Question about eating before/after a workout

Hey everyone!

I just finished a phenomenal Zumba workout and made it through! However, it felt as though I JUST made it.

I would like to know what you all recommend eating before/after a workout, and when it is best to eat it. I also have a tendency to have low blood sugar, so whatever it is, it needs to be able to help me keep going without puking all over the floor.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks! <3

If you are going to eat before the workout it is better to do it 40 minutes before, to give time for your stomach to empty. Eating after the workout can be done right afterwards and the meal should be rich in protein (this is the time when bodybuilders drink their protein shakes).

Whether it is best to eat before a workout or not is still quite controversial so you should try both and see what works for you. As for after the workout almost everyone agrees it is a good idea, drink lots of fluids and have a nice meal or shake. A note on protein - it requires a lot of water to process and since you just worked out it is likely that your body is slightly dehydrated, so make sure to replenish fluids.

If you work out at the same time everyday it is easy to get on a schedule. From experience I like to eat something an hour or a little more before working out so that I have the carbs and energy to get a great workout. In the past I have gone 4 or more hours without eating before a workout and I feel tired and wear down quicker during the workout.

What works for me may be different then you but I typically eat a 300 calorie meal an hour or two before working out and another 300 calorie meal an hour or two after working out. The first meal gives me the energy I need to get a great workout while the second meal helps me recover from all of the lost nutrients my body needs.

Thanks!
You say I should try to not eat before a workout, but for me that is not possible. As I said in my original thread, I get pretty light headed and shaky if I don't eat. I have passed out from lack of nutrition when jogging before, so it's obvious I need to eat something.

If eating 40 minutes before a workout doesn't work for you, then you can get an energy drink before the workout, or just mix some sugar in water. Anything liquid will go through your stomach easier. Eat as lightly as possible before working out - if you just had a banquet before working out and you don't puke it all out you are not working out hard enough, but if it was a light snack or just a drink you should be fine.

Try it out and tell us how it worked out :)
