question about soreness

Ok, so I completely overdid my quads the other day, so they've been sore the last couple of days, so I haven't worked them out (not lifting weights, but still doing cardio). My question is this, even though they are still slightly sore, should I go ahead and continue with my weight lifting routine on my quads, or should I wait until they are no longer sore? Thanks in advance for any help :)

My quads are usually (very) sore for half a week (well maybe not quite) after doing Bulgarian squats with a lot of weight, and I find that if I work out again (that is in 48 hours, as scheduled) it tends to stop the pain/soreness, or something of that nature.

But then again that's just me, and there's nothing in this world that could prevent me from working out, let alone soreness. Infact I'm slightly sick now, and I still benched the highest weight I could =/

Anyway, I would say you try it and see what happens, I've honestly never had problems with doing various legwork when my legs are already sore.

Sometimes you have to train when you are sore. So rock on.

Training gets rid of soreness.

Actually, doing a light workout the next day will reduce soreness a lot. If you are ever really sore, go to the gym and do a couple of light exercises, your soreness will be gone a lot sooner.

It's not infrequent on days that I'm sore and go to train that I have better than expected workouts (and it relieves the soreness too).

What if you're so sore that you have trouble doing the movement/exercise? Like your range of motion is restricted?

After core temp and heart rate have been raised or not? Once you are warmed up good it shoudl go away- But if it doesn't -

scientifically I do not know, but with my experience says that is a pretty good indicator to give that exercise a rest for a few days.

Biking and knees is my personal example, or pushups and shoulders,, or running and hips, or --- hahhahaha abotu anythign I overdo!

not dangeoraus to train through soreness, if you are REALLY sore, and it HURTS its probobly not a good idea, but then chanses are you overdid it in the first place. I think i saw some research once that if you train a muscle while its sore, it doesnt get more sore because of that training.

Karky's exactly right: and not only that, but there's good research indicating that soreness doesn't cause strength losses either, so training through soreness won't affect performance.

Having said that, DD, if the muscle is sore to the touch (excessive DOMS, as opposed to general muscle soreness), it's best to do some active recovery (foam rolling, light lifting/cardio, massage, contrast baths, etc, etc, etc) and allow for another day of recouperation before you lift again.

Thanks so much for all the great advice!! Like Starcraftmazter said there is very little that will stop me from working out...just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to damage my progress. Thanks again!

I find that training to failure and training through soreness tend to work well for some muscles/movements while training way short of failure and taking the extra rest seems to work better for other muscles/movements. For example quads, triceps and lats grow stronger most when I push them to failure and workout again before the soreness is gone, while biceps, pecs and calves are the opposite and respond best to stopping before failure and taking the extra rest day until the soreness is completely gone. So for me my quads are most always a little sore because i push them hard 3 times a week.
