just make things worse (jo-jo effect).

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
They expect me to stay the way I am because that is how I have always been, and they are worried that my personality will change together with my body.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
I think it has always been bad, but due to media influence, it has spiralled out of control.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)
Yes. Calorie controlled eating and exercise.

I am female, 24 and... well I am originally from Argentina, but live in Ghana, West Africa. I am in the normal BMI range (22).

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?

I know I do not have a weight problem anymore, I did have one before I changed my lifestyle, I was overweight by my BMI and clearly overweight by looks in the mirror!

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?

I rarely got comments on my highest weight from strangers but my family knew how I was suffering and they commented on it. Both my mother and my boyfriend really tried to get me to lose weight, because they knew it would make me happier. It took me a long time to see that this was the reason and nto some selfish reason I always thought they had.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?

I was depressed when I was at my highest weight, felt worthless, could not do things I really liked (I used to be a dancer!), also I was very ill, and it was hard for me to pinpoint why it was. Today I know I hav coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) and if I avoid certain foods I do not get sick anymore.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?

I have not experienced any of that, but I was not that big. I was discriminated in dance classes, but that was at a normal weight. I just wasn't underweight like all my classmates!

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?

I ate too much and exercised too little. I really like food and I would just eat too often, too much. The bigger I got the more uncomfortable I was exercising to I ceased to do that. This led to me becoming even bigger! Plus I yoyodieted a few times, always ending up a little bit bigger than before.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?

Well, everyone on TV, movies, magazines, etc... is nice and thin. the picture of the flattummied, tanned, beach girl is there and we all know it. I do not think "society" expects me to be this way, but I think I expect myself to be this way, because of seeing it so much and because "rolemodels" are always thin.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?

Well, a long long time ago being fat was "in", but that hasn't been the case in a while! It was "in" because it wasn't the norm, now being thin is not the norm, and guess what, being thin is "in". I think there is a higher pressure because we are fatter than ever and it is seriously affecting the health of the first world population! A nation of overweight, sick people, is terrible and I completely agree that it should be taken very seriously. I believe children should have nutrition classes in school and more physical education. I believe parents should have to take nutrition classes before their children get overweight. You see a lot of small children being already really chunky on the playground and that is very scary. We do not want a world of people who can't walk, run, work full days because of their weight and the medical problems the weight brings. I think there may be more pressure on people to lose weight, and I think it is correctly so!

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)

I eat consciously, have educated myself in the things I can and should eat and the things I should avoid, I work out, do leisure sports on weekends and holidays. I lead a very healthy lifestyle I think nowadays. And all other aspects in my life have gotten better because I am leading such a healthy life!

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?

Yep

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?

Yep

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?

It has effected my self confidence. It makes me constantly aware of everyone about me, I am one of those people that DO care about what others think. It makes my wallet less lighter because bigger clothes are expensive. I'm pretty much in good health except that I have GERD and another problem. Both of these have been caused by obesity. My knees are also in pretty bad shape.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?

Not really. Or at least I don't think so. When I was a kid, of course kids used to exclude me from things. But as an adult, I don't think I've ever had that problem.

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have
this occurred?

Well, I've always been overweight, errrr, or obese. I sort of blame it on my parents at an early age, cuz they spoiled me. I know it's not their fault, they didn't know any better, and they got me whatever I wanted, especially junk food. I don't think they knew how to handle it.

And of course I grew up eating that way, and I continued to eat that way through my 20s. I'm now 27.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?

From ME personally? lol, nothing. I doubt anyone's out there concerned about what I'm doing. :p

But in general, for everyone that is overweight. Society teaches people what is acceptable, and what is not. I'm sure that if women were still being painted as voluptuous beauties, or photographed, or used as models, then we would be acceptable. But that is not the case.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?

No, still the same pressure.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)

I am working out and counting my calories.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
yes

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
no...it may have given me the kick up the butt i needed if someone had...but my friends & family accept me just as i am...weight gain included.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
don't feel as fit as i used to. have a child with autism who likes to 'run like the wind' (his words) so i need to be able to keep up with the little tyke...

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
it affects me socially b/c i have refused invitations to go out in the past weddings/parties etc b/c have felt self conscious about my weight gain.
never been discriminated against...if that had ever happened i would've cried...A LOT!!!

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
dealing with stress by comfort eating...then eating b/c i was fat anyway...vicious circle..........

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
i wasn't aware anything was expected of me??! LOL
ok seriously........to take care of my health i guess... & lose the weight before i get any health related problems!!

