Question for Fellow Women

I don't know how to go about mentioning this other than coming out with it. So, I will do just that. If I'm too blunt, I apologize. It's a serious concern for me.

I crave foods when I menstruate...usually salty foods. Do any of you crave specific things at that time? If so, how do you handle it? I've noticed that sometimes, the salt craving becomes so overwhelming I give in no matter how hard I fight it. This is the first cycle I've had since I've been seriously dieting and exercising, and I feel so guilty about allowing myself the salt I had today (it came in the form of seasoned fries that were loaded with calories and fat). How do you handle cravings at that particular time?

I really appreciate any and all responses.

PS
If you'd rather not post publicly, please feel free to PM me. I still can't PM back, but I'll definitely be grateful for any responses/suggestions.

I crave chocolate and other sweet stuff before and during my period. Sometimes I'll give in and have just a tiny bit of whatever it is that I feel that I need, but I won't go crazy with it.

oh yea, chocolates a big one here too! I do give in a bit, but not endulge. I don't think calming down your craving is a big deal b/c I've heard that TOM speeds up your metabolism so you burn more cals.

:iagree: i also think its important to allow yourself to give in "slightly" to your cravings... especially if you turn around and binge later... its a preventive measure that will help you in the long run... a tablespoon of peanut butter vs. 3 overstuffed mouthfuls of peanut butter + a burrito + a chocolate fudge mini-cake

unfortunately that is from experience...

Allowing myself a little bit is probably what I should have done when I first started having the craving. Instead, I tried to ignore it for more than a day, and it all came crashing down on me with those fries.

I crave fried food like crazy. That's usually the week I'll carefully track calories one day and give in and have a cheeseburger, or an order of fries, or tenders from the local chicken place.

That's compared to before all the changes...I'd go on Monday and have a corndog and cheese tots, Tuesday it'd be fried mozzarella cheese sticks, Wednesday it'd be the cheeseburger and fries and so on 'til I'd gained five pounds or more.

Giving in to cravings sometimes isn't bad...like others have said it keeps you from a total binge later.

I get the worst cravings too, sometimes it's chocolate and then sometimes it is salty foods. I just feel like I have to fill up on food for some reason. I fought it for awhile but now I just let myself have whatever I am craving and find that since I've been watching what I eat I don't seem to have a problem binging. Like if I want chocolate I will eat a bar and then I am satisfied. I think especially that time of the month if you deny yourself then it only gets worse and you end up eating more then you need or wanted. My advice is just remember your portions and make yourself stick to it and when you do eat it do it nice and slow and enjoy every bite. I just heard someone say they break their chocolate into little tiny pieces so it seems like it goes farther.

I crave salty/crunchy really bad during TOM. I have found that nuts work well to curb it, also, All Bran crackers are good as they are pretty salty. You could try a good, kosher dill as well for your salt fix. Or just add a bit of table salt to what ever healthy fare you are currently enjoying - I LOVE salt on grapefruit. It's better than sugar.

God Bless,
mik
