Question about high protein diet...

I am trying to get myself started on a high protein low carb diet, but not the Atkins diet. What I want to know is, with this kind of diet, is it the case that if say I was to have a portion of chips (or fries as some of you may call them - I'm from England, fries are called chips over here), would this mean that I've ruined my diet? Because I read the Atkins book and I think I remember it saying that for the first 2 weeks, you couldn't afford any slip ups. So, essentially, if I have a portion of chips/fries, I would probably have to start again from scratch. Is this the case with high protein diets or are you allowed to have the odd carbohydrate treat?

Also, I would be grateful if anyone could list some "good carbs" for me. I'm not sure what they are.

Treating yourself once in awhile isn't going to be that big of a deal but if your just starting out why have fries? i'd try and avoid it and just concentrate on the lower fat and protein...good carbs like brown rice, whole wheat pastas and whole wheat bread, fruits and veggies...avoild the white flour and sweets. I'm all for a treat but maybe see how you progress. Just a thought. Good luck. :)

A high protein/low carb diet is Atkins... in the sense that it goes through the same process to produce the same results. So just call it Atkins and admit to it.

Then again, you could decide to just eat healthy and clean and scrap the fad diet. Eat lots more fruits and veggies, complex carbs, and drink more water and fresh juices. I'm sure they have these things in England. It can't be rows and rows of fish and chips at the grocers, can it? ;)

Neglecting the carbs will only make you really tired and feel run down. Eventually, you'll just feel drained from that type of diet, and you'll end the diet and binge like crazy, and the pounds (or kilos) will pack back on.

While you're at it, you'll need to pick up your physical activity. The last thing people ever want to do when they're wanting to lose fat is exercise! That's what all these fad diets are all about. Skip the fad diet and work on increasing your physical activity. Incorporate more fitness into your daily routine and pick up a sport you enjoy and can stick with. And then, refine your diet so that you're eating a lot better than fish and chips.

As far as carbs, you want the good carbs that are high in complex carbs. This stuff will cut out white wheat or "enriched" wheat and put you on the track for eating wheat carbs instead. Cut back on foods higher in sugar too. If you do that, it should be enough to get your bodyfat back under your control.

Good luck to you!

High Protein and Low Carbs has been around before Dr.Atkins was born. It is the secret of any bodybuilder who cuts up before a show. So lets not give Atkins any credit other than marketing nutrition information. Everything else Dross said is right on the mark. I would just like to add that you also want to reduce the amout of fat you consume as well (which is why fries/chips are out). Fried chicken is also bad in this way but you can eat it grilled.
