Question on my training with my personel trainer.

Hi,

I have been training with a personel trainer for about 1.5 months (2 lessons per week), and I have a question about his method.

We work on various part of my body everytime on weight training, but the problem is that he seems to push me over my limit most of the time. Is it bad for your body or is it the way to gain muscles?

A trainer that's pushing you, i think you might have a good one.

What are your goals? What kind of excercises are you doing?

I agree with newf. A rainer pushing you is a good thing...however, make sure you communicate with yoru trainer as well. if they are pushing you beyond what your "perceived" limitation is and yuo feel uncomfortable or apt to get injured, you need to tell them that. However, most of new clients do not like to train outside of their "comfort zone"...so it is a little give and take.

Exactly... He is build a strong base for you. Soon, his "pushing" will feel normal and you may even push it past!

What StandApart is important. Communication will help them to understand where you are. Someone helping tends to push you beyond where you might push yourself. This is a good thing.

I once told my hapkido instructor that my stretch was getting into a painful area and he pushed on my shoulder forcing me deeper. This tore a tendon in my hammy and gave me a black bruise that I wore for a month. On top of that, it took me a YEAR to get back to where I was with my stretching and it halted my leg routines for four months!!! Communicate and expect him to listen.

That said, don't communicate about, "I don't feel like it." "This is tough." "Are you sure I should try this hard."

Instead, communicate when you really feel that you are pushing yourself (only you will know this) too far.

I think that by virtue of the fact that you are in here asking complete strangers whether he's doing any good is probably a good sign that he's not. Sessions are more than just "the workout"... You should be learning why you are doing what you're doing. A good trainer creates an environment that invites questions, and explains it all to you without making you feel silly for asking.

... my humble opinion anyway.

valid point.

The reason that I asked is that I worked on the chest and biceps with my trainer on last Saturday. He completely drained me on every set of bench presses and bicep curls (3 sets each). It had been almost 3 days since the workout and I can't even hold my arms straight due to the pain on my biceps. I feel something is pulling inside and I have to hold my arm at about 20 to 30 degree angle to avoid the pain.

that is normal if you are just starting out... Takes some time for your body to adjust and not hurt like that.

Perhaps you are using too much weight? My friend and I used to have a trainer I just wanted my body in better shape to become more toned but my friend is 22yrs old 228lbs 5'2 so he would work her out till she threw up. He said she'll lose weight faster this way- I thought he was a bit crazy thats dangerous we never went back to him, I'm still in shape, but my friend still weighs 228lbs. :( I know I'm not much help, I'm really new at all of this. Good luck on your training.

I am not new to weight training, but is the first time I have a trainer to work out with. I am 32 years old and I started lifting weight when I was 18. I was working out on and off for the past few years, and only started working out again regularly, about 4 to 5 times per week since late November last year. I am aware of the stiffness after working out for the first few times.....but the pain in my arms is just totally different.

I have done bicep routines that left me unable to straighten my arms for days. They felt like the pump remained down near the elbow also. And, it almost felt as if it was torn!

But, I let it heal a couple of days and went back to find that I had leaped past a plateau and was now curling more than ever before!

Sometimes my calves hurt so bad I force myself up or down stairs hanging on to the rail for my life!

I sort of like it...

I need a personal trainer like RIP. My "help mate" is less motivated than I am!

Ahh, I kinda miss that feeling. I used to have to turn my arms, knuckles downa and let gravity stretch em out... I drive a stick shift, talk about painful after a great leg workout...:D

How about in the shower immediately after chest and shoulders. You are trying to force your swollen arms up to shampoo your hair.

That is the best!

I am proping one arm up by place the other hand under my elbow and forcing it up with a cry of pain.

And, the day after a sick ab blasting, I go to get up when the alarm goes off (forgetting that my abs will be sore). I get about 1 inch off the pillow and flop back down with a whelp.

My wife is like, "What's wrong?"

I reply, "Ug... My abs are soooo sore."

She is like, "Suck it up pussy."

J/K about the last part, but that would be COo.oOL if she would say that. That would motivate me.