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
yes. with increased awareness of health generally & what constitutes a healthy diet its expected we should all 'know better' i suppose. but that approach doesn't take into account that for many ppl weight gain & over eating has an emotional/psychological cause...weight gain is the symptom not the root of the problem. the reasons why ppl over eat in the face of the knowledge that they will gain weight & be at higher risk for developing a number of serious and potentially lethal health problems, including hypertension/high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and gallstones and gall bladder disease...need to be addressed too.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)
basically trying to eat less/exercise more...not rocket science really is it??
lately focusing on reducing my carbohydrate intake esp the bad/simple carbs/ refined sugar found in biscuits, cakes and pastries/chocolate/pizzas/sweets etc & instead filling up on the good/complex carbs/slower release ones such as brown rice/chickpeas/nuts/oats/root vegetables/wholegrain cereals &
wholemeal breads....i was a total carb junky not that long ago...:D

please don't forget to mention your age, what country you live in and if you consider yourself/are considered over-weight or under-weight.
F/42/UK/i consider myself over weight esp for my height (only 5ft 4ish)

Age: 20
Country: United States (Northeast)
Weight Bracket: "Technically" I'm between Obese and Overweight, but I "feel" just overweight.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?
I don't know. Throughout my childhood, I didn't think I had any weight problems. I thought I was rather normal and average, and just a bit bigger than everyone else. I always thought it was just the way my bones were arranged--not necessarily that I had extra fat on me. Now that I know better... I'm still not sure if I'd admit I have weight problems. Simply, I'm overweight because I'm too short (5 feet) to eat the amount of food I've been eating. Maybe I'm just making excuses for myself? I think that now that I "know better", it'll be easy (albeit time consuming) to get this weight off of me.

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?
Not really. I mean, I've gotten compliments that I'm not too thin from mostly older people, but mostly no, people leave my weight alone.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?
It's mostly my self esteem that's been effected. I'm afraid of being judged by the way I look, and I'm awfully shy. I suppose I use my weight as a shield to hide behind. I don't go out much, or do some things that I'd love to do, simply because of my appearance and fear of being judged.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?
I don't think my weight has effected anything in my life that was out of my control. I think everything effected by my weight is inside me--as in, again, my self esteem, fear of risk, fear of judgment... Which leads to me not taking chances--you know, applying for jobs, putting myself out there for friendships or relationships, asking for assistance... I think if all this weight came off of me, nobody would treat me different UNLESS my attitude and personality change with it. So, I hope that with weight loss, I gain confidence, because I won't have the fat to hide behind.

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?
I think it's that I live with my father. He's taller than me, a male, and is very active. I'm short, a female, and very inactive. So, when he eats four pieces of pizza, most of that energy is going to be used. When I match him (as I often do), most of that energy is going to be converted into fat. Also, being forced to "clean my plate" (because of starving kids in Africa) hasn't helped either--now I feel the need to make sure my plate is empty, whether I'm full or not.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?
I'm not a huge girl, so I doubt society cares. Watching TV and going out to the supermarket and stuff, I can see that I am rather average--and maybe even on the small side--for my country.

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?
I don't know; I'm probably too young to tell. I don't think so though--I think we're heading more toward "acceptance" than pressure, because weight problem is growing, and in a democratic country, majority rules. So, if more and more people get large, then it'll just get more and more accepted until we reach our climax, and weight starts going back down (which I'm sure WILL happen--it'll just take a couple generations).

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem? (Eating medicine or health products, working out, etc.)
Dieting. Specifically, eating less than I used to--not necessarily eating healthier foods. I'm also trying to work out, but that's not the method I'm using to lose weight. I'm mostly working out to improve my abilities, because I would like to do more physically challenging activities eventually, and I need the stamina to make those activities fun.

Q1. Do you believe you have weight problems?

Am I obese? Yes. But food is my problem, not fat.

Q2. Have you gotten comments on your weight?

Not so much, actually.

Q3. How have this problem affected your daily life?

I'm embarassed to go out and do the things "healthy" people do, so I'm alone a lot of the time.

Q4. Has it had negative influences on your life? Have you been discriminated because of your weight, etc.?

I think it's hurt my chances of getting the jobs I've wanted (I was more than qualified for the one job, but by chance a prettier less qualified person go it).
Other than that, there's not much else to discriminate about.

Q5. How do you believe you have gotten this problem, in what way have this occurred?

I continually ate to much and my stomach started demanding more and more food to satisfy it.

Q6. What do you believe the society expect from you, when it comes to your weight problem?

They want me to lose weight at their pace. (I want them to screw off NOW :sifone:)

Q7. Do you believe that the pressure is higher on people with weight problems today than for a few years ago?

Yeah. It's fashionable to be skinny, and I'm out of style.

Q8. Are you doing something to try to “get rid of” your weight problem?

I'm an addict to food, I'll never get rid of it. My wish is to control and manage it.
