Question for HIITers... please help!!

Wow, I just discovered this site recently and was so impressed by all you guys that I just had to register! Thanks for all the superb info (and unconditional support) that you all offer each other :D .

I'm hoping you might be able to help me out too. (This is my first post :) ) So here's the deal. I eat very healthily (well, I think I do at least... you never know these days, sheesh!) but have trouble incorporating exercise into my daily routine. I'd really like to start working out and am contemplating my different options. Could everyone who reads this who has been doing HIIT for a prolonged period inform me of your track record? I'm considering starting it up and would really appreciate a succinct log of how effective it is before I start any kind of plan.

I'm not trying to lose weight (I am 5"8' and weigh about 120 so I realize that no weigh needs to be lost!) I just want to be more toned since right now I am quite "loose".

So if it's not too much trouble, please post your HIIT workout and how often you do it. Any kind of progress or comments you have about how it makes you feel, or whatever would be welcome and greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

HIIT is really hard for the deconditioned. It's better to start off slowly and work your way up. My HIIT routine at the moment is sprint 100 yards, jog 100 yards and rest for 90 seconds then repeat this 6 times.

A good starting point is to sprint for 20 seconds and walk for 20 seconds and then repeat for around 20 minutes. HIIT helps build up ATP-PC system, which basically helps with lactic acid threshold, helps to regenerate ATP (that which gives us energy) faster, and due to EPOC (post-exercise oxygen consumption) which leads to greater fat loss due to a greater calorie expenditure.

HIIT is great for atheltes that are involved in intense sports and the individual looking to add some great anaerobic endurance.

Thanks for the post, evolution. Yeah, I'm getting the impression that HIIT is tough for newbies. I don't want to go overboard at the beginning; trust me, I've heard of way too many over-zealous individuals fizzle out after a week for that reason. Whatever pace is fine with me if it means that I'm building up stamina. Heheh, I'm not looking for instant results, just a long-term confidence boost :p . I'd like to start slow but am simply looking for suggestions on how to start and am exploring the possibility of getting into HIIT, eventually.

Thanks for your pointers!

Well before I did HIIT, I did alot of 6mph jogging for long periods of time (~40 minutes) for about a month or two. After that I was able to pull off:

2 Minutes Warmup

1 Minute Sprint
1 Minute Walk

Repeat ~ 16 times

2 Minutes Cooldown

i currently do HIIT on the stationary bike, plan on trying sprints next summer

after warming up i go all out for 15/30 seconds then go slow for equal amount of time and repeat. i can only do 7 minutes of work right now not counting warm up and cool down and believe me its more than enough. :)
