Question about tomatoes...

What are plum tomatoes, and are they different than regular tomatoes? As you can tell, I don't eat them:eek: I have found several recipes that look good, that call for plum tomatoes. I see nothing at the grocery store with that name. Which isn't surprising, it's a tiny store! Can I use regular tomatoes instead, or will that change the flavor?

This is the main reason I hate living in this town. I can't even buy ground turkey, turkey sausage, etc. here. Hard to eat healthy, meat-wise.

I'm not sure of the flavor difference, but plum tomatoes I believe would be a similar size of a roma tomato. I would just use regular tomatoes if you don't have plums available.

Plum tomatoes, which are oblong rather than round and small... a bit smaller than a computer mouse bout about the same shape, I tend to find more in the winter, I'm not sure where they are imported from... but they seem more plentiful then... Plum tomatoes are often found in teh canned variety as well...

In recipes, you can substitute, plum tomatoes are a little less "juicey" so I'd probably seed the regular tomato first... just cut it in half and squeeze it over the garbage can...

Flavor wise, there's not a lot of difference in taste... except I love super fresh super ripe beefsteak tomatoes (it's the jersey girl in me) plum tomatoes don't come close to that flavor.

If you grow your own plum tomatoes, they also make for great sun dried tomatoes, just sliced in half and put in a very low oven...

Thanks! And while I'm thinking about it...what do cherry tomatoes taste like? I'd like to find a few more healthy things that I don't HATE, that I can force myself to eat. I don't like regular tomatoes raw, just cooked. Are the cherry ones better?

cherry tomatoes taste like smaller versions of big tomatoes - but I don't think they are as flavorful.. the fun behind those is the exposion in your mouth when you bite one (i'm kinda immature like that :)

Grape tomatoes are wonderful for snacking - those tomatoes are sweet, with a little crunch are are terrific..

well you need to move :D

bummer...

For ground turkey and stuff - if you have a supermarket... you might ask the butcher if they will grind up a turkey breast for you -- and you could also be super crafty and make your own sausage... (i've done it once or twice and it's really not that hard and doesn't use really strange ingredients... i've made chicken and garlic sausage that was incrediblly good :D

They actually might be willing to do turkey products for me if I ask; I'll go in tomorrow.

For my chili tonight, I used a small pkg of lean hamburger, and a small pkg of veggie burger. I added up all the calories...I came up with about 3325 calories for a crockpot FULL. Does that sound right? Now how many servings are in a crockpot?

Man, I'm full of questions today:D

that sounds REALLY high... looking at nutrition data.. which isn't very lean at all - has 76 calories an ounce... x 16 (which would be a pound) is about 1200 calories...

has 360 calories in the entire package...

I must have figured out the ground beef calories wrong:eek: I'm so bad at conversions, etc.

Thanks. That would put it at about 2800 calories, divided by about 12 (maybe more, as I dont' eat that much chili in a serving) makes it about 230 calories a bowl. That sounds better; the canned chili on the calorie counter site are between 270 and 350 a serving.
